I related a lot to Steven this season. I helped raise my siblings, went to war, and was lost when all was said and done. I felt if I wasn't useful to anyone, I was a waste of life. From the beginning of the season, I recognized what he was going through. The desire for a semblance of normality with others you love, without endless shame. The sadness circlejerk at the end was peak awful, though. I didn't enjoy the message left for anyone like him.

So you’re saying you related to the series, the way Steven felt from the beginning till the end, but you’re saying you didn’t like the ending right? I think the show did an amazing job at closing Steven Universe’s universe. Steven Universe Future was my favorite season, more than the first five Steven Universe, even though the beginning felt like filler I’m pretty sure that for someone who has gone through a similar experience would understand the need for those moments in the beginning. I honestly liked the ending, don’t get me wrong, saying a hug fixes everything is wrong, but they didn’t try to say that, the hug was just a representation of their love for him, he felt like they didn’t need him anymore, and he felt that if he was useless then he had no purpose, and he thought of himself as a monster for not being able to cope with his trauma, but when they hugged, it screamed at him saying, “we love you unconditionally” that didn’t fix anything though, afterwards he started going to therapy, and went to go find himself. Even though I liked the ending, I still believe though that we have our own right to like or dislike the series, but we gotta remember that it’s not about us, this is what Rebecca Sugar wanted, and it’s her show, so we should be thankful and not criticize her.

I don't know man, alot of the problems you see in this aren't really problems, they're really just irks I guess. For example, steven growing a beard is kind of directly tied to his he feels mentally. In one episode back, his body changed because of how he felt how old he was. He felt he was growing during his training with jasper, that's most likely why he started to look older. And him "shaving" is due to him reverting back to his younger self because he's shouldering yet again, alot of guilt. I just rewatched the entire show, it's pretty easy to catch on to alot of things when you remember it like the back of your hand.

Yeah! And the “he randomly projected his dream on the TV!? Random new power bad” like its the combination of 2 different concepts! 1) gems can alter TV signals, we see that with lapis in S1 and peridot in S2. We even see a similarity in the diamond fight/garnets wedding where steven like projected into the gem state or wtvr and said “we’re family” 2)Stevens mental state affects his powers. From when he felt old and he became old, when greg lied about his leg healing and steven was no longer confident and then couldn’t heal for a time. So when you combine those, it means bad feelings get projected onto the tv! Hell even in the og show pearl projected her dreams into a hologram! It takes remembering the bare minimum of the show to understand that lmao

The best use of filler episodes ever. It's so cool that the theme of this is that Steven is meant to save everyone, and then realizes that the happily ever after never really came. He repressed all of this build up of trauma and saving he alone had to do for everyone around him just because he was unlucky enough to have his mothers gem. She wasn't bad either, it's just frustrating that he has to deal with what she started, and had to be there in it's core from start to finish instead of being a human kid who enjoyed life..hence why he goes to college at the end.

@@PlanetZoidstar simply putting my opinion, I disagree. He’s sacrificed himself for Connie and her response was to make him feel bad and steal Lion. He needed help, she didn’t, and whenever she got upset, he felt bad. She was pretty awful to him, actually. Maybe I’m biased, but he shouldn’t apologize for not being mentally okay when he’s been through so much trauma AND he had to fix other people’s problems 24/7 from a young age. I don’t think I should apologize when I have breakdowns, so he shouldn’t either.

@@PlanetZoidstar thing is, he didn’t treat anyone horribly. He needed support, he was confused, he didn’t understand that he probably just needed the extra care, and tried to push people away so they didn’t help him. He was in a really bad state of confusion and stress, so I believe he was not wrong for ‘being toxic’ And honestly, more often than not, I see any human emotions that people don’t want to deal with whether they’re anger, sadness, grief, depression, anxious, or any other ‘negative’ emotions or behaviors mislabeled as toxic. If someone’s angry, and someone else doesn’t agree with why they’re angry, they’re toxic. If someone needs any emotional accommodations, toxic. Idk, it’s not a fair label. I know the difference between abuse and not being nice to someone, and that’s on having gone through mental abuse, physical abuse, and other stuff. That’s just my opinion based on my experiences.

