I ate it when it first came out in Hawaii, how I prayed for c-rations again. If you tried feeding this to a dog, it would probably bite you, run from you and report you to the ASPCA. This was the early equivalent to the later mre vomit meal. Troops today do not know how good you have it.

Back in the late 80s, my stepdad (army) worked at the depot/outpost (place where rations and uniforms were stored) doing inventory. He didn’t make much, career army but somehow never managed to advance much because he was a mouthy asshole. We were dirt poor, I mean starving at times kind of poor. One day he brought home cases and cases of these MREs that I think were set to expire. My sister and I were kids so it was like Christmas for us, we didn’t think twice and dug in. Once a day we’d pick an MRE and sit together on the floor and make it always eating the sweet treat first. It took us months to eat through the boxes we had, but they were filling and fun for us to make. I don’t think he was supposed to dispose of them by bringing them home but I’m glad he did. Now I know they’re probably not the most healthy meal but when you’re a starving kid, those MREs taste like lobster and caviar.

I fondly (yes sarcasm) remember the franks and beans MRE, and yes, had lots of dehydrated catsup. Like another commenter noted, pork patty was the absolute worst. Was in the first Gulf war and when we deployed to Saudi, lived off of MREs for two meals a day for the first month+. Chicken-al-a-king was the best one and the best condiment was the cheese spread. Unfortunately due to the heat (Saudi in August/September) they discovered that the cheese spread and anything else with dairy in it was spoiling, so we had to go through and get rid of it. Any way, thank you for these videos, brings back lots of memories, Semper Fi.

Man, some of the MREs from the early 2000's were like fine dining when you're really hungry. I personally loved the five cheese tortellini, the ham and shrimp jambalaya, and the red beans with rice. They do get old when you eat em all the time, but by that same token, if you were hungry enough, and were lucky enough to get one that you actually liked, it turned into a real treat. That's from the time I was in too. I remember when the MREs first came in, replacing the box of canned C-rats we used in the 70's. Peanut butter was my favorite, both in C-rats and MREs. The difference between the two was you always got OD green paint from the can lid in your C-rat peanut butter. That little p-38 that came with the rats was hard for me to use, so I got the larger P-51s from the PX that had a spoon on the back for leverage and to spread your peanut butter with. I still have one on my keychain today. I guess old habits are hard to break. Thank you for your service, sir.

Really depends a lot on how the individual MRE is stored. If it was frozen at production and kept frozen, it could still be edible today. If it were freeze dried, i would try it at 42 years, especially if it was kept frozen. Freeze dried foods can last 25 years unrefridgerated. Frozen slows down even the very slow decay that can happen in shelf stable meals.

He was truly a fighter tougher than woodpecker lips. This video reminded me of him a lot. In his fatigues doing a taste test. Thank you again for triggering some great memories.

A nice blast from the past! I remember eating these when I was stationed in Korea and with a bit of work they were not to bad (there were worse MRE's in my opinion *cough pork patty cough*). I used to add the ketchup to the beans to give the beans a bit more flavor which helped if you didn't have any Tabasco sauce available. The franks could ether be eaten separate, or... cut into chunks and mixed into the beans. Of course having the ability to heat them up was always an improvement. Always enjoy your videos. Happy Veterans Day and thank you for your service.

If I remember correctly the frankfurters were marked “Not for pre flight use” As a communications guy we occasionally installed remote communications sites where we had time to get creative with MRE cooking. Basically cooking a stew in the canteen cup with your preferred MRE, and believe it or not the pork patty MRE was the best for this “stew” as it came with crackers AND cheese. I would get all of that going together in the canteen cup (with the hot sauce of course) and cook the “stew “ to the desired doneness. Admittedly it looked kind of gross, but it transformed what we all thought was the worst MRE, to the most desirable. The pork patty MRE was hands down the best if you happened to have the time and resources to cook it.

After I watched my first video of yours, some years back, I went to a Military surplus store and got one new for $10 some years back. I still use it today. It's the only dish I use. Thank you, sir 🫡👍 Semper fi

@@mattnobrega6621 I never had a bad meal in a chow hall in the Corps. Some were better than others, but I always ate everything they put on my tray......Thanks for the good food you guys provided. Semper Fi, my brother.

@MeAncient Yea, same here. Food was currency in the field. It helped me a lot. Especially during tough situations. We paid in extra chow, and we got free haircuts in Afghanistan (only cost a case of chips). Good times. Oooorah and Semper fi brother 🫡

My grandad used to get me mres back in the 90s. The frankfurters I tried had a really strong vinegar taste. I guess if you like pickled sausages, you wouldn't have a problem with them. But that is what they reminded me of. They were dense and really vinegary but at the same time bland. They didn't have any seasoning so all you could taste was vinegar. I couldn't handle it.

The catsup didn't help, either. Sounds like you have a good grandad. TFW

@MeAncient Yeah he was a jump master in the 82nd airborne. He knew the guy running the PX for a while and when they had extra surplus sometimes he would bring stuff to my grandad. Not sure they were allowed to do that. But it was a win for me.

I learned the salt in bitter coffee trick from an old stoner lady that lived near me. I would often go over in the morning to chat and have some coffee, and one day it was particularly bitter. Put a few shakes in and it did improve. It doesnt ouright take away the bitterness, but it kinda tones it down

ill be honest here, Steve would have already eaten half of this meal and commented on various taste and flavor and thats HALF the fun with these !!

I'll be honest as well....I thought that I was the first one to come up with the idea of trying MREs on KZbin. I had to start getting comments about Steve before I realized I wasn't the first. All that to say, I haven't watched his videos as I want my reviews to be my own ideas and thoughts about the MRE. I won't eat something that I honestly believe will make me sick. Good luck to anyone who will eat one that's 'bad.' I'll live to eat another day........ TFW!

We transitioned from C rations to MRE's in 84 , while doing 40 days at the NTC at Ft. Erwin. The MRE's were a welcome change from the C Rats , but by the end of the 40 days, we wanted our C Rats back....

Sour milk carmels sounds like Buttermilk Carmels. I bet you some grandpas in Minnesota would prefer such a exotic flavor 😂

You know, that's true. I like butter milk. Maybe I should just chew one up and see. Good idea. TFW

I mustered out of the Navy in December of 1980 in Sicily, Did 11 months of inactive reserves for my 6 yrs. VP56 Sub Hunter. Never had MRE's till the 2000's. Hey. I was in Naval Air, what can I say. But I do have them now. Along with a lot of Sardine paks.
