Hypermiling or eco-driving is the practice of driving a vehicle in the most fuel-efficient way possible.
I just drove over 70 miles at 50mph on flat land at just above sea level. I wanted to see just home much MPG I could get out of the 2.7L Turbo Max engine in my 2023 GMC Colorado AT4. And was I sure surprised.

50 is a good speed to test for maximum MPG's. Because with a heavy body on frame and the aerodynamics of a brick the wind drag will cut into MPG's pretty significantly at 65 MPH even with the motor at low RPM's. I think aerodynamics is the biggest reason Trucks suck allot of gas.
@HiPlains1
@HiPlains1 Жыл бұрын
@@ToddCotta I wish more would run this test. IMO, it really shows/proves how aerodynamics is such a force against MPG's in truck applications. Also like many owners of the 1500 half ton have said that mileage really depends on driving behavior. If you run it harder and keep the motor in "boost" its going to suck it up. And is why mileage on turbo engines can vary allot compared to normally aspirated motors.

I have a '23 Colorado with the mid tier tune (300/391). I drove ~150 highway miles the day after I bought it, most of it at 70-75 mph without cruise control. My average was 26.5 mpg (according to the trip computer). That was 2 weeks ago, and I am making a similar drive this week and looking forward to seeing how much I can get with cruise. The hard part is not stomping the gas down low because its so much fun.

Your critiques have been good for thought processing, I was even going to fly from Woodland Ca to New York buy one and drive it home.. A week ago I went to Las Vegas for a week-----------they have 3 GMC dealerships so I spent Sunday and Monday just feeling things out,,Tundra Limited also.. Tuesday night I called Robert ( the salesman who I had best connection with) at Jerry Seiner GMC and told him I'd be in Wednesday to "build and wait 4 months for 2023 Canyon Denali ,.,., I got there at noon,, he said "before the build come out back and see what just came in"----30 minutes ago 2023 black Canyon AT4 arrived,, still had transport film and dust on it,.,..,,story already long but now over,, I just get home 600 miles with my NEW truck,, and they gave me $19000 for my 2018 Colorado-------- keep up with the break in information and THANK YOU

I think I'll wait for the hybrid Tacoma, I've got a 17 Ridgeline AWD that will easily run 70 and still get 25mpg all day long. Having to go 50 just to get 28 is atrocious.

Wow. Awesome what makes me feel really good is you were in AWD mode which uses alot more fuel than 2wd hi. So my guess and limited experience behind the wheel is yielding similar numbers at 65mph! Everyone talks about the poor mileage, but if your not pushing the turbo this thing is very efficient! 2023 Denali

80, 75, 70 and even at 65 for towing are common cruise control speeds on the interstate and are probably much better real world speeds to test for MPGs.

Just what I want to do - spend $55k on a truck and drive it 50MPG to get the best mileage. This video highlights the absoute absurdity of GM's new Colorado/Canyon twins. Gas is $5.00/gallon and nobody wants to buy a new car and worry about driving slow to save money. They want a hybrid like the 4000lb+ RAV4 that gets 40MPG driving at 75MPG.

I bet you if GM had a tune for 91 octane fuel, you'd see much better mpg numbers out of these trucks. A well known method of reducing knock is injecting more fuel. Given that these trucks are tuned for the use of 87 octane fuel and the fact that they have such high compression and boost, they probably require a higher octane fuel. I can't wait to see what the aftermarket is able to get out of these engines. Trifecta released some early numbers of 350hp to the wheels 😳😳😳

Not bad at 50mph but 19 at typical highway speed is not good. Very disappointing. Especially when there are people out there that have done milage tests with this motor in the full sized trucks getting the same or better. GM go back to the drawing board because this is poor. Especially with fuel prices this high. I wonder what the Ranger is getting.

Its odd that GM boast allot about the torque and power of the 2.7. But in reality to get any kind of decent MPG's you got to work hard to keep it out of boost. I expect this is the case for all motors using induction. In this case the truck was running allot on two cylinders. I have my doubts as to how that will affect reliability long term as I'm not a huge fan of AFM. I know the half tons suffer problems with lifters because of it. But IMO, the AFM is mostly a gimmick for normal driving. I'm sure GM gets allot of financial credits from the environmental empact and the start/stop etc.. Both of which IMO aren't the healthiest things for ICE engines.
@ToddCotta

The 2CYL active fuel management system rarely turnes on ECO mode. Seems like only when decelerating on a highway. It never went into ECO mode during this drive. I don't like AFM either. Nor do I like Auto Start/Stop. Thanks for watching!
@HiPlains1
@HiPlains1 Жыл бұрын
@@ToddCotta I think they put that to get environmental credits from the EPA and possible tax credits etc.. Because in reality it does seem to be a bit of a gimmick. Although I hear less trouble then the AFM on the V8 with the lifters etc.. Apparently this 2.7 was built from the ground up for AFM. Not so much on the V8's where they applied the technology on older engine designs.
