Prior more isekai were temporary, like digimon or SAO, where you gained access to a fantasy world, but not that you were reincarnated into it. Though it didn't originate the "defeating the demon lord" trope or the harem trope, even though it does touch on elements of both

Before this era of isekai, another world stories were filled with MCs trying to return to their original world or going back and forth between isekai and original world. Digimon, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Inuyasha're such stories. Those're what's popular for sometime till SAO put a twist on it and make Isekai boom. Riding on that wave, in Narou (a webnovel site), a new generation of Isekai stories were published one after another. All with the twist of their own, the year was around 2012. Mushoku Tensei with isekai reincarnation story after being run by truck. Re:Zero with a story about transported to another world like Inuyasha and MKR but with a twist of harem in it and witches. Konosuba with its comedy. Also TsukiMichi with the opposite concept of MC basically being kidnapped from Japan then abandoned by the Isekai Goddess in her world. MC's a descendant of Isekai people being Isekaid to Japan, and the transfer happened because it's in his parents' contract with the goddess. Out of those titles, the one that started the trope of reincarnation, truck-kun, adventurer guild, OP MC, complete with harem in Isekai genre was Mushoku Tensei. It's so popular during it's writing that it's always at the top ranking of Narou website even years after the webnovel ended. It was Slime Tensei that ended its reign in Narou, tho it went back up ever since the anime is airing. Due to its popularity and massive success, there're many other isekai stories that copied its formula, recycled those ideas and tropes in MushoTen but with little success, because most of them missed the heart that made the tropes good.

Ok so the reason that Gisu got to keep his clothes while Rudeus was stripped is because in the Beastfolk Culture there is no worse shame and punishment than being stripped naked and being doused in water while imprisoned. Gisu was caught cheating at gambling and is just being imprisoned for a few days, Rudeus was a suspect in the mass and coordinated kidnapping of dozens of children.

What's funny and haven't been shown in anime - the dog kept visiting him in prison to play, even though beastfolk kept the dog in its shrine and the prison was locked, he still managed to enter it and play with Rudeus. XD

Aside from the character progression of Rudeus as a person, what makes Mushoku Tensei stand out as an isekai is that it has an actual moving story, some fleshed out worldbuilding and the characters all have their own agenda and lives. Its pretty fascinating to have an isekai where the main goal isn't defeating the demon king or something 😂 instead here its finding and reuniting with Rudeus' family.. and to take advantage of this second chance at life to the fullest. The fact that Roxy and Rudeus never met up again at all for the whole season (even now in season 2) helps sells this world as real and really big. Everyone has their own goals and are travelling in a different part of the world. The characters don't just constantly conveniently meet up again with the protagonist at one point, as doing that would make the world feel small and the existence of other characters self contained to just Rudeus which isn't the case at all. The story may revolve around Rudeus, but the world doesn't. And that's what I find so cool. Other isekai's would have the other characters consistently in the same realm as the protagonist all the time as if they only exist to be with them and not have their own life and goals outside of the protagonist. But not Mushoku Tensei. There are some season long arcs and time skips where characters don't meet back up with Rudeus again for months, even years.

The manga did start being made until 2015 around the time the anime was starting to be produced. The author is also not really known for this series but the universe he created with this series in it. This series is his 6th series he created and his second Isekai. The series took off when the Isekai fandom took off in 2011 in Japan.

The future-seeing eye was a bit much too, but as far as OP character upgrades go, it ends up being pretty tame. Loved how Ruijerd still laid the smackdown on him after getting it.

The light novel is an absolute masterpiece and the anime will be too in the future as we get to the best parts of it. Mushoku Tensei is legitimately an incredible anime. The story on its face is basically 'anime adventure story' but well done. The character development is an incredible, slow, realistic look at deep trauma and healing. The world, meanwhile, is the most alive feeling anime world I've ever seen. MC travels, and comes back, and finds out that TONS OF STUFF happened while he was away. He travels more, and meets people who know him, not because he's famous, but because they met this other character that knows MC and left a couple years ago and at some point they talked. The world happens without the MC. And then there's the animation quality, the pacing of the story, the massive scope of things. MC is absolutely OP at first, then the scope changes and he's really amateur, then he grows and is OP again, then the scope changes again and he's just P, then he grows again and is OP, then the scope changes a LOT and he's suddenly the tiny fish in the big ocean. And at the end of the BIG story beyond the anime, he's definitely powerful, but he's still around #7, and DEFINITELY not #1. And seeing your pinned comment, I now expect a video all about how you were wrong. But not entirely, Rudy's absolutely a perv.

