This is a common question being asked by those who either simply want to produce photos at home but simply do not know what printer type to get.
Of course the serious Photographer shoould choose a dedicated photo printer which are available in many models and prices.
What is your Maximum size print you foresee needing?
Are you going to print often? You really should!
If not then maybe outsourcing would be a better choice.
Try not to purchase TOO MUCH printer. It will end up costing a long more up front and maybe you would only print large prints once in a while.
Today's choices for a person begining to print photos at home are:
EPSON R2000 R3000 PRO 3880 / 3800 if you can find them. EPSON P400 P600 P800 or CANON PRO-100 PRO-10 PRO-1 ant the newest PRO-1000

Jose. my pro 100 died so I changed brands and bought an Epson XP 15000 and I printed out a printer calibration chart, just like you recommended. Believe it or not when I compared my pro 100 chart to the xp 15000 chart and I was AMAZED! The epson chart wasn't a little better but a LOT better. I did use the printer driver for both printers, OEM inks, and OEM papers only. You should check out the XP 15000 by Epson. You'll love it too!

@@cheo1949 it's a fantastic printer! Amazing, gorgeous prints. Just cannot get even borders on all 4 sides. Even after trying your "Borderless Method" and reducing the margin extension to zero (all the way to the left in the Canon print dialogue box Page Setup screen.) Prints still come out with wider margins on leading edge of paper and at top, with a horizontal print. I'm pretty frustrated with this. I don't have Lightroom, I print through PSE. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Thank you Jose for all your videos. I’ve learned a lot from watching lately. I am one of those photographers you mention who has always sent out his images to get printed by an online print place. I used to have an Epson 1400 a few years ago and a few Pixma printers and they’ve all worked well. I haven’t printed in a while and am considering a Canon Pro 100, pro 1 or even a Canon IP8720. @@cheo1949 I bought the IP8720 a month ago -- STUNNING IMAGES! Rich, saturated colors, beautiful tonal range and detail. Just a fantastic printer. DPI 9600x2400. That's more than the DPI of the Pro 200! This 8720 sells so fast that B&H and Adorama, even Amazon can't keep it in stock. It's always got a "notify when in stock" banner on the item. The 13x19" images will blow you away. This is a wonderful printer.

I would not recommend either one. Not a beginner. Way too advanced and are meant for often production of prints. If you are in the USA I would choose a Canon pro100 instead since can get them with massive rebates. Later on as you learn the process you can also switch to third part inks to save money.

Hi Jose.? I do schools photoshoots all over the country but I spend a lot in printing. I would like to purchase my own printer and I have no idea which printer I should purchase. I need a printer that can print a thousand copies with a high-quality range in all sizes. what would you recommend?
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 6 жыл бұрын
That's a tough question to answer. Is this printing volume going to be years around or only seasonal? I will consider any of the EPSON or CANON Roll type printers. you could design picture packages ( Different Sizes in say 17x24 layout ) then you need a good trimmer. Or as most schools do, a picture package layout on 8.5x11 and let the customer trim them. You want a printer with large volume carts to reduce ink cost per ML. I would look into the EPSON SPP5000 or the CANON IPF PRO-2000 oh and only use OEM inks!!!!
@namzeebrown7018

Thanks for the fast response, I really appreciate that. Yes, it's going to be around for years. You are right, I print all the pictures on 8.5 x11and the customer trim them. We also do A5 sizes too. the reason I mentioned all sizes is that we have other clients but we mostly focus on 8.5 x 11 and A5s sizes. All we need is a high-quality printer and reasonable cost of ink. Thanks for your assistance, Highly apreciate.

Since we had problems at work with a Canon printer and 3rd party cartridges, I have always used Epson printers and original inks. My current one is Epson XP-8500 photo printer. It can print remotely by wifi if needed. Scans & copy's without using computer. Also prints & copies CDs and DVDs. 6 cartridges, individually replaceable. I don't like recommending things but would say it's definitely worth a look.

Hi I didn't know how to write to you so I just picked one of your videos. I have a Epson 1410 printer as I said before, and I have been trying to print a 23x13 inch panorama with this printer. I did manage to print the panarama photo, the paper of printed with was only 200gms thickness. when I printed, the printer was catching the edges of the beginning of the paper. if I was to use a thick paper like 250gms would that make a difference in not catching the paper, I know its a hard question. I thought maybe I need to have a decent border to stop the paper catching. Please let me know what your views are.

You must make sure that the paper is dead flat. If the leading or trailing edges are the least curled they will be hit by the print head which will cause smudges.

I have never really trusted ink jet printers to make quality images until I recently started to compare what I could do in my studio to lab prints. I have a Canon iP7230 printer that I purchased in a rush to print text documents a few years ago when my older printer died. To my great surprise, when I began to print photos on it with OEM ink and Canon paper last month, I could see that what I was producing was in some ways superior to what the lab could do. Of course, there are also benefits to lab prints. My printer cost about $130 US dollars, and the prints look outstanding! It's shocking how good the prints look. For an artist, there's nothing like controlling the entire process.

