Can Hyundai's Ioniq 5 N win over combustion enthusiasts?
A performance EV with drift mode, shift mode, and variable torque split!
Subscribe for more videos! - goo.gl/VZstk7
Hyundai's Ioniq 5 N is a fresh new approach to electric performance vehicles. The car is packed with customizable features so the driver can configure the vehicle to their exact preferences. We'll deep dive into ten of these features, summarized below:
1. N Pedal - Developed as a solution to overcome the inherent weight and size of EVs, N Pedal was designed for instant turn-in behavior and enhanced throttle sensitivity, increasing the regenerative force to create a dynamic weight transfer that helps to sharpen corner entry.
2. N Torque Distribution - adjusts the front and rear drive ratio, providing fully variable torque distribution that can be adjusted for eleven levels.
3. N Drift Optimizer (w/ Torque Kick Drift) - helps to maintain the drift angle by balancing multiple vehicle controls. The integrated Torque Kick Drift function allows the driver to simulate the clutch kick action of rear-wheel-drive ICE vehicles for driving scenarios that require more immediate drift initiation.
4. N Grin Boost (NGB) - delivers an instant thrust from IONIQ 5 N’s dual motors by increasing the power output and torque for ten seconds
5. N Launch Control - provides maximum traction for the fastest possible start, allowing the driver to launch their vehicle like a professional race car
6. N Race - utilizes a motorsport-derived philosophy that optimizes resources for the best track experience.
7. N Battery Preconditioning - optimizes the temperature of the battery cells to be as efficient as possible.
8. N e-Shift simulates the behavior of the eight-speed dual-clutch N DCT of ICE N models by controlling the motor's torque output and power and simulating the jolt feeling between shifts. It provides the push feel of a DCT transmission and various levels of simulated engine braking using regeneration. The purpose is to increase driving fun, provide a more interactive driving experience, and deliver the same emotions of an ICE on a racetrack or a windy road.
9. N Active Sound+ - produces three sounds - ‘Ignition’, an ICE N engine and exhaust sound, and two futuristic EV sounds, including ‘Supersonic’, inspired by fighter jets - through eight internal speakers and two external speakers. Drivers can even rev the “engine” when N e-Shift is activated and transmission is in park or neutral.
10. N Road Sense - automatically recommends that the driver activate N Mode when double-curved road signs are detected. This lets the driver enjoy even more driving fun.
Honorable mention: e-LSD - The electronic Limited Slip Differential (e-LSD) controls the amount of torque sent to the rear wheels, enhances handling performance when turning at high speeds, and improves wheel-slip compensation. This is a real, mechanical differential with e-hydraulic locking action for the rear motor!

I work at a Hyundai dealer/garage. We just got one of these in white in. Charged it overnight and took it out and my god I never thought I’d love an EV so much. They really put A LOT of enthusiast type features in mind. The fact alone the shifts are so hard and fast slamming you with torque each gear. The engine sound is a little computerized but I’m sure down the line there will be updates. It has a “supersonic” sound mode that gives you a warp drive type buildup and to my surprise a loud explosion boom in each shift. Was cruising at 45 in 3rd switched to supersonic sound wound out 3rd going to 4th around 70-80mph on a back road and then hear this BANG. My heart dropped thinking I broke something haha. The things a blast to drive. Handles wayy better than you’d think. Definitely feels heavy but can put it where you want. Just a shame they’re going for over $70,000..

@@georgejones5019 Are you sure you do not work for HR, Because HR usually does not allow fun on the work floor? Let me tell you, having fun while designing and engineering a car is very important, as @stormix5755 has said. When engineers are having fun with a project, the end result will always be better, than the one of engineers who don't like the project they are working on. Because engineers who are having fun, really want it to succeed. They will also make the product more user-friendly because they want users to enjoy it, and experience the same fun. Take the Mazda Miata for example. The engineers had a lot of fun with that project, and it became one of the best cars ever made. (ask Bob Hall) And yes. safety and function are important. But, making a fun product with the user in mind. will make it a success. Only safety and function with no fun factor will make it boring. like HR does.

My brother-in-law works for Hyundai. Core of the engineers for this project are around my age or younger. That means we grew up playing video games and Grand Tourismo. Electric cars allow from programming to simulate what we grew up playing...but in a real car...on the road, not inside a screen. I've been saying it since this was available in my market since last year. While other car manufacturers brag about augmented reality for their navigation system (my company car the Genesis GV80 has a real nice fluid augmented reality navigation system BTW) Hyundai built a video game that you actually drive on the road. *The sound from the Evolution mode is directly from an experimental car from Hyundai that exists in the Gran Turismo game. So again, the game reference.

It's really hard to capture the in car sounds on the mic he's using, it's designed for speech. The funny thing is, all EV’s have to behave like a gas car. If they put all the power to the pedal like an on off switch it would be impossible to drive. The problem is they’ve all been tuned like a CVT gas car. Even the Tesla Plaid has a little bit of a rubber band kind of feel off the line (except for launch mode obviously). I feel like this is a much better way to program the acceleration peddle.

I feel the same way about modern turbo BMWs and Audis which suck every last drop of energy out of the exhaust leaving them quiet. All I want is for Hyundai to go even further. Why just simulate a 4 banger, when you can do a V8, V10, V12.. etc.. More better.. custom tuned simulated car packages.. etc. Yes, I ilke shifting. Yes downshifting is really just like adding regen, so same effect, different interfaces. Not shifting is faster. I don't care.

I have been very interested in this, a sporty EV for enthusiasts. Then i saw the price... But this is a great show of intent to keep building fun cars.

Thanks for the video. Not doing up your helmet was a nice fit somehow during engine noise riding, afterall pretending all the way 😅

_...and it's got REAL BUTTONS on the steering wheel, not silly capacitive pads that will het activated by mistake a hundred times! Clean styling too. I love it!_

Ok, I'm glad this exists if it will get more people to buy EVs. But for me fake ICE noise is the dumbest thing ever. The best thing about my EV is the quiet acceleration. I love that I can accelerate up a steep hill, with no noise and no straining engine. I can't imagine voluntarily adding the noise back.

From my reading, Hyundai and Kia have hired many BMW and Audi engineers and designers.

I think this is actually innovative. Consider that one of the big complaints about fast EVs are that they're souless and have no character. It sounds like Hyundai listened and solved an issue people were complaining about.
