Get rid of that hydraulic cooling fan and go electric. Used a fan from a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 5.9L. This Efan was only offered that one year with the 5.9L. Used a Flex-a-lite fan control and optional manual on and off switch. Using a 10ohm 100-watt wire wound resistor (to replace the solenoid) to keep the ECM/PCM happy, no engine service lite. I know the Efan I used is very rare but there are other fans that could be used like the Ford Taurus 3.8L, Lincoln Mark VIII, Mercury Villager, and some Volvo models.

Another great job martin! You allways find that ingenious way of douing things...me...on the other hand...got tired of looking at my old hydraulic fan and it went to the trash..( with that stupid solenoid attached)...so..for weeks i had no choice but to buy a solenoid from ebay with the hardness for $140...until today after seeng your video...yep...you just save me that much...just bougth two of those resistors for $5.00...well...let me tell you that 12 blade fan from ford and clutch are douing their job ok...had to buy a new shroud that cover the fan and it came with an electric fan that will be rigged just like yours...and the three rows alluminum radiator from ebay its douing a great job...just a little wider than the original and it takes some adjustment...i used the same power steering pump by having the hose made...so far so good...cheers!

Not real familiar with the Chrysler setup, but most import cars set the fan temps at about 10 - 15 degrees above thermostat temp. The stat will keep the engine at 180 degrees even when you are on the highway on a cold day. Setting the fan at that temperature will make it run constantly (and unnecessarily) because the thermostat keeps the water at 180 - even if you have tons of cooling coming in from driving etc. Again just a thought :) Thanks for the content!

Nice. Thanks for this video. Love how clean your engine bay is. I bought an 04 with the 4.7L almost 3 weeks ago now. I have a crack in the radiator on the driver's side. The hydraulic fan has wetness in the center of the fan. The 5.9L Grands are rare here, but I did see that Flex-a-lite has a fan for our models. Really thinking about getting that for when I change out the radiator. Can't wait to get this done and hopefully I can figure out what's going on with my oil consumption. Hopefully when I take off the valve covers I can see what might be going on there along with the PCV valve mod you show on your other video. Thanks again.

@@JM-id8ft I did not get the flex a lite. After getting the radiator out and being up underneath, I found where a massive oil leak was happening which I thought was the rear main seal. Where it was parked, I didn't have the capacity to drop the trans. So I ended up replacing the radiator and putting back the power steering lines. Haven't had any issues since and it's been 7 months. But if I ever have radiator issues again, I want to change it to electric.

Thank you, it's kind of unlikely that it will kick into full unless it really heats up. You can check the fan's operation by unplugging the temp sensor between the alternator and the AC compressor, the fan should kick into high . If it does it is operating correctly. I'm just not a fan of that hydraulic fan. No pun intended

Martinbuilt , I've just done a road trip from Ravensthorpe to Karratha in Western Australia - 2,092kms in 2 days , outside air temp went from 8c to 36c , summer is coming so 45c+ soon Before I set off I did your solenoid mod (half turn in) this saved the motor from cooking After I crossed the 26th parallel I had to turn off the aircon open the windows and put the heater fan on to keep the motor cool It's the only Jeep in town , every other 4x4 is a Toyota Land Cruiser 79 series 4.5 V8 twin turbo diesel , but the base price is $80,000 AUD I paid $250 AUD for my WG in Jan The fuel consumption rose with the solenoid mod from 8 litres per 100kms to 10.5 , but that's cheaper than a new motor

Excellent work that I will eventually follow for my WJ, but I want to comment on the efan controller install. I am using that exact same controller and water coolant temp sensor in my XJ to run the aux efan. First comment is that I am surprised you put the controller in a spot where it can be subjected to the elements. The electronics are potted and you sealed the connections to the high power wiring, but corrosion on the control terminals will eventually cause functionality issues. The other comment is temperature sensor placement. When the thermostat is closed, there will be minimal coolant flow through the radiator causing a fair time lag for when the sensor feels a change in temperature. This is less of an issue when the min coolant temp set point is significantly above the thermostat opening point, but if trying to set the efan to control right at the thermostat opening temperature, this is a challenging location to use. The preferred location in this case is in coolant line running to the heater core. This hose sees a more constant flow of coolant coming off the motor, and is better suited for controlling the efan when running very close to the thermostat opening temperature.