@@dreamt0wn739 Thing is, Steven did mistreat Connie in Future. He tried to pressure her into marrying him out of the blue, and when he didn't get the answer he felt entitled to he threw a pity party and Garnet had to comfort him. That's toxic entitled behaviour to expect the person you care about will just say "yes" and then having a hissy fit when they say "no". Then when she shows up and is clearly worried that he's having a meltdown, he screams in her face for her to leave. I've had emotional breakdowns before but I never let that make me scream in the faces of the people I care about and care about me. The fact Steven never apologises for that is especially toxic and it's never brought up again. It's okay to be angry, but it's not okay to take that anger out on other people. You are allowed to have moments of weakness, vulnerability and stress, but the moment you start taking it out on the people around you, you're the problem. It doesn't help that this all started when Steven tried to pressure Connie into marrying him and her turning him down is part of why he breaks down later at the hospital. I am sorry that you've had to deal with similarly stressful and anxious times before, but it seems you're just trying to justify that it's okay to use that as an excuse to hurt people. That you are not ultimately responsible for how you process your problems or who you lash out at because of them. You take issue with Connie feeling betrayed and leaving, but when it's Steven who is feeling hurt, suddenly he's innocent in all of this. Connie never meant to hurt Steven by rejecting his proposal, she was 14 and clearly far too young for such a commitment. Depending on where Beach City is, Steven was likely too young, and you need parental consent regardless. It was a dumb idea born from his selfish entitlement and fear of her going away, he wanted to shackle himself to Connie at all times and take away her right to privacy. That is what makes his meltdown later toxic.

@@Ajepeajlwwjdmaoweeow I don’t think those villains were supposed to be more than a grass blade. SUF just isn’t told in the typical hero vs villain epic story. It’s rather a more realistic slice of life, which emulates how the beginning of the series was like. We already had our great story in the original series, and Rebecca Sugar said herself that they told the story that they wanted to tell. SUF isn’t a SU season 6, it’s a slice of life spin off that shows a different side to the world of SU.

Ok first of all, Greg's reaction to Steven by saying "I'm proud of you" is surprisingly in character for him, which is exactly why Steven starts to have static in his ears and muting Greg out because that exact attitude is what he blames Greg for. So I found it hauntingly perfect the way it played out because Steven already started to blame Greg, but this just adds fuel to the already burning fire. Also Spinel changing is kinda validated due to her being exposed to the Diamonds who provided her with superficial benefits such as makeovers (Yellow), substances, I mean literal dopamine drugs (Blue) and letting it out on someone else (White)

Still doesnt matter, spinel if anything should grow to be smart, and not idiotic when it comes to others feelings, ESPECIALLY when Steven mirrors the desperateness that spinel has expressed. She has absolutely no right to do Steven like that, she became a hypocrite and absolutely oblivious towards steven. She means well of course but I don't think spinel should've "sang" to him, she should've actually helped him by giving her own personalized advice, or at least SYMPATHY.

@@emilyjones6875 if you use that logic and apply it to SU:F (which is a year probably from the movie) then her reverting to her old self is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE. taken your logic being that gems take much longer to mature and to grow and spinel growing with diamonds (who are absolutely not similar to pink in any possible way, being immature and bratty when she was still with pink) she should've matured at least a TINY bit from her interactions with the diamonds, and still be going through abandonment issues and not being ignorant to the problems steven is facing. If you take it as a human level of growth then it might be possible with the powers (for example: blue diamonds clouds) to account. But even that, empathy is never shown in spinel at all, and she shouldn't be oblivious since steven specifically asked how she moved on. Stevens change song might be motivation, but she needs a hella wake up call when it comes to personal space and look around the room when it specifically comes to abandonment and how she treats others. Her treating steven with kisses and hugs while comedic would be unrealistic.

As someone who seriously relates to Spinel’s struggles and views and such, the ending of the movie was so wonderful. It made me feel like it’s ok that I’m not always stable, and that even if I’m not perfect I’m deserving of love. Spinel’s appearance in Steven Universe Future was like a slap to the face. It was so invalidating because all her development at the end of the movie was just *thrown away.*
@ryancarson6962
@ryancarson6962 4 жыл бұрын
Eris Cook How was her development “thrown away”? She was only acting the way she did in the movie because she was basically lashing out at whatever she could, and by the end of the movie she basically gotten what she actually wanted, which was affection and loyal companionship, since the Diamonds basically adopt her. So why *WOULDN’T* she act the way she does in Future? She never actually hated being the friendly goofball she was before, in fact she has hinted numerous times throughout the movie that she hated the way she was acting, so it was clear that what she wanted in the end was to have fun with others again instead of being a broken lunatic that wants to destroy everything. Which is a desire that’s *fulfilled now.* Unlike Pink, the Diamonds show no signs of wanting to discard her so she has what she wants. And while she triggered Steven that’s not because she’s “stupid” or out of character. He asked her how she stopped being vengeful and she responds by singing back his advice about making a change, basically communicating that his advice helped her, which annoyed him but she didn’t realize that because she lacks social skills and grace in that area, something the movie had shown repeatedly to have issues with, I mean she literally invaded Steven’s personal space and was shown to be rather clingy. And what happened wasn’t even her fault, he’s not in a good place right now and by this point all of the Diamonds have unintentionally triggered him in some way, but Steven isn’t really communicating what he is going through so obviously they aren’t going to magically understand what he needs right now. They don’t know how to handle this situation. And it’s likely that she did learn from what happened with Pink and isn’t as gullible as she was before, but there’s obviously not much ways to show that since, again, she has companions who enjoy her company now and won’t discard her on a whim. Her development wasn’t thrown away, you just didn’t understand her character.

