Vader's delicate lightsaber swing is taken directly from the Empire Strikes Back film (the first wide shot after Luke gets up from being knocked down early in the fight) - it was such a distinct movement in the game, and then while watching the film and noticing it I couldn't believe the developers actually referenced the film choreography in the game sprites - gotta give them props for that!

For what it's worth, all those seemingly random monsters and robots that serve as enemies and bosses in these games were apparently actually pulled from Lucasfilm concepts. I remember reading a multi-page feature in Nintendo Power that showed off a lot of the work that went into the making of these games back in the day that showed that off. Pretty much anything that was in the movie in the background, and whatever ILM and Henson Creature Shop didn't feel like making into actual puppets or animatronics for the production, were considered and often made into enemies. I have no idea if they mentioned why they often just made them GIGANTIC or whatever, but that was pretty cool to see. Particularly a lot of the monsters in Dagobah, like the boss of that area? Very cool design, and I'm glad it got used in the games even if it was never made into the movies as a background monster puppet or whatever.

The reason why they didn't reuse the regular storm trooper sprites from Super Star Wars in Super Empire Strikes Back was becaues Cartridge Space was at a premium and Lucasarts didn't go with a publisher that would have given them a cartridge with more space. They had to fit everything within 1megabyte for Super Star Wars, 1.5 Megabytes for Super Empire Strikes Back and 2 Megabytes for Super Return of the Jedi. Also the Games were developed by Scuptured Software not JVC, Lucasarts didn't have much in the way of publishing or development ability to make console games. It looks like JVC wasn't that giving with Cart Size especially with non Star wars games. There were games that had 4 Megabytes in 1994 and 6 Megabytes by 1995, They Released a game that was 1 Megabyte in 1995 albiet with battery Backup.

@WesDoesGames For Cartridge games especially it was more space efficient to swap a set of sprites to a separate palette, preferably one already being used, than make have a separate set of sprites. But there is a difference between a good challenge and being unfairly difficult though and the Super Star Wars games fall into the latter category. You have no choice but to get hit by the enemies and that is a reason why everything gives you hearts. There is no pattern to the enemy movements and it just seems the enemies are just placed randomly without any thought put into the level design.

I skipped getting an Xbox because I bought a PS2, and not until some years of owning four PS2's and a second Sega Dreamcast, I picked up another PlayStation at a local thrift store with another modchip, and after already owning an Xbox 360, and also having an Xbox One a few years later, but didn't buy any PS3, PS4, nor PS5. Nintendo wanted to show off the 3D capabilities of the N64 rather than rerelease SNES games that weren't that old at the time.
@bifftannen15982 ай бұрын
@@KasumiKenshirou - they probably could've put it on another game as a bonus toward the end of the N64's life cycle being they were using way more memory at the end. They could've completely redone the 3-D Mode 7 stages using the N64 hardware. Would've been a nice treat

What and make them a blurry load of puke like all the other N64 games, no thanks.
@bifftannen1598Ай бұрын
@@rogercoad1088 - if it was Factor 5 doing it, it would've been done really well. They used the N64 even better than a bunch of intenal Nintendo teams. Just look at Rogue Squadron

the new trilogy needs a side scrolling platforming game

8:59 The "insect people"? That's one of the bounty hunters hired by Vader. (and respawned in the game ad nauseam, of course :DD) Couldn't remember the name, so googled: 4-LOM. And a droid, not an insectoid.

"No other game hated their players like this" I don´t think it was as hard as contra or mega-man, but souls like creators probably developed their fetish with these games.

I can definitely see the connection, especially with the creative but horrifying monsters

Super empire strikes back is the best in this trilogy, especially the audio, that yoda jungle stage music is sublime

These are like the most challenging Star Wars video games I have ever played. It’s a good thing I still beat them though.

at the time they were the best sw games for me

That was probably pretty easy considering the games that came out before it, lol

They should remake this trilogy... and add Scorpion Vader as a secret boss.

I will *never* be okay with Chewbacca not getting a medal with Han and Luke. Definitely a fair time to pull the race card imo

Good to hear "yub nub" at the end of Jedi and not the discount Enya thing...

@@WesDoesGames To each their own 🤷 I saw it when it first came out, so partial to the old. Not that it's *bad*, actually like Enya, but can't forgive the whole empire falling everywhere at once (even if it's what I imagined as a kid). Expanded universe made sense with there always being some degree of imperial remnant, it being too big to just collapse at once. Still, great vid!

I remember playing Super Empire back in 1995 at a friend's house. I hate it cause I sucked so bad. I thought I was just terrible at games in general, but it's good to know it wasn't just me and the game was actually difficult for most people.

Empire was definitely the hardest, then a new hope, then return of the Jedi. I beat return of the Jedi as a kid but could barely get passed the first stages on the other two

All three of these games were criminally hard, I love challenging games but these games made me want to break the controller in half, they really weren't that much fun because of it

Fun fact: The speeder bike level in SROTJ is not mode 7, just an animated background. I know you didn't refer to it as mode 7 specifically, you kinda just implied it by saying it was "pseudo 3D" (having referred to mode 7 as "pseudo 3D" a few other times in the video).

Christmas 1992 I worked over the holidays and earned £100, knowing super Star Wars had just came in to the console shop on import I bought it the first day back at school (it was £70 but I felt like a millionaire with my earnings) on lunch break. Wow, all the kids from school knocked on my front door that night to see it.
