Hyundai Kona 2025 - A Great Car For Non Car People!

I have been driving this car for 6 months after having previously driven an Ioniq 38 for 3 years. I don’t understand some of the criticisms, particularly about range and charging speed. The new Kona will go well over 300 miles in summer at about 5 miles per kWh. It was about 280 miles range today on a cold and wet winter day at 3.8 m kWh driving at 70 mph on the M4 from London to Swansea. Did not need to stop for a charge. Could not do that in the old car, always had to have a charge on this route of about 200 miles. Charging speed will be just over 100 kW, that is double what the older Ioniq could get. Not as fast as say a Kia EV6 but it is a cheaper car. I am not bothered about what it looks like, looks fine to me. I would recommend it to anyone that wants an efficient mid sized EV.

Had my Kona since April and I love it. When I ordered could only choose the Advance spec or Ultimate, and couldn’t justify the price difference for the ultimate on the lease price. Added the “comfort pack” (heated seats, heated steering wheel, wireless charger and privacy glass), but was disappointed by the lack of other options (would have loved the upgraded stereo and option of electric drivers memory seat. Used as a main family car with my 9 and 6 yr old kids, and we have plenty of space, it replaced an Octavia estate and we haven’t struggled with the lack of space. Have to say I think the build quality is incredible, it’s great to drive (and I’ve taken it from Birmingham to Scotland, Worthing and Exeter on trips) and incredibly efficient (getting 3.7 - 4 miles/kwh at 70 even in December), your figures surprise me, is it because of the bigger wheels? Mine was comfortably getting 5 in the warmer summer months… And you don’t need to go into menus to turn off the speed limit bongs, a software update just means you need to hold the mute button on the steering wheel in for 3 seconds to change it to info (display on dash) only I test drove the megane, was too small, smaller range and felt cheap for me. The e2008 didn’t compare and the Niro was more expensive without a heat pump

Have this in top spec. It’s a very decent car to live with. Comfortable, well specified and totally confident for reliability. Screens are great, build quality is solid. Getting around 250 miles in winter, 280 in summer per charge would probably get more if I’d gone with the smaller wheels.

The car you were driving has 19" wheels. That affects the range by about 40 miles. You can opt for the free 17" wheels. The 17" wheels also decrease the road noise slightly.

I've had this version since the summer, got around 3.5 m/KWh during storms last weekend in the wind and rain. Though the charge isn't as powerful as some the charging curve is very flat at 94 kW which had between 7 - 48% at new GRIDSERVE 350 kW

I had previous model 64kw Ultimate which averaged 4.3mpkw in winter and 4.8mpkw in summer covering approx 11000 miles per year over 3 year usage, now got Ionia 5 77kw rwd Ultimate which has averaged 4.0mpkw over 10,000 miles between mid July to mid December driving approx 500 miles travelled per week with heater on during cold weather and AC in summer which I’m very pleased with. Massive saving compared to any ICE car @ 8.5p per kw. 77x0.085 =6.545 £6.55 for between 310 miles summer and 270 miles cold weather (4 to 8 degrees) no complaints here

This looks much improved over the previous Hungry Hippo style. Robocoop look is at least better. Main problem ius the offset charge port that is super obvious and messes with my OCD! Also it seems they have improved pricing a lot and are aware of that £40,000 Tax in the UK that is a so called luxury!

I have had the N-Line version with the 19” wheels for about 6 months. Done about 5k miles in it so far. Great car and I would easily say nicest car I have owned and wonderful to drive. Yes the 19” wheels do take a hit on the range but I preferred the look of them so knew that going in to it. I get about 220/230 Motorway mileage doing 70 ish on a full charge, and that been in mild winter weather with some rain. The onboard charger being 11KW is great as get a bit more juice if you need to on the 22KW chargers in public. I haven’t had to charge publically much but when I do again the speed has been fine, peaked around 90KW with no preheating etc. You are right about the noise. Again nothing much worse than other petrol/diesels I have owned from Skoda/VW/Volvo/Kia etc but again the wheels don’t help. If you want more range and less noise get the 17” and you will be fine, I just prefer the N-Line and N-Line S 19” which I think look the best out of all the range, even the top spec ones im not a fan of.

TBH, I'm happy with my 2023 64kWh Kona Ultimate. Bought it when 6 months old and SWMBO prefers sitting in it to the 2020 Tesla M3LR we had.

We’ve had the Ultimate since April and very pleased with the efficiency, better than you reported but we live south of Yorkshire. Having driven a Prius for 12 years I wanted a HUD and this Kona has one which is well integrated with the navigation system. I find this so relaxing to drive. Two niggles: the car does not remember the driving mode, always resetting to ‘Normal’ on start-up, unlike the gen-1 Kona; and the navigation system is fiddly to use. There is a related Bluelink app which is good in parts, though Hyundai are threatening to charge a subscription for cars 5+ years old.