Hi, I recently checked on many videos of yours. I’m an experienced photographer but I’m looking to get into home printing. Still recommending the 100 over the 10? In my country the one is pretty easy go get used around 200 euros but I’m hesitant for his harder way to refill compared to the other two as well as the cartuges size since I’m probably non doing that many prints. What about printing solution for larger sizes than a3+? Thanks!

The choice between either printer is whether you wish to print with pigment inks or dye inks. The PRO-10 is super easy to refill. No modification required. The PRO-100 requires a modification to be performed and if you do not do it correctly you have to start up again with new OEM carts.

There is also not black ink.switch problems like on equivalent epson. Epson uses 9 inks and the Canon uses 12 resulting in maximum gamut. If I had the room and of course the $$$, about $2700, I would buy one without much thought.

Yes it can be. If you decide to use precisioncolors inks after you begin to use up the OEM , you can use PC's great free ICC profiles so unless you really want to get into profiling your own papers, you can just get the Colormunki Display for the time being. You need to make sure your monitor is actually displaying correct colors and set to much lower luminosity value than you might be used to using or you will tend to edit your images actually darker due to the very bright usual monitor settings. The results will be dark prints.

I like to keep my photos as natural as possible so mainly use the basic photo editing program in my Windows 7 and I have a basic program on windows 8.1 and PS Elements 9 on my tablet but don't really know how to use it, would I be wasting my $$ on purchasing the Canon Pro 10. I mainly take landscape photos including rustic vehicles and barns that are left abandoned around the country side. I have had a couple of my rustic truck photos transformed into oil paintings which I have sold online but would like to try photo prints,would I be wasting my time purchasing the canon Pro 10 as I would not be using it every day. I know that you have mentioned that you must print with it every 2nd day surely the auto clean would not use a lot of ink I assume it would be cheaper than printing a photo that you really did not want or need. Cheers Glenn

This point will always apply. If you do not plan to print often it will be best to farm out your work. But if you will print at least something every few days and value the ability to fully control the printing process though it will be a learning curve not to be taken lightly then yes, the PR-10 would be an excellent printer for your type of work.

I can only suggest what you is available to me here in the USA. You might try eBay and hope for the best. Certain products are very difficult to obtain in foreign contries.

Starting up in printing at home. Was going to buy a Canon Prograf Pro-1000 until I heard your recommendations for newbies printing at home. Decided to eventually buy the Pro-10S as its price has just been reduced to £374. Don't know if that's a result of Black Friday or wether it's End of Line. You have some great tips on your channel, still going through them, very informative.

Hello Jose. I'm a beginner to photo printing but not photography. I'm starting to sell prints but I'm concerned about my cost. I've been using WHCC (my last order was $110) and am thinking that orders like this could go a long way towards buying a printer. I really like WHCC and the few issues I've had with them have been resolved quickly. I tend to print on their Lustre Photo Paper with Linen Texture. The photos have always matched what I see on my calibrated monitor. A local camera chain has the Pro 100 priced on sale for $260 US and the Pro 10 for $449US (I'm in Canada). That's a saving of $150 and $200 respectively. In all likelihood I will use the Precision Inks...you convinced me of their quality in comparison to OEM. So the question I am asking...should I go for the Pro 10 or Pro 100? Is the difference between them in printing costs and quality significant? Incidentally, my black and whites are becoming important. Thanks in advance.

Either printer will produce great prints but since want to go 3rd party only the pigment ink PRO-100 would suffice. If using OEM them either printer will provide sufficient print longevity.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. (Wow!) A follow up...the Precision Colors products you speak so highly of don't work well in the Pro 10?
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't say that. Their pigment signature edition inks for the PRO-10 / PRO-1 augmented with OEM red will produce excellent results. Their current dye inks for the PRO-100 will as well. The difference is the pigment inks will produce much greater longevity that theirs or ANYONE else's dye inks for the RO-100. Nothing to do with PC or any other inks. OEM will always outperform 3rd party in overall quality and longevity. If you sell your prints you should use OEM. If you use anything else you should let the customer know otherwise.

All of your videos (that I've watched so far) have been great. I don't have a printer yet, but am considering buying a used Epson 3880 from a seller on craigslist. They used it in college from 2011-2014 and only lightly since then. Do you think it would be wise to purchase a used 3880? If so, what should I look for before buying it?
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 7 жыл бұрын
Does it produce a 100% perfect nozzle check. You can access the total number of pages printed via the LCD screen. 3880 official life span is 15k prints or 5 years whichever comes first. That's not to say it will last beyond that.

The seller sent me a nozzle check yesterday and it didn't come back 100%. They said it just needed a maintenance cartridge. Not sure how true that is. I'll probably pass on it and search for something newer like the p800.