Ryan Carson Spinel is heavily BPD coded, and clearly severely traumatized. I know from experience those things aren’t something you can just get over in a couple months or even a couple of years. No matter what desire has been fulfilled, the trauma and disorder are still there. It’s honestly kind of insulting that it’s played off as Spinel just being a clingy and toxic person who magically gets better the moment she get love. The abandonment issues never leave. The anger never leaves. The constant need to push others away before they hurt you never leaves. People with *severe* mental illnesses like BPD, or even trauma can’t always control the way they act, and they certainly can’t control the way they feel. Serious therapy is needed. The reason a lot of people relate to her is because of that. She didn’t instantly get better at the end of the movie just like I will never fully recover. It hurt to have that stripped away.

You don’t know what kind of hell it is to deal with.

+Tiktoktree-It's pretty clear the writers don't like Jasper very much and probably only brought her back because the fans were begging for it. And honestly, I didn't want Jasper to get the FRIENDSHIP treatment but how she was handled wasn't that stellar either. She's still angry all the time, and they don't really do anything with that. You get the implication that she's lost, confused, doesn't know what to do anymore now that she knows that Pink Diamond is Rose. Her creator, her "mother" is her greatest enemy and caused her greatest suffering. All the pain she ever suffered through. And with The Diamonds dismantling the Empire, Jasper is no longer required to be the "perfect Quartz" solider either. So what can she do? Who can she be now? And the show doesn't really do anything with that. At all. Steven's way of approaching her and trying to help her is to. .. feed into her nasty temper. . .Okay. . .Why? Steven taking lessons from Jasper has potential but they never do anything with it. And she makes him so mad that he straight up kills her. . .And when he magically revives her back to life, she develops Stockholms and swears absolute loyalty to "her Diamond." And that's the last you see of her until the last episode. It's IMPLIED she got better, off screen, because she's at Little Homeworld now. When at the beginning of the season, she refused to live among the other Gems and wanted to be by herself. And when Steven tells her he's leaving, she gets so upset that she knocks a hole in the wall. So she will miss him. But given that the last time Steven saw her, he straight up killed her, you can't see anything but a disturbing Stockholms where she wants to please Steven and do whatever he wants. Steven was the one who asked her to come join Little Homeworld. And there's no indication she came there for any reason other than because it's what Steven wanted. She swears undying fealty to him and telling her that he's leaving is only going to upend and traumatize her even more. And she's proven to be so violent, unstable, and unable to live with others that there's no indication she's not a constant danger to all the Gems around her. He just leaves and expects the Crystal Gems to pick up the mess.

He says there isn't an overarching plot but there actually is in most episodes: In the second one he tries to help everyone but fails, which causes him to think he is losing his ability to resolve everything and makes him rethink his purpose The roller rink portrays his inability to make real human friends and makes him realise that he isn't like a normal human at all and can't relate to them, cutting off a part of himself Cactus Steven shows him losing his friends and having a fear of losing new ones, so he starts planting but makes a living plant which he confines that he is losing faith in the people but it says it to those people and forces him to face his trauma Overall there is an actual overarching plot but instead of making it blatantly obvious there is one, it makes it way more subtle, each episode sneakily slipping in signs of different trauma and PTSD, and it also uses things that he learnt in his childhood to emphasize this. He rarely ever used to help himself and only helped others, that being his goal throughout all his time, but when there is no one to help he has no goal, and starts to feel empty, and the show shows that in different ways as he realizes he can't help people and starts to have his childhood trauma start making this sense of despair much worse, and this starts slowly effecting his mental and ( I think that the body swelling and stuff is actually representing when you are having a negative impact on your body) physical health, and no one around him helps, and some make it worse, which leads to him feeling alone and like he can't confinde in anyone which makes him feel even more depressed. And this is really shown as he begins to lose faith in the people around him and he begins to isolate himself, Cactus Steven emphasizes his fear of confindeing which is honestly just sad as he keeps all this stress and loneliness bottled up. Gosh, sorry I made this into an essay without even going into the ending episodes and saying about them, it was supposed to be short but I got carried away :-)

