Thanks for posting this video with such detail. I recently used this as a reference to successfully check, drain and refill the transmission fluid on my '13 Kia Optima at 135k. I also used some info from a Kia Optima forum I subscribe to about using three gallon-sized bottles of fluid to properly flush out the old fluid and maximize the new fluid. While I drained just under a gallon of fluid, I completely flushed the old fluid and put back enough so that the fluid was just barely dripping out of the fill level hole. I also heeded the transmission temperature recommendation, and acquired a wireless OBD scanner tool from Amazon that let me confirm the minimum threshold of 122 degrees. I was able to acquire this during a Black Friday sale for under a hundred bucks. Without the scan tool, not sure if I would have attempted this. I indeed notice a difference in the way the car feels now after this procedure. Much, much smoother ride!! The tool was certainly worth the money as I also have a Hyundai Santa Fe that I will be performing a transmission fluid D&F on as well in the near future. Although the cost of the scanner has gone back up, it is still a cheaper alternative to the one used in the video. It is a VIDENT Bidirectional Wireless OBD2 Scanner. Thanks again Bennie!!

When I did my Toyota. There is a obd2 jumper method to check trans temp without scanner. Some people say just check pan temp with temperature laser gun, others say no because outside pan temp is not accurate to inside. I did both methods at the same time to check accuracy. My temperature gun was about 5 degrees lower when the obd2 jumper method to dash lights kicked on. In most cases I think temp gun to transmission pan is accurate enough. The temp gun is say is 5-10 degrees reading under the temp inside the trans pan

Crazy you did it with 1 gallon. My 2.4 gdi 2012 optima manual says 7.5 us qt. Which I got similar extract I did measure it. That’s just shy of 2 gallons. Also to people scared of using the valvoline. My owners manual says ATF sp-IV Kia genuine or other brands meeting above specifications. Good thing I had bought 2 gallons just incase. Though I should have checked the manual first.
@bennieaustАй бұрын
I always state what it actually took when I did it because, for whatever reason, it seems manuals and google searches frequently are wrong. It can vary from year to year so it may not be exact for everyone, but it’s real world what it took for me. The most important part is doing the level check procedure correctly so that, no matter the quantity needed, you have it filled to the correct level.

Bernie -- Great information -- I am wanting to change the trans fluid on my 2019 Elantra SE with the 6 speed automatic that has 55K original miles and as far as I know the fluid has not been changed, but ... OK so there is ACTUALLY TWO (2) Fill plugs that I see people using! One is under the Air Box (after removal) and this plastic plug is actually the "VENT" for the transmission CORRECT? The factory "FILL HOLE" is towards the rear and a metal 24MM plug like the 24MM metal drain plug -- CORRECT? Does the Manufacturer (or dealer) use the VENT PLUG or the METAL FILL PLUG Location to add fluid? That is my question!
@bennieaust5 ай бұрын
@@retiredperson4054, that’s actually new to me! I was unaware of a second plug. I’m sure that would make filling easier because venting is always the issue when filling like I show in the video. I’ll look for the second plug next time I service one. Thanks!

actually you want to drive 50 to 100 miles and repeat the process so that you get all the old fluid changed as a drain and refill does not get the fluid out of the torque converter. You want to do this especially since the first fluid change went 40K miles over
@bennieaust8 ай бұрын
I agree, with going so far over this should be done again. If done on schedule there’s no need to do anything beyond the recommended procedure.

I got my 2017 hyundai sonata's engine replaced at the Hyundai dealer where a purchased the car. When doing so, i had them do a drain and fill on the Transmission because it was over due with 107k miles. Am the second owner and i bought car with 18 k miles. After a few months of driving the car i started getting a shudder at around 40 to 60 mph. At first i thought the tires were unbalance and when i went to have them balanced they told em it wasnt worth it because i need an alignment and i needed new tires. After getting new tires, its still doing the shudder at around 40 to 60 mph. So now am convince that the dealer must of screwed the drain and fill up and now the car shudders on the drivers side where the transmission is. I was to do another drain and fill my self, but i dont have an even surface to jack the vehicle up. I made an appointment at the dealer so they could take a look at it. But am afraid that they are going to scam me for lots of $$$. Should i wait for the dealer to check the shudder or should i donthe transmission drain and fill my self. Am a DIYer and do some things my self. But i have never done a drain and fill my self. Your video is the most detailed video on youtube on how to dona drain and fill on a Hyundai Sonata. But my worries is that i dont have an even surface to jack the car up. I could probally put the fron of the car on jack stands and then jack it from the rear with an heavy duty jack and check it tonsee if incould level it as best as i could. What do you think i should do?
@bennieaustАй бұрын
I think the best advice I can give you is to take it to a shop or friend you trust to get the shutter diagnosed. That's a much better starting point then just servicing the transmission because it might be related. If you do decide to service the transmission, whatever you can do to get it level will work. Jacks stands all around is a good option.

I accidentally removed a 14mm little bolt from right behind/under the plastic overflow cap. A few drops came out of it but it appeared to not really do much. Did locate the actual drain plug with magnet after wards…… hopefully my transmission isn’t broken now ha lol! Does anyone know what the little bolt near directly under behind the overflow cap does? Man, I always do something stupid doing repairs and maintenance on the cars!

If you measure the amount you remove and then add that much back in, is it still necessary to get the transmission oil up to 122 and check the level? I don't have a scanner. Thank you.

If you know for certain it is currently at the correct level then that would work if you don’t know for certain it is at the correct level right now then I wouldn’t recommend it.