But he is *not* oveprowered because swordsmanship is superior to magic in this world. He *CONSTANTLY* loses in the show. He lost to Paul, who is only Advanced Rank in three sword styles while Rudy is Saint Class(HIGHER than Advanced) and yet he still loses to him. Rudy has lower durability than anyone else in the world because he can’t use touki, which is what gives people high durability, as well as allows swordsmen to do things that are impossible to do with swords in real life. He also loses to Ghislaine and Eris all the time(he literally only ever beat Eris *once* and that was right after he got his demon eye). He lost to the kidnapper when he and Eris were kidnapped, would have lost to Gallus if the sacred beast didn’t intervene, he lost to Orsted, not to mention what happened with the hydra(will happen in season 2). Again, he loses all the time. A character is only overpowered when they *don’t* lose all the time. An overpowered character, as the “over” part implies, is when they are above *everyone else.* He clearly isn’t. Literally the *only* thing that could be considered “overpowered” is his mana being on par with Laplace, but considering he still constantly loses, that clearly doesn’t make him overpowered. People need to stop overusing the term overpowered.

Even though i love Re:Zero, Mushouku Tensei is definitely the best isekai I have watched. I would even go as far as to say it is one of my personal favorite anime of all time. I really enjoy that it isn’t rushed and that they give time to flesh out the characters development. I recently rewatched it in anticipation for s2 and i still think it has kept it’s magic even on my third watch through. It has a certain fantasy setting that is unmatched and the soundtrack is so beautiful and fitting. Especially with the intros that bleed in with the story. Can definitely recommend!

To Rudeus, that piece of fabric serves as a memento of the person who helped him out of the 20-year-old curse that had strangled him in his past life to the point of killing him. Had it not been for Roxy, he'd still be stuck indoors, he'd never been able to explore the world and meet so many people. The "holy relic" is a hopeful reminder of his potential to change, and a symbol of comfort that represents all the hardships he's already overcome.

I feel like people use OP for too many things in life. You got unique powers? OP. You got all 100/100 on your tests? OP. You got slightly better reaction time? OP. You got hands? OP. You're still alive? OP. OP, for those who don't know, stands for Over Powered and is used relatively. You can use mild variations, like "Talented", or "Gifted". OP Rudy would've immediately been able to be great swordsman as well. Gifted Rudy on the other hand has talent with magic, not with swords. And no, you don't need to watch 900 episodes to come to conclusion that some character is OP or not based on whether or not they loose to someone. Good storytellers give hints to characters having strong and weak sides to them, and it's totally your problem for missing them, by retracting in your shell, hiding behind cliches you've seen before and trying to apply it to everything you see. I've seen many people fall prey to this behavior, including myself. It's an uphill battle against our own subconsciousness. Be vigilant.

It almost physically hurts me that Nux is comparing this masterpiece to all the 'trash isekai' that came after it. Like yes, most of what he's saying is true... but Rudy isn't just OP as a plot contrivance, and Sylphy doesn't join his harem because "damn he OP and good talker and ooga booga he good looking". There's so much more there, and all the characters' actions make sense as you get to know them and this beautiful world. Even Rudy being a perv -- of course he is, he was a shut-in for 30-odd years with a porn addiction and no prospects, surviving off his parents' good graces. He thinks of this world as a game until it kicks him in the teeth and forcibly shows him that no, his actions have consequences (like in the forest with the other adventuring kids where he decides to wait and the bird guy dies).