The plot of the show is to clearly be a more adult and serious look on the effects of trauma and the ways that it hides in your mind and body. Steven's growths are a subconscious aspect of his trauma showing through his body. The show is attempting to use character, and character design in order to show the dangers of trauma and what it can do to a person if left unchecked. Steven shattering Jasper is something that is fixable because it demonstrates the idea that people with trauma will mask their negative behavior, whether that's self-destructive or harmful to others, with righting their wrongs as they make them before anyone can see the true damage they're doing to themselves or others. If there is an aspect of this series you don't understand as to why the creators did what they did, the most likely reason is to show character. Why does Steven think that proposing to Connie? Because he's insecure about who he is, so he relies on someone else to do the heavy lifting. This is a pretty common tactic among people in general, not just those with ptsd or mental illnesses. The way Connie's mother talks about trauma is one of the most accurate and realistic portraits I have seen. And there is probably better, but when she talks about how Steven's body is reacting to minor circumstances as if it's the end of thr world - I personally really connected with that. I saw myself in that phrasing. It's brilliant they were able to take such an extreme topic and display it in a way that makes it for anyone of any age an easy time to understand.

Honestly I loved it because that's reality you dont always get your high-school sweetheart and they break your heart and sometimes you don't figure yourself out and live in a van your whole life like Steven's dead beat father who was clearly broken to losing his love to basically child birth, but you know what? Everyone did love him and sometimes family, friends and lovers are the cause of your ptsd and that takes time and growing and forgiveness to do. I would love to see them make another season where he travels and finds himself and explores out on his own path.
@autinjones7194
@autinjones7194 8 ай бұрын
OK I agree with you mostly. But Greg is far from a deadbeat. Why do you think he lives in a van most of the series? quite literally most of the money he makes from his car washing job pays for Steven's house and bills. And courts aren't forcing him to do that he does so because he wants to. The reason why he does not live with Steven is because he's partially afraid of him and partially afraid of the crystal gems. Plus he had lived by a parenting philosophy of not wanting To be in your kids face all the time. That being said he lives just down the street from Steven and they hang out all the time. In fact Greg is probably Stevens closest human friend. Sorry to go off on a tangent but after all the Peter Griffin's and Homer Simpson's Stan Smiths and Hank Hills, Greg is so refreshing as one of the only cartoon dads I've ever seen that is actually a good father even if he doesn't have his life together.

This is coming from someone who is still mentally healing from a bad time in my life after years. Overall future had its up and downs. I think Steven's actual breakdown was pretty realistic. Agreed 100% about this. So many people are seeing this as black and white, like SUF is either a perfect or awful representation of trauma. It’s neither. It has its strengths and its weaknesses, some of which were beyond its control (scheduling and budget cuts). I like how they tried to wrap up all the storylines we didn’t have closure to, even if they did so poorly. I like how they tried to show the effects of trauma in a realistic way through a variety of characters, even if they sometimes failed pathetically there were good moments too. The fact that they tried is what matters most to me, because even though I think SUF was mostly boring and unnecessary, representing PTSD in a kid’s show (and outright stating that’s what they were doing) in a way that isn’t completely inaccurate paves the way for better, more consistent representations in the future. I feel like it’s similar with queer representation in SU. The stuff we get is shitty or boring sometimes, and absolutely heart wrenching others. The point is that they dared to try.