Top of my list for my next company car mid-next year (will be ordering around March). Yes I know there’s the EV3 out there and the Elroq, both of which are newer and better cars, but they are about £100-£150 a month more to lease! The 65kWh Advance fits nicely under the £40k luxury tax band, has great range, great space and the charging speed works for me - I rarely do long journeys. Don’t care that much about the anonymous looks and image - too old for that! It’s just a great all rounder and spectacular value for money to lease. Hoping lease prices don’t change between now and March!

Thanks! You’ve sold me this car because, as a car nerd, you don’t quite get why most people have a car: Practicality and a good drive are essential, the rest is just expensive ‘nice to have’ stuff. Also, an EV with a rear charger socket is a pain in the anus - I simply won’t buy one. Most people want to drive straight into their driveway or public charge point and plug up. Rear charge sockets are for people stuck in the ‘fuel cap at the back’ generation. When I’m doing my regular 200 mile round trips in my previous model Kona (230+ miles range in the winter at around 4m/kWh average) I’m not looking at the decor - I want reliability, comfort, quiet motor and music. As for looks: EV’s don’t need a grill - but you old guys haven’t noticed. Maybe that could be an optional bolt-on - like the dado rail and wallpaper in your lounge.

Just Google it. Every country states the same thing. Visibility Reversing into a parking space allows you to see your surroundings more clearly and avoid backing out into oncoming traffic or pedestrians. Maneuverability Reversing allows the wheels that steer the car to be at the back, which can help with maneuvering.

@@ElectricVehicleMan Thanks for the lecture but forward parking is safe, legal and more convenient for me in all charging circumstances I have encountered, especially with a rear camera and blind spot alarm. I also don’t want a car where the bulky connector with longer cable sticks out of the side to trip up the postman. If you have a serious issue with front charger sockets despite their obvious practical and aesthetic advantages, then it would be worth mentioning in your video so people can weigh up the argument for themselves.

Open to low speed shunts and damaging a charge port rather than a bumper.(ask leaf owners ) There’s no extra trip hazard at all, the cable sticks out less than a wing mirror. And we never said it was bad, we said we preferred the other. And finally, answer me this. Are you saying that every study is wrong regards to reverse parking vs forward? Prove me wrong.

We have the previous face lifted model of this car (64kWh Ultimate model). Bought as a 1 year old used car for half of its price when new. A Goldilocks car in terms of its size. Not too big or too small. Shame this one has grown in size a bit. Loads of knobs in our car which is fine by me. Excellent range, 270 with ease in winter & 300+ in summer with no heat pump & it's currently averaging 4.3miles/kW. The only real drawbacks to our car are front tyre wear (new tyres at 15,900 miles) & the ride / suspension which is fairly firm / choppy on uneven roads - which we have a lot of. Tyre noise is quite high which I hope to lessen by the fitting of 67dBA new tyres on the front. The rears still have 6mm of tread so it will be a while before they get changed. Ours has been reliable up until today when we had a BMS warning pop up on the Infotainment system. This could well be the 12v battery issue. Would I upgrade to this new Kona? Probably not. The new one is larger so I'll be looking at the forthcoming Skoda Epiq which is probably smaller but has a bigger boot. We'll see.

We got the N line S ev in march this year on the motorbility scheme. Cost us £1500 on top. Other than the doors being very plastic and the ambient lighting being a joke its been a fantastic car for our needs over the last 9 months and 2400 miles. Its showning 4.2 kw/h since new.

I've got this car but with a shale grey interior which is so much better than this charcoal interior, they also offer a sage green interior depends on spec and exterior colour. I just wished my Hyundai had of given me the option of 17 or 19's for the tires rather than stuck on the 19's for the top spec which I have. Being in a hot country not a fan of glass roofs so the sunroof which is bigger than the previous gen is perfect plus means I can close the shade if it gets really hot. The main thing I find with Hyundai is they have the dead zone for my left foot between the stupid footrest that all cars have and the brake pedal very few cars have it and being tall with my ratios my legs need the room and that little extra room is good to stretch my left leg out.

Here in Jersey (the new one) we have tons of Konas. Some are even electric. The most popular model? Gas w/AWD. Sadly, there's no AWD electric model. It would sell here if they could get it right (the gas AWD is probably the least expensive family AWD SUV on the market, tho I haven't checked). We have a '22 electric and it is fantastic.

I like it. If this had been available when I ordered my Sal sac car I probably would have ordered it. I ended up with a Kia EV6 instead, lovely car, but a bit too big and not very efficient. Strangely, although the Kona 2 only been out for about a year, compared the Kia EV3 and Skoda Elroq it’s already starting to feel dated.

