I used to do a twelve hour drive from NRW in Germany all the way down to Austria to go skiing and the trip was always broken into two hour chunks. Every stop was for a minimum of 15 minutes with one for at least 45 for a good break for lunch. Non-stop we could have got to our hotel in a bladder busting ten hours but who wants that? Anyway, I get the feeling that if I charged for even a short period each stop this car would do the trip without any issues whatsoever.

The Ioniq 6 is definitely an impressive car, but also expensive. I've not got the same range out of our 6 year old Ioniq 28kWh, but I've certainly got the efficiency. Yesterday we drove 119km from Greytown -> Masterton -> Porirua in the rain with outside temps around 5'c and climate set to 20'c and got 13.2kWh/100km. Last month we drove 107km and got 12.5kWh/100km, and you can pick up an Ioniq 28kWh for $24k

I bought this car two moths ago, partly based upon your evaluation of the range and performance overall. I actually find it a very comfortable car to drive, in Australia the suspension may be tuned a little different as Hyundai engineers came to the 'land downunder' to check out our road conditions. I really LOVE this car, so much so that I actually take it out for a drive just to enjoy its ride. It is so lovely to ride and a quantum leap from my old 2005 Ford Falcon station-wagon. Well done Hyundai 👌😎😁

I'm a decades long fan of cloth seats. You never have to worry about sliding inelegantly out of the car onto the ground after a long sweaty drive in summertime and there's no sticking to the seat, suffering excruciating pain as your skin tries to part ways with your legs either upon egress.

In other countries, there appear to be options of a light grey or a beige interior. Talking to a BYD salesman (I know, not Hyundai but an example), I learned that we can’t have those colours in NZ because only black will sell here, so they try not to import anything else

@@alexshepherd Can't understand why black is so popular. You always used to be able to get light coloured interiors in Aotearoa and most went for those. I eventually got sheepskin carseat covers. Absolutely brilliant in both hot and cold Kiwi land, summer or winter.

I got similar economy on a recent road trip but I have the SEL RWD with the 20' wheels here in the US. Mix of city and highway miles (around 60-65mph) and I averaged around 4.6mi/kWh = around 350 - 360 miles! Had myself, wife, and small dog plus some luggage and climate to 1 fan speed (also crazy how powerful/strong it is at a low setting.. I've never needed it higher) Also, great video! Engaging and fun. I would only disagree with some of the ratings.. performance would be a 7.5 (because it still rips when you put the pedal down in sport mode anywhere between 20 - 50mph because of the instant torque) and an 8 for comfort. Even with these bigger wheels/rims, it is super comfortable and soaks up bumps very well. I wonder if the suspension is tuned slightly differently here in the US.

Interesting about the maps thing I have an iPhone but don't use Apple Maps, my default is Google Maps. Forgot to say did you use coast-mode(regen 0) at all particularly on downhills? I drive my classic 28kWh Ioniq I coast where I can and use the flappy paddle regen all the time. That is good efficiency though your average speed was around 80km/h??

Hi, thx for the test ride. Well done. If you are riding alone then I would like to recommend to use the "Driver only" setting of the climate control. To reach the 614km range you have to reach 12.6kWh/100km. But it will not be possible with the cruise control. You have to drive yourself and "sail" as much as possible. And... it is possible to meet the WLTP value 🙂 Kindly Stephan

I plan to buy a 2025 limited here in the US. I am torn between the RWD and AWD. I like the extra traction for snowy weather capability, but at the same time I want the extra range. I'm looking into 18-in wheels as a compromise.

Great video, I tow a large trailer to Taupo from Auckland and then back to Auckland with my EV. I think you didn’t need to slow down on the way back to Auckland as it is always more efficient Taupo to Auckland (downhill) vs. Auckland to Taupo (uphill) so your predicted in Taupo will be wrong as you were driving uphill to get there and not allowing for the downhill drive home

Hey, Gav, excellent review and test. My MIC Model 3 AWD has done 550km, on a warm ish night, at 90ish km/h, on a long country drive, so similar. The 3 appears to be rated at 13.8 km/100, but the EPA 602 is a joke. Typically, it does 16.5, in SE NSW, with 10-15'c ambient, at 100km/h. Luv the car though - drove across Oz last year - easiest I've ever done out of 15 trips (over 50 years). We ARE living in the future, but millions of #ICEHeads don't get it!

@@Kiwi_Dave But can you charge it at home ? 90% of the time people charge their EV while they sleep. It takes 3 seconds to plug it in and 3 seconds to unplug it the next day. Another data point is that I drove a base Model 3 loan car from Auckland to Papamoa (243km) in May, in the rain, using 45% of the battery, and achieved 115Wh/km average (can’t put the photo here but I do have proof of what the car said). The $64,000 question is whether I could have achieved over 500km range from that cheaper, relatively small-batteried Model 3, but anyway, I was impressed at what it could do :) After a steady 110km/h on the expressway, it told me to stop in Hamilton, but I bravely ignored it and got home with 2%

So you averaged 67.6km/h for your journey. Considering the Waikato Expressway is 100-110km/h you must have had some really slow bits! 13.2kWh/100km is pretty good, but I get 13.0kWh/100km day in, day out from my Model 3rwd on NZ roads. So for $30000 less (after rebate) I’ll accept having 100km less range. I have test driven the Ioniq 6. Not impressed.

I’d love to see you do a drive like this, but partner up with another EV or even an ICE vehicle. Compare fuel efficiency of the lead car vs the car “drafting” behind (at a safe distance of course). Switch places for each direction of the test, assuming the terrain is roughly equivalent in each direction.

Gavin: what's been the reaction to Tesla pulling the right-hand drive Model S & X in NZ? I think Tesla treated those customers in right-hand drive markets pretty shoddily after having had their orders on hold for so long, pulling the availability with virtually no notice. Personally, I think Tesla should have fulfilled those existing orders as matter of honour, ceasing to advertise the cars from now on. As for the removal of the long range Model 3 from the website, this may have been down to low order numbers, making it a nonviable product.

Norway are pulling out hydrogen refueling stations and putting in EV chargers. Hydrogen refueling pumps are 20x the cost of a EV charger. Bus fleet companies in Norway trialled hydrogen but have gone with battery electric. A hydrogen refueling station can only refuel about 8 cars before the station tanks need topping up. A hydrogen car is almost a quarter of a million USD. Hydrogen tanks and gubbins take up more room giving less passenger and luggage spce. Nobody is making clean hydrogen at scale. Hydrogen is super hard to contain and transport, even nasa had issues on Artemis. If nasa can't 100% control hydrogen sure as hell ol Trev the local mechanic is gunna blow up his workshop.