One of my biggest problems with this show was how they treated Greg’s backstory. Remember how his cousin Andy acted when we first met him? Judgemental, prejudiced, and hateful towards change. Now imagine what Greg’s parents and older relatives must have been like. Greg’s parents seem like the kind of folk to raise their kid as an ornament and not care very much for their wants and their aspirations. Also note that Greg sent them plenty of letters, but _none of them_ were even opened. Greg said that he had to hide all of his stuff as a kid. You shouldn’t _have_ to hide anything from your parents, especially something like your interests and passions. Not only that, but Greg also got used to entering and exiting the house via his bedroom window, probably in order to avoid his parents. Now I know that he wasn’t a paramount parent, living in a van and raising a half-alien kid all on his own (until the gems came into the picture) but I wouldn’t call him negligent. He even offered at one point to send Steven to school with his newfound money, but Steven said he was with the gems all the time. And I can easily understand the complications with doctor’s visits. But dammit, I will defend Greg Universe with my life. While Steven had a much less than typical childhood, I wouldn’t blame his father for his trauma. But instead of giving us a simple filler episode with insight as to what it was like for Greg growing up and the reason why he left in the first place, they just made it another thing for Steven to stress and have an outburst over.

Honestly, Jasper just should have stayed dead. I love her. She's really cool and I like her as an antagonist. But she should've just been shattered FOREVER. The show has explained that once a gem is shattered, they cannot be brought back.(except for when they are forced to fuse.) It would have been much more impactful if Jasper was just gone. As heartbreaking as it may be to see Jasper shattered, you gotta admit, it would've been better if they just killed her off. Also what they did to Spinel was just.. Not okay. +Dragon empress-Greg for a long time was one of the few characters this show didn't ruin. He was a good dad, and a wonderful human being .. .Until Future came along. . .Where it's established that his parents are still alive and he never introduced Steven to Steven's own grandparents because. . .reasons. . .Greg always had family he could count on when things got bad. So that means that Greg bummed it with Steven for years, didn't give Steven a stable, proper home over his head until the Crystal Gems took the major custody, where Greg was probably raising Steven in his van or at the car wash; led his son to believe his biological grandparents were dead, never told Steven about even relatives like Andy, because Greg is a selfish prick. He claims he never told Steven about the DeMayo part of his family because he was "trying to give Steven the life he never had", the life Greg's parents never granted him. . .by. . .letting Steven believe his grandparents are dead or don't want to be in his life. When his grandparents probably don't even know Steven exists, or that Greg had a lover that he conceived a kid with. Just. . .what the actual fuck? I suppose it was only a matter of time where they permanently ruined Greg too, and boy did they ever. He goes from a loving, great dad who gave Steven the best quality of life he could give him and what he had available to a selfish a who unnecessarily caused so much stress and turmoil in his and Steven's lives. To where Steven didn't even know he had grandparents that are still alive. Steven has a whole family he doesn't know about. If Greg wanted to live a hippie lifestyle where he constantly bummed for food and housing, that's on him. He was an adult and could make his own decisions when he chose that life. But he dragged his own son into this mess when Steven could've had a normal childhood, a normal life he badly needed.

In "I Am My Monster", not everything is fixed by the hug, it's just pulling him out of a crisis and giving him a chance to find a support group to help heal him over time. It's actually directly addressed in "The Future" by Steven having found a professional therapist. The feeling that the gems should be sad that he's leaving is completely understandable because Steven has spent his entire life with the gems being open about their emotions with him, and he thinks he knows how they would feel about him leaving. The gems acting in a manner that he doesn't expect is troubling to him because it makes him feel alone again, which is what he's been trying to fix for 2 months at that point. The reason he's leaving is because he has to have a change of scenery to heal from the trauma he has from his childhood. Since most of his trauma either happened in beach city or is gem-related, it makes sense that he would need to get away from the source of his trauma and probably one of the major triggers for his C-PTSD to heal from his fractured state of mind as much as he can