This is very interesting to me, I must be one of those few people who likes the hydro fan and how it works. What would be the main reason for doing this conversion? Enless it broke or failed. I’d say that at full speed the hydro fan can still move more air than the 5.9 fan (I have a 5.9 limited). Yea the hydro fan can act a little lethargic in stock form, it seems to give the bare minimum air requirement but in spite of that it’s never let my Jeep overheat in the most severe conditions. You cleverly showed how to turn up the solenoid too in the last video if you want to wake the fan up a bit and make it run cooler.
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 5 жыл бұрын
Even with the mod that I did to the solenoid, I would see temps at 215* plus and for me, that is to hi. I am trying to achieve the best performance not necessarily the best MPG. The engine will get it's best MPG at 204* that is what the PCM is trying to maintain but not doing a very good job at it.

Hi Martin, new question. The adapter you drilled from 1/8 to 1/4 npt, it has a small screw to ground it. I ordered the same adapter from Amazon. I notice when you checked it with your heat gun it didn't have the second wire coming from the ground point. Is it needed or not? I installed mine, and grounded it also, but didn't work. I'm thinking the sensor is bad because many other people left reviews saying the sensor didn't work for them, so I going today to the autoparts to find a "working" sensor. Thank you.

@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 5 жыл бұрын
Flex-a-lite recommends installing it on the hot side most likely because the controllers lowest setting is 160 degrees this could be a little too hot if you installed it on the cool side. I'm seeing a 50 + degree difference between the hot side and the cool side hose with this electric fan. I can literally grab a hold of the lower radiator hose and it is just warm to the touch.

I'm an interest out of germany, so excuse me for some grammar failures. 1. how does the fan controller recognize the needs of the fan for A/C? If i'm on high speed, the fan shouldn't run, even if the A/C is switched on. 2. Did you recognized a change on your MPG? So with solenoid mod in a bad way, with electric with the same amount in a good way? 3. Does the sound of your car changes, because of the missing idle fan run of the hydraulic version? 4. i didn't see the opening vents (high speed) of the fan shroud you mentioned in the comments earlier, do you have a example search tag for it that i can find a picture of it? Thank you! Your videos are very detailed, i like that a lot.

Hello Johannes, My dad was from Germany and my mom from Austria they met in the states. I haven't been to Germany since I was 12. 1. The fan control gets a negative or positive signal from terminals #7 and 8. 2. The solenoid mod is only bad if you turn it one whole turn. Good if at half a turn. Did not see any real difference in MPG with the electric fan. 3. Not sure what you're trying to say. I can not hear the electric fan from inside the Jeep. From outside of the Jeep I can hear the Electric fan more then I could hear the hydraulic. 4. Are you referring to the flaps of rubber on the fan shroud that open at cruising speed? There are 5 of them, 3 on the left and 2 on the right side. You can also message me at Facebook facebook.com/Martinbuilt-2351766611763181

This is an educational video for sure, and it addresses what appears to be a widely experienced cooling system problem with Jeep WJ models. My 2004 WJ Overland was already converted to an electric fan of unknown origin before I purchased it, and when I recently bought a 2004 Laredo, overheating problems that started right away have forced me to have this same conversion done by a local shade tree mechanic out here in the sticks of the Third World. For the Laredo, a Mercedes electric fan from an unknown model is inbound at this very moment from the junkyard, where the "consultants" would only confirm that the donor vehicle bore a 4-Matic emblem, which narrows it down to maybe twenty Mercedes models haha. Anyway, I'll watch the rest of this clip now, to note down any pointers that I can mention to the surgeons I engaged for a princely sum equivalent to $20 USD. What could possibly go wrong?

Hey man, as always, very high quality work and detail. Enjoy watching your videos and learn something along the way. In this rare case, I just have to ask though, why? In my opinion I felt like you made a downgrade with this one. Added complexity of wiring, controllers, relays, more things to fail, etc. The hydraulic fan is pretty darn reliable with the caveat of regular fluid changes with the correct fluid that meets MS5931 spec. Just want to know your thoughts, which I may have missed. I do like the AN fitting on the bleed port. About to tackle the radiator replacement myself. Have you had any issues with the plastic thermostat housings, mine started leaking randomly. Cheers!

