Love the look of this car, it's a bit more old school boxy looking. I know you don't buy something like this with economy motoring in mind, but the range is a bit of a shocker even without a heavy foot.
@EdwardSinclairАй бұрын
I agree, but then that seems universally correct when it comes to performance "SUVs", their economy is just horrendous, ICE or otherwise... no lead foot needed indeed.
@onehorsepowerАй бұрын
Like you said, not intended for economy motoring. Enjoying the driving, the range for me is similar like high power gasoline cars. Then it depends a bit on charging infrastructure, but that will only get better so it felt completely right to go for this car, it charges 270kW and just like with the gas car, I'm not actually in a hurry and enjoy my breaks. 95% of the time I charge at home/work anyway and then it's just very convenient and extremely cheap to run vs 10-20 mpg 98+

I am lucky enough to own this car and my range if I drive carefully is in excess of 260 in summer and are expecting probably 210 in winter. Even reasonable spirited driving, I’m seeing 200-220 miles. I give you that the turning circle is poor and the electric consumption isn’t great, but you don’t buy a performance car of this calibre for those 😂
@ChronicBintXАй бұрын
I have one, indicated range at 100% charge is 222! However I drove 106 miles in eco mode and had 59% left so 260 sounds doable but at the very top end of the range! but we didnt buy one for the range. 😎

Good video. Had my N for two weeks or so. Very pleased. I like all the customisation - from Eco mode to all the unnecessary N tomfoolery. But that’s what makes it fun. And it has the space for all your clobber. Cheap to run on overnight electricity. I do wonder why the USA version seems to be quicker to 60mph. Why?
@markymarkreviewsАй бұрын
USA figures always do 0-60 with a "1 yard roll out" or some such, so not from 0 mph but just above so as not to put too much strain on a car's transmission. So it is more like 5mph-60mph times and not 0-60 like here in the UK.

I'm middle aged, single, and a serial 911 owner (i.e. probably not target audience). However, this car is quite appealing, except, for one man and his dog, too big, too heavy, too many doors, and too expensive. But, apart from that....! ETA I also own an E92 M3 which I consider fat and heavy!!

@JohnLee-db9ztАй бұрын
250 miles in eco mode. This was proven by Korean reviewers.
@sooncheolyoon759Ай бұрын
You can expect 260-270 on eco mode. It should do 200 miles on winter in UK ON Eco mode.. It has performed well in Korean winter which is a lot harsher than that of UK. Hyundai/Kia's estimated range is very conservative. 220 miles range means 220 miles on N mode driving like a maniac.

Why is it so thirsty? I keep trying to understand if smaller, less powerful motors are more efficient. Math and physics says no, it's not like an ICE car where small displacement means less air+fuel pumped to make the car move. Even in ICE, large displacement geared very conservatively with a 2nd overdrive can surprise. But what about EV motors? Does a feeding a big and small motor the same input power when they are rated at the same efficiency (at their optimum RPM) result in the same output, regardless of their ultimate potential power output? If so, does that mean the only way you get better efficiency out of a smaller motored EV is to encourage less hooliganism, less tire slip? Seems like dual motored cars have more production emissions impact, more long term reliability liability, and potentially double the (heat) losses in energy, specifically their controllers, in extreme conditions. I'm finding my RWD i4 eDrive40 is not particularly less efficient in Sport mode and driven with a heavy foot. Much like Pulse and Glide benefited ICE hypermilers, Pulsing an EV for (relatively) quick acceleration means you more quickly move to Glide, than if you accelerate with less power but take much longer to get to Glide. I should note, I'm talking about greater than 4 miles/kWh efficiency none the less, so not stating an inefficient EV can't show a difference between carefully and quickly driven. Where is the subtlety where Lotus or Caterham builds an extremely small motored EV car with an actual gearbox to create the variable torque multiplier. No, I'm not talking about the relationship of low torque at low revs in ICE that required seemingly was why we needed multispeed gearboxes. I'm talking about low total torque and power from the whole miniature motor using the gearbox to help it move the mass from a start, but still turn at optimum speed in top gear. Think Suzuki 50cc Gran Prix motorcycle with 13 speeds. We've taken the lazy route blaming the losses of a gearbox and the zero RPM torque as our excuses as to why gearboxes are counterproductive on an EV. But no EV on the market uses a single direct drive hub motor to effectively provide 1 wheel drive like a RWD Volvo with an open diff spinning a single rear tire in the mud. EVs all use multiple reduction gears in their drive box plus a diff, so let's not fall prey to the fairytale that EVs have only the motor's rotor as a moving part, and that they can't afford the inefficiency of a gearbox. I ride multiple e-bikes, a MTB, a bamboo cargo bike, and a racing tadpole recumbent trike, all with mid drive motors, and varying gear combinations. They are all benefit from the 9, 27, and 54 speed selectable drivetrains altering the torque multiplier of the motor, respectively. I need to downshift to take off from a start, because top gear is far too high for them to start from a stop. But they all benefit from having that high gear (or at least my legs do) to keep that motor humming at the internally geared reduction speed. Can we, will we abandon 600+ HP thirsty toys and revisit the frugal days where 50cc motorcycle class existed, despite also having 125cc, 250cc, and 500cc classes? Will we seek efficiency and fun, and return to driver engagement without silly efficiency reducing fake shifting 5N trickery?
@karlInSanDiegoАй бұрын
Did they rate it for poor efficiency/range, assuming everyone would drive them in the poor efficiency mode (fake shifting) and drive them way too fast on every road they travel?

In short, there is a place for a (lot) smaller EV fun cars, and efficiency and fun. Governments need to put the weight back in taxing vehicles if we don't want to all end up in cybertrucks, so to speak. But for what this is, it has the interior space of a X5M/Q8 e-tron/Cayenne, it isn't heavy really. Your i4 is a lot smaller interior wise and even heavier as the M50. Aero in this 5N isn't great (but the design is imho), also it has the cooling and tyres and brakes to support its performance around a track for the whole charge, and that does cost efficiency. 800v regen on brakes helps track range and endurance though. Talking about efficiency, this uses about 5x less energy than a comparable ICE car around a track. That is pretty impressive and a big leap forwards. Gears add complexity and weight and little benefit, Porsche does run 2-speeds to some benefit.