@@Camel_P_ox The thing is that Steven is probably the "best" person in the entire show when looking strictly at his impact on others. He's always been the emotional support not only for his peers but also for the adults in his life that were supposed to be responsible for him. His entire driving force was to heal others and save the world. Half of that is his genuinely huge heart, but the other half is instinctively yet unknowingly avoiding your own experiences. As you keep moving through life and collecting all those moments of trauma, it builds and builds and builds until you either deal with it or it explodes out of you. After so many indirect cries for help and how horribly he was breaking apart while nobody around him noticed or provided the support he needed, he lost it. It's not that it makes it okay or permissible or that he should be exempt from consequences; but it's that it was the direct explosive result of his constant self-sacrifice and everyone else's constant willingness to keep taking from him. There was so much emphasis on "he's not himself" because the discrepancy between his actions in crisis and his actions the entire rest of his life was SO huge, and even though his actions are his own, the people around him share responsibility in their complete negligence, gaslighting, and overbearing pressure. The hug definitely wasn't something to just make everything go away (though it did seem like it since the crewniverse was just too limited to expand that story), it was just a moment to calm his sympathetic nervous system down - like grounding exercises for PTSD or other mood disregulatory conditions. Once you ground the system, then you can start doing the work. So that's unfortunately what the team didn't have the time to work through or display between that moment and the month after when he leaves. I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I think when looking at what Rebecca Sugar and the crew found more important to convey in such a short time limit, I imagine they wanted to lean into exhibiting compassion, understanding, and validation for their audience who may have suffered or be suffering the way Steven was - while driving down the message, "It's okay to not be okay, and if you need help you deserve to go seek it."
@xchrysantha
@xchrysantha Жыл бұрын
@@Camel_P_ox I see where you're coming from now, sorry about that. And yeah, I tend to watch shows like a dream rather than understand them at face value and headcannon a LOT of things without realizing when it comes to really heavy emotional moments, and when I talk about certain scenes my friends will be like, "That...wasn't even in the show." So looking back, yeah that entire section of the show really was lacking. I ALSO AGREE WITH THE FILLER BIT, I like filler sometimes because I enjoy seeing characters in their day to day just doing silly stuff, but I CAN'T WITH RONALDO AND I'M SO PISSED HE GOT SO MUCH SCREENTIME. *sigh* But those episodes were written before Sugar knew there would be such a tight limit at the end, I'm sure if she had known she would've scrapped a lot of episodes. So basically what had happened was after Ruby and Sapphire's wedding, CN was like, "Alright buddy that's too much gay sh** we gotta shut you down," and Sugar and the team essentially fought back and were like "AT LEAST LET US FINISH THE DAMN SHOW LIKE TF," so CN gave them a movie and SUF. It really f***ing sucked. But I can see where the vision was and what would have been inserted had they had more time and space to work with it. (;n; ) I will say I didn't get the sense that "Steven's all good now." I actually got the sense that he was still broken but needed to just get out of the environment he was in to clear his head and discover who he is. Again though, that might be my own headcannon. I STRONGLY have identified with Steven since the beginning - I am him and he is me lol. And SUF was no exception, in fact it was really jarring and upsetting watching the whole thing. At the end, I saw a lot of myself in that after all the years of what I had went through there was a moment that blew up, and I f***ed off for like a year away from my family because I just felt defeated and couldn't be there anymore. I did the same thing about a year ago, I started discovering my boundaries and needs, and a lot of people did not like that and in a way turned on me. So I left home for a few weeks and went somewhere hundreds of miles away completely by myself because I needed to escape what I knew and discover who I actually was outside of that. As humans, we're very reactive, and a lot of times "who we are" is how we're reacting to and surviving a toxic environment. Sometimes you don't really know who you are and what you're about until you get away from everything you know. Anyway so for me personally it really didn't feel like "everything was okay," it felt like Steven hit his breaking point, his trust and faith in everyone he knew was damaged (even if they did "hug it out," it was enough to calm him down and ground him but not enough to repair the damage), and he left to remove himself from what he knew and emotionally cleanse himself. But I can see now how that's something I'm inserting into the story but really wasn't displayed tangibly in the show itself, and where a lot of the [constructive] criticism is coming from. And I wish so much that they could've been given the time to do that because it is too subtle and intricate to just imply in a "children's" show, and it's such an important message and piece of experience to get across.

That would really help since she doesn’t like being alone. They literally downgraded her character. They just made her annoying, loud, and bubbly. They made her recover so quickly. They also didn’t do anything on Pearls past. Not even more on Lapis or Bismuth. They also never said anything on how Spinel got a rejuvenator or the big injecter. SUF could’ve been better if it showed more character development, filled plot holes, progress on fixing trauma, maybe more about the diamonds, etc. I usually am not one to insult shows, but they gave us crap. Considering all the trauma Steven carries with him, that he literally experienced as a KID, I think that future had the right idea to represent how this is taking a hold on him now that he’s older. It’s nice to see Steven finally realizing that he’s not okay and be rightfully upset with everyone. I’m also glad that future made all the other gems and connie realize how they could be selfish and neglectful towards Steven’s feelings and past. These were such great points to bring up in the show, expect it was just excited very poorly:/ there was not much development for Steven’s new feelings from the dug up pain, and the ending is just so….lame. If they could have put more time and effort to show Steven overcoming these issues, instead of him giving a temper tantrum in every episode then I feel that would have been so amazing for his character! I’d love to see Steven figuring out a way to fix his negative traits BEFORE the last episode. Steven universe future could have really been something to take away from if only the ideas were more connected and followed through.

