Hyundai Palisade 2021 review - The bigger Santa Fe we’ve been waiting for?

That breeze you can feel is the collective sigh of relief from everybody at Hyundai Australia now that they finally have a proper three-row large SUV - the Palisade.
Yep, until now the mid-sized Santa Fe with its squishy third row has been the only seven-seater SUV in Hyundai’s range and it’s been competing with the bigger Toyota Kluger, Mazda CX-9 and Nissan Pathfinder, along with rivals its own size.
Not only is the Palisade larger than the Santa Fe, but it has eight seats and a look that should scare anybody that sees it in their rear vision mirror.
We drove the new Palisade hundreds of kilometres at its Australian launch, climbed all over it, and sat in all three rows so that we could bring you this review.

Great review. I watched just about every Palisade review before buying one and this was both informative and fun to watch. Great editing - I’m in Canada and they are marketed at very different trim levels (and of course the steering wheel is on the other side) plus no diesel option but you covered a lot of things no other reviewer has that are relevant to any buyer anywhere. Nicely done.

The review was very good and in detail, thanks for that. I was excited to see this vehicle but when I booked a test drive, the Hyundai dealership at Parramatta, NSW refused test drive because I was not a serious buyer ! Hyundai wants only serious buyers, they want people to confirm if they are buying or not, then they will allow test drive. I called another dealer casually and had a similar question if I was serious in buying. I guess they do not have sufficient vehicles in the showroom but the Hyundai website advertises differently, misleading customers.

It's like Holden's 24 hour test drive. The dealer would ask you to sign a contract before they lent you the car for 24 hours... Just tell the dealer you're 100% serious and take the car for a LONG test drive. Then tell them you need to think about it! Two can play that game!

Nice review! Not really sure why he keeps clamoring for a hybrid though. Only the Toyota Highlander and Ford Explorer offer hybrids in this class. And the Toyota is very small, while the Ford is no more efficient than the regular model. Hopefully you guys will get the Sorento Hybrid. It's really sweet!

A bit of tig wiggle for you. Htrac is fwd during normal operation. It operates just like 4motion’s haldex center differential (waits for slip) That’s how we get good gas mileage for an ‘awd’ vehicle

Price is 10%-15% more expensive than what it should be. At $81k drive away for the fully optioned model, we should have gotten the equivalent of a Palisade Calligraphy sold in the North American market. That has a lot more options than our Highlander which is a grade or 2 down.

Hi, great review. Our family is looking into The Palisade here in NZ, However for some reason Hyundai NZ Palisade Pricing is twice as much in comparison to the rest of the worldwide 🌐 market? I asked Hyundai NZ yesterday what the reason was and they responded with some BLAH BLAH BLAH answer that really doesn't made sense. Is it possible to buy from Australia and ship it here in NZ?

Be aware, there are currently 2-3 week delays in Hyundai Australia actually supplying this vehicle as there is an electronic module that requires changing that Hyundai will not release a vehicle without but are not telling customers about up front...

A 3:55 you see the centre console and a large, unsightly blanked off switch. That is in fact, (in other markets), a button to switch on/off the remote engine start feature. Why did Hyundai Australia consider this feature not worthy for the Aussie market AND on an 80k vehicle??

Hi Richard. I’m a bit confused to choose between Palisade diesel and Petrol. After test driving all options in this range, I want to buy a palisade. Cons with petrol is Milage and no AWD. I am hearing Diesel engines will be banned in the cities by 2030. And I may travel around 15000+ kms a year. As I want to retain the car for long run (10 yrs - 15 yrs), how wise it would be to go with the diesel car. Need your advice!

I don't understand why these 'cheaper' large 7 seat SUVs don't make it to Europe! In the UK cars are usually cheaper than rest of Europe but still a base Sorento costs £39k! Santa Fe is about the same! How much would this cost in Europe? Probably almost £50k!

This guy tries to be funny and falls flat! Palisade is a stupid name, too American, too thirsty and too expensive. 16 cup holders - it's an accident waiting to happen. Even so, it will probably sell well but what does this say about the taste of the average Australian?