Yeah, one of the most awesome things in this show is its worldbuilding. Everything is carefully crafted on multiple levels. And there are even additional things from the light novel that were cut out, such as the nature of dungeons that I thought was really cool: Dungeons in this world are seen as something akin to a type of monster. They're living beings born when magic energies pool in caves or grottos. The magic coalesces into a crystal of raw energy that acts as the dungeon's heart/brain, and it then creates a creature to protect the core. Monsters consume magic, and thus are drawn to dungeons out of a desire to reach and devour the core. If the monsters die in the dungeon, either at the hands of other monsters or to the core's guardian, then their magic is absorbed to grow the dungeon and its guardian. Most dungeons die very quickly, but a few grow large. Humans enter dungeons for the monsters themselves wandered in as well as a sort of magic item lottery. There are no items just naturally created in the dungeons, they're all things people had with them when they entered, or things monsters had accidentally carried in on their bodies or in their stomachs. If the items had been there long enough, magic can infuse them and enchant them, but the enchantment is completely random, so there's no telling whether an item will have some incredible power, be essentially useless, or even suffer a dangerous curse. More interest, as I understood it, was gathering monster carcasses and just challenging oneself in order to grow stronger.

The other thing people forget is that the light novel of this was one of the original Isekai stories that really created the tropes that every other bargain bin show we've been getting lately saw as successful and adapted for themselves. The only reason the anime is as good as it is is because they did take their time and animate it and edit it so well cutting out the unnecessary bits from the book.

something i realize alot of people don't know, but mushoku tensai is the progenitor of the bog standard isekai formula. its what inspired all of the samey isekai and was the one that actually got this formula right. the harem elements, the world, the languages (which are actually complete languages with alphabets and the lot made specifically to expand said world) and the idea of a pathetic mc that grows to become someone respectable.

He works hard, studies, and eventually even becomes a good moral person and not just pervert trash. Mushoku Tensei is about growth, not just for the MC but even the side characters. The best way I can explain Mushoku Tensei is that it's not just another journey, and it's not just another isekai. The story of Mushoku Tensei is a life story. A life story that has journeys along the way. Life is not all sunshine and rainbows, shit happens and things go wrong. Nothing goes all according to plan and death is a real possibility. Mushoku Tensei never forgets this no matter how prepared the protagonists are. Many people refer to "the Mushoku Tensei effect" being the way the author writes characters. At every step of the way, each character has their own thoughts, perspectives, motivations, and more. This makes every single direct contributor a truly dynamic character that feels like a real person with complete autonomy over their actions. Everyone does things for reasons and they get explained at some point, making everything wrap up with a purpose. This also goes for things like Rudy being stripped and having cold water dumped on him. As an example, the beastfolk consider that to be the most humiliating punishment, and deemed his "crime" to be worthy of such punishment. There is also a canon and very valid reason as to why Vierra (the woman in the skimpy armor that accompanies Paul) wears so little to cover her body to provide another example. TL;DR Mushoku Tensei is not just another adventure, it's a life story, one that never forgets that life can fucking suck ass, and everything has a reason.

Having knowledge of your previous life is OP itself, especially since Mana can be very easily expanded training at birth. No normal child can probably start at the time Rudeus did since Rudeus was in full control of himself, unlike an ignorant baby, he exponentially increased his mana. That's like having a 10X Exp boost that no one got.

I know the pinned comment says you will give it a shot, but you definitely do need to. You mentioned how it has the tropes of isekai basically, which, i admit, it does, however it takes those tropes and makes an actual good story out of them, instead of making a bland copy/paste story (like most isekai). It isn't just "oh i picked up this girl, now she's with me forever and follows me everywhere i go." There is actual character development that feels natural and real, as well as actual relationships not just spawning overnight but blooming throughout months or years of the story. Each character in the story feels real, even the ones that you would think are just side characters. Plus the world building is done really good as well, as you seen with all the different races, villages, cultures, etc. Overall, this is hands down the best isekai anime, a solid 10/10 especially if you read the LN, but even the anime is adopted so well that reading the light novel isn't necessary to truly understand the story. So yeah, to you and anyone else reading this comment who may not have already watched it, WATCH IT, unless the perviness of Rudeus early on in the story (most of that is over with now in the anime with season 2 cour 1's completion, or at least the controversial aspect with his mental age) is enough to drive you away from the story as a whole, give it a shot, because most likely, it will become a top 3 isekai for you, if not your favorite isekai