I think you're misunderstanding that steven universe wasn't really about continuing with what happened in the movie and the original show but rather showing that he had serious shit wrong with him and he needed help and to learn how to fix it, even the episode you mentioned as a "filler episode" with rainbow quartz and sunstone wasn't actually a filler episode because it still dealt with that theme of figuring out how to cope with things and finding out how to manage everything because he realized he couldn't do everything like people expected of him and that episode with spinel, the whole point of that episode was to show that he and everyone finally realize that they couldn't just depend on steven because he also had problems but they couldn't help him because they all got their help *from him* and he couldn't exactly talk to himself because he didn't know how to help himself and in the episode after that steven is denying everything *on purpose* because he didn't properly learn how to cope with things, I'm gonna put a link to a video that I think really helps explain why he didn't ever learn how to actually deal with things (kzbin.info/www/bejne/apDZp5h6pdqeZ5Y)

You do raise some valid points about there being a lot of filler episodes in the final season of the series I can sort of jive with that. Also, the shaving thing was kinda hilarious but could have been an animation error. Don't forget, this show is DEFINITELY familiar with animation errors (ex. character height scaling, Steven's right Flip-Flop showing up for a brief second in Everything's Fine after he lost it, etc.). However, I feel like Future does a really good job of resolving some of the bigger mysteries left unanswered from the main series, specifically all the Rose Quartzes getting un-bubbled and Pink Pearl's (Volleyball's) backstory and the exploration of the Reef (by the way I'm surprised you skipped over Volleyball considering it's one of the prime examples of showcasing Steven's guilt and trauma in correlation with turning into a Pink Super Saiyan). Plus, after Spinel's attack and the main series story conclusion, I was pretty happy with the story that Future had told because I wasn't really expecting a major threat level event to happen and was just excited for the story that the creators of the show wanted to tell. The best thing I like about Steven Universe (and Future) is that all episodes feel like they contribute to the next events in Steven's story. Even if most filler episodes aren't really that exciting or lower the quality of the show, I like how most of them are referenced in the upcoming episodes (besides Say Uncle obviously). For example, there are several instances of Buck Dewey wearing the Guitar Dad shirt (Steven prominently showcases the mirrored shades and T-Shirt cannon from that episode in his living room) and despite how much you hate Ronaldo (trust me, I hate him too) you cannot deny the fact that it's his constant badgering that he's one of the contributing factors of Steven going to the Moon to start learning about the chain of events of how he's actually Pink Diamond. I feel like we get wrapped up in the problems that this show has so much to the point where it dulls our senses to the quality of the storytelling that this show possesses. It does fall on its face sometimes (I REEEEALLLLY wish that Season 5 could've been a tense space adventure of Steven, Lars, and the Off Colors trying to get back to Earth while fleeing from the Diamond's Army instead of being a lot of filler) but when the show wants to tell a story, it executes it almost perfectly.

I understand your point about the plot getting a little rushed at the end, BUT I completely disagree some of the episodes being irrelevant to the plot I feel like the idea that Steven isn’t okay and he needs to understand that he doesn’t need to constantly be helping everyone and that he needs to be happy with himself is very prominent in the plot. Like I understand points like spinel, she def could of added to the plot in a great way but still the idea isn’t for someone to come and help Steven fix himself it that Steven needs to take a step back and listen to what he needs not other people.

ok so I actually like how Greg dealt with the situation. You can hear him say "hay we'll get you more ice cream, heck lets have ice cream for breakfast." like he wants so hard to help and talk it out with him but has no clue where to star. trying to give him objects to make him happy. after a traumatic event I went threw in freshman year of high school my dad got me chocolate pie and got me new clothes. it never made me feel better but he's horrible and communication. where they mess up with this is Steven stops listening, its all from Steven's point of view which is what really messes with development of other characters. maybe its just because i love Greg idk.