I think it's one of the best mods I've ever done to this Jeep. It finally stay well below 200 degrees even today it was 111 degrees in Las Vegas and it never got hotter than 194. The hydraulic fan could never do that even with the solenoid modification that I had done in a previous video. I haven't ever had any issues with the thermostat housing so far so good.

@@martinbuilt thanks for the reply. Interesting results with the electric fan. Makes it all worth it right there. Must be why the alternator was struggling to keep up, fan is drawing some amps to pull all that air. Was the overdrive alternator pulley enough to compensate for the underdrive crank pulley? Do you have any spare, modified solenoids? I'd like to try one. Coolant for me typically stays around 205-210 and oil will creep to 210-215. Over here in Virginia Beach we have hot and humid. But, would be nice to pull those coolant temps below 200. I wanted to try an all aluminum radiator but not sure how they fit, mixed reviews.
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I do have a modified solenoid. The 205 to 210 sounds pretty much typical since the ECM is trying to keep the engine at 204 that is where the engine achieves its best gas mileage. I don't have much confidence in the aluminum radiators especially if you're referring to the ones I see on eBay looks like the same cheap Champion radiators I had put in my XJ I've gone through three of them in just a few years. The stock alternator was doing fine only at idle was the problem and yes the overdrive pulley brought it back up to tolerable voltage at around 12.7 12.8 at idle

Is that indicating that you are installing jumpers from 3B to 2B/4B? Or is that just indication of the switching mechanism? Also, did you tie 3B(12V switchable source) in with terminal 9 on the fan controller? Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything. Thank you in advance!

So if I'm not mistaken, you could forego installing the manual switch, correct? Without that, the rest of your setup would just function automatically via signals as determined by coolant temp sensor? I can kinda understand why one may want the switch, but not only do I not have a 4x4 model nor any rough terrain to negotiate (I'm in Dallas lol), I also would only be using my GC for normal daily driving.

Hello Martin I have finally decided to do a E Fan conversion. What is your thoughts about using the 99-00 4.0 Electric Fan and Shroud, I heard it bolts right up. Would I still be able to use the variable fan speed controller you used and have 60% speed first and then 100% speed when temperature rises? Or is the 99-00 fan only 1 speed (HIGH). I wish I could use the same set up as you if you made a kit with those custom Aluminum Mounts to mount the 5.9 Fan and Shroud I would definitely buy that!

I just think they should turn higher RPM to help keep the engine cool. They are very expensive to replace, over $1200. I love the performance from this E-fan. Martin, just did my conversion. Used Flex-A-Lite fan and made Al shroud myself. This works great, T is solid and no random slight overheating anymore. Should have done it long long time ago. I tuned turn-on point where it is on and off during city driving depending on conditions. But it is always on during Hway, is yours similar? One other thing I have noticed, when I am hitting the HWay cold, Fan is turning on even before I can see T needle reaching operation range on my gage ... This is strange, I am not sure if t-stat is even open, why is flex-a-lite sensor reading increased T and turning on in advance? Is hot coolant heating top tube first? Would be good to be able to read T from that sensor directly. Did you see similar thing on yours?
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 2 жыл бұрын
The coolant flows from the engine through the top radiator hose to the radiator. No mine doesn't not necessarily run going down the highway. I actually think that the flexalite does not turn nearly as fast or pull the same CFM as the OEM fans do and as a result are slowing the air down as it passes through the radiator at highway speeds. Try turning the fan off at highway speeds and see if the engine temperature actually decreases.

@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt Жыл бұрын
That electric fan is an auxiliary to the electric fan. I don't believe it would ever have the power to actually cool the engine by itself. You must replace the steering pump because the one that's in there has too much power and will damage the seals on the steering gear box. Also The high pressure steering line is larger fitting diameter and can not be used.

I bought the OEM replacement style electric fan that goes in front of the nightmare hydraulic system, and want to mount it to stock shroud. My mechanic chopped all mounting brackets, so I have no reference as to where it goes, so I can make brackets, but dont want it to be too close or too far. Thank you.