Aside from horny fanservise, this story is very good, thanks to the massive character development! Not only Rudeus grows up as a person, but also every side character too! It's not portrayed too well in anime, since they can't display thoughts through anime, since alot of change happens in person' mind more than in action. Also, every average anime trope that we're used to in other anime is comming from this story, and it shows, cuz author implements them just right, not showing them into the plot "just cause", but having a good spot for them in the story and developing chara ters beyond simple "walking stereotype", unlike your average anime. "Man God" or "God of Man", since he's kinda human-like, not elf, orc or dragon, is actually a very interesting plot figure, and shown in the story not for MC's benefit, but to move the story and is quite central for its progression. I know it might feel like a broken record, but I heavily recommend READING it. Anine is great, but LN is way better with the amount of inportant details that been cut out. They may seem miniscule, but combined together are very hefty chunk of context lost.

It's that he's picked up the "unique skill" of chant-less casting, which greatly does up how fast he can do magic. His knowledge of basic science let's him visualize better spells and combine magic for more flexibility. By flexing his mana at age three is now like 100 times bigger than normal. So while theoretically possible for anyone, as seen by sylphie getting to be quite amazing by following the same guide, where he's at compared to others is quite superior. And sure he struggles against those better than him, you know the ten strongest known people to exist, but the fact that he's probably in the top 100 means he's very much quite strong. Like he hurt orstead which is supposed to be nigh impossible

Where he is in the anime right now, he is definitely OP. He didn’t start that way. He got there through strenuous training. Strangely, he seems to think himself no strong, presumably because he’s usually fought against the strong and lost to the much stronger. There was a recent episode where he won a duel so easily that he questioned whether using people like Paul and Eris as a gauge for an average strength level made sense. In the end, he intentionally limits himself. Rudy has cut loose a few times, and I’d like some more of that.

This show is a lot better with the context that aninews gives. A lot of the trauma or motives people have are not fully explained in the show. Even side character like "this woman has an avalanche coming off her" has a reason she dresses like that. Which to sum up very simply is to draw men's gazes towards her, and away from her sister. Since, her sister (who is basically covered in a blanket standing directly next to her) is extremely traumatized by men due to s3xually being used against her will for quite a time after being teleported in the mass teleport.

Mushoku Tensei is the originator of all the isekai tropes. You will find most of them, and especially when looking at the show in its broadest strokes (like in this compilation recap), it sounds liem just an ordinary isekai because of that. However, the story has a lot more subtlety to it, takes the common tropes in ways that arent the norm of today, has amazing worldbuilding, and has an amazing theme of learning to pick yourself up and keep trying to become better. It's something that modern isekai just dont have. Modern isekai are mostly about a power fantasy where the self-insert main character was traumatized in their previous life and gets a 2nd chance to do things over again, but the main characters just instantly take the opportunity to change who they are and become pillars of justice or charisma or hard work, usually with powers that make them the strongest person in the world. With mushoku tensei tho, while it is also focused on the trauma from a previous life and a 2nd chance, it does so in a more realistic way. The main character is gross and an awful person, and he doesnt stop being that the moment he has a 2nd chance in a new world. He is that same person in the beginning, and it takes time, years of developing relationships, going through hardships, making mistakes, and overall living life before he begins to slowly change over time to become a man who is respectable, humble, and takes responsibility for his actions. And while he is powerful, hes not the most powerful, with world-breaking powers that grant him the ability to manipulate the universe to his whim. In fact, basically all of the powers that he has been granted are ones that other people in the world also have. So its not an isekai where you are meant to insert yourself in the MC's shoes and pretend like youre in his scenario like with most isekai. Because he isnt the most powerful, and he starts with a terrible personality. The story is one of redemption for Rudy and the terrible person that he became in his terrible life, and one of learning to always strive to be better and keep pushing forward

You DO know that cousins are pretty much legal to marry, especially far related ones, even in this day and age, right? Genetics show issue only in near-related relationships, and the more consistent they are, the higher the chance. Rudeus and Iris are far related. Rudeus' father and Iris' father are in the same family, but they have different parents. So pretty far related. Paul is from a less wealthy branch than Iris' father that was born to a noble.

If Nux is sold on the recap he gonna be blown away by the actual anime. Recap was mistaken in parts and left out some key elements to choices made. It really is an amazing world building anime and there is often logic behind choices characters make in it.