+rad tad ghost dad-Greg is one of the few characters the show didn't manage to entirely ruin. Offering to have ice cream for breakfast is such a sweet, Greg way to try to handle a situation the best he can. During Keystone Motel, he was so patient when Ruby and Sapphire were having it out with each other. He gave them space and didn't mention anything about Sapphire freezing the hotel room or Ruby evaporating the pool. He invited everyone to breakfast. When Ruby destroyed the diner booth, he not only tried to salvage the situation by offering to take the breakfast to go but he paid for the damage to the booth, even when he wasn't a millionaire yet. Greg is a very sweet person. The writers when they don't know how to handle him morph him into someone pathetically dense. He had really nothing to offer about how he felt about Rose being Pink Diamond. He said he knew that Rose had her secrets and he respected that she did and she never had to be obligated to tell him. Which is sweet, but Greg has NOTHING to say to Rose? Over how she started a war that killed millions? Put the planet she claimed she valued most of all into complete jeopardy? Got humans kidnapped or killed due to her actions? Screwed around with Pearl and strung her along, even all but laughing that Pearl and Greg were competing for her attention. And gave up her essence to have a baby without consulting him to where she left him as a single dad, unsure how to raise a half-Gem, half-human baby? When Steven morphs into a giant at the hospital, Greg comforts him. All right, well and good. Except, the next or a few episodes later, Steven screams at Greg over his grandparents and actually calls Greg a bad father. F. . .U. . .To where Greg doesn't get hurt or pissed off about that. Greg gave up everything to give Steven a quality of life. He sacrificed so much, and so much of his own happiness, to make sure Steven had a good life. And Steven calling him a bad father. . .is WAY out of line. Greg just says, "I'm happy you're honest." Da fuq? If I told my parents that, no matter how much they loved me, they would either burst into tears or bust me up. Sniping that your loving parents are "awful" is one of the cruelest, most devastating things you can ever say to a parent.

@@feraflauna3238 I mean but yeah, he always offers to listen but that never happens. It's like he's like "we can talk about it" and then proceed to list off a bunch of items that he can give them. Sure he doesn't know how to handle any of it, but it doesn't seem like he's learned how to either. I mean, I respect the fact that you personally didn't like it. People have different tastes and that's a fact. But I actually loved how they got dark. As someone with mental illness, the feelings attributed to stress, PTSD, and anxiety aren't something that can be portrayed through metaphors as the OG steven universe did. Spelling out how dark those feelings can leave you and saying "You need to talk and get help" is the best way of going about it. Sure the plot could've been tighter and the rainbow episode was weird, but I think they addressed the main theme they were going for and gave it a great resolution. They even showed that his problems weren't solved with a simple solution and was doing therapy to get a little better with time.

It's a children's show. I like it anyways it's one of the few shows that actually knows how to talk about mature issues in a honest way. That's better than most shows that either don't talk about it or if they do it's always fixed in a happy way that isn't real and the character go back to normal like they aren't affected at all. I think that aspect is very underappreciated since that is a bigger issue in media where everything is put in this happily ever after way when that's not how the real world work at all. I think it's a pioneer in that way

@@jg3825 I get what you're trying to say, but it's sort of contradictory. As you said you prefer when shows don't talk about it only to solve it in a happy way where everything goes back to normal? That's literally what happens in SU:F. The whole PTSD thing? I know they say Steven has a therapist now, but the entire handling of PTSD was honestly disgusting. (I would know, I've been diagnosed and treated for it myself. ) I would prefer a show not talk about mature subjects if they can't resolve them in a mature way, otherwise you muddy the water even further regarding whatever subject you're trying to handle. The ideas introduced in the first season gave me hope for a show with a comprehensible story, yet... while there are some things I admire about it, the entire show is derailed with inconsistent characters + confusing plotlines that don't go anywhere as well as too much time spent from Steven's perspective (i.e. everything plot related not involving Steven gets zero screen time to be fleshed out). Greg says "I'm proud of you" on purpose. it's supposed to show a different perspective of Steven's life without boundaries. Steven now sees his dad as a child, something he never thought his dad of before that moment.

You know that a real person who never got support from their parents, when their kids tell them that everything bad that happens to them are fault of his parents, they don't go: "I'm proud of you". They go from "What did you say?" To a growing anger and sorrow because not only their parents don't trust in them, but their kids are blaming them even if they try to help them and leaving them alone to not bother them and get them more problems. Gregs words are forced, and you may say "But his character never showed him like an aggresive person", thats true, but, do you really think that there is someone out there that never got angry? That was the perfect moment to show a more human parent that has feelings and cares about what people think about him AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, that he could have gone really emotional with the situation being that his own fucking son almost kills him after yelling and rubbing at his face that everything bad that happens to him is his fault. The "I'm proud of you" does not make sense, and there's no way you can defend it because the situation almost caused a tragedy, and it doesn't even work to feel sorry for neither of them because one does not care and the other doesn't do anything about it. It's just bad writing and it's not "intentional", just quicked up.