My complaint with Hyundai cars is that even their top spec cars always look and feel cheap materials wise but they do not have a cheap price, I cannot fault them technically they just do not seem to justify the price. If only they would improve the materials used overall it would be worth the money but as they stand I simply couldn’t justify spending the money on one.

I don’t agree. I have a top spec Tucson and previously a top spec Skoda Karoq and the materials and fit quality are either equal or in favour of the Hyundai. I’ve driven the top spec Kona as well (mild hybrid variant though) and I’d be interested to know what specific aspects you have in mind when saying that.

Intersting review. The styling is best described as marmite. As a car, the EV3 is better in many metrics. I prefer fear wheel drive EVs which would probably lead me to a Born of EX30.

These are great used cars too. Autotrader has a few 3 year olds from around £14K. A Bargain for the size/range! I would argue it is a car for car people who just want to move to an EV and not have any hassle. A Tesla is more of an image thing, to be cast away when the next shiny toy comes along.

Electric hippo for me and over styled side profile which is a pity. But in this version, it has everything you could possibly want in a car with a great warranty. Just a bit of a shame it is not as efficient as the first gen. An increase in weight has to be the reason. I think as these EVs get more powerful, RWD is the way forward to prevent torque steer. They just handle so much better. And would have been nice at this price point if it charged faster. Now that the VAG group 400v architecture EVs can charge at up to 185kW, this slow charging Kona is now not good enough in 2024/25.

Can't adjust my eyes for the Hyundai Kona.... In parts it's OK looking but in general it's a mish-mash. Especially the rear with it's stupidly ugly lights out on the wheel arches. Overall, I couldn't bring myself to drive one. As spending money, it needs to be on something that I "want"

The Kona has a permanent magnet electric motor which will not give great range.I prefer wound stator cars like the Zoe .They might not have the instant acceleration but will do 4.1 on a run.

As a city car with the odd 100-140 mile motorway drive it is fine, a bit boring, a little overpriced for the top spec. On a cold day with a 200+ mile motorway drive I suspect the range will be a bit limiting. If you want a boring functional car, the Kona is fine - but my first choice would always be Skoda

​​@@NickFosterThat is actually quite a relevant point about what car to get re which is the best position with regards to where your home chargepoint is. I reverse into my drive (I also used to do so in the old ICE car its the easiest way to park at mine) but I am parked sidewise onto the house with the front of the car being the closest to my front door. That is where the charge point is. This being dictated where the electricity supply etc is in the house. So for me a charge socket at the front and ideally to the right is the best spot. At other very similar houses on my road , even quite close to me, due to the dimensions of their drive, the cars are reversed in with the rear of the car closest to the front door. So for them a model with a charge socket at the back would be better placed.

Not had anyone pull into a charger that I'm about to reverse into. It's about positioning your car to make it impossible for someone else to pull in, while make the maneuver easy. Also if you have home charging, a rear charging port is often more sensible, as it means reverse into the drive, so, more importantly you can drive straight out again. The highway code says not to reverse out of a drive.

I would ike to have seen under the bonnet. EV motors are much smaller than gas engines of the same power, and we don't need the long bonnets anymore, yet they seem to still have them just because the proportions "look" right. Except to me they don't.

It feels like they've made it bigger just to fit a frunk in there, but nobody had a frunk before Tesla invented it, and nobody wanted one then. I'd rather lose the frunk and have a shorter bonnet so I don't have so many problems at blind corners.

Agree, the front rear and sides to me were designed separately. It doesn’t come together. Test drove one in the summer and it did not seam to be any better than the Kia e-Niro we leased at the time. Internally the car is a big improvement.

God that's fugly. Always feel a bit cheap to the touch compared to a Kia even though they are anything but. Kia just seem to have that extra something, don't quite know what it is, attention to detail, care, quality???

It’s looks dreadful with a dull, cheap, dated looking interior and Hyundai’s seem to date badly on most of their cars. One of the best warranties as it cover everything for 5 years unlimited mileage. The MG warranty is dreadful check the MG warranty document it covers practically nothing after 3 years pretty much just battery and motor are cover after the first 3 years on MG’s

I love the channel but I've always thought it's pointless wasting time describing how a car looks on the outside. That's the ONE thing the viewer doesn't need help with. - As for the car itself, I find it really disappointing. I was expecting more range or a significantly lower price. The Kona seems to be slipping behind competition, especially in light of KIA's EV3. This seems like it should be £5k cheaper at all levels of finish. The pace of change is incredible in the EV World, but this seems to offer no more than the previous versions. if the base version gets below 200 mile winter range then in 2025 that's a fail. Why wouldn't I get a used KIA Niro EV with 5 years left on the warranty and save 7 grand or so?
