Redwing should offer a total blackout boot as an option, maybe they do. The finished product reminded me of Corcoran jump boots.

The teaching part is fascinating. As an old guy, I love to know how things are done right, no matter the industry. I wear boots, so YES, I like learning what RIGHT looks like. Your videos have really enlightened me a great deal. Nothing wrong with lifelong learning, even if it is not needed for your particular occupation. Turning work boots into dress boots turned out beautifully.

(And...his shop, is by far, the cleanest and tidiest, of all on KZbin. In my opinion, that is a tell-tale sign, of a cobbler who goes the extra mile to do everything the right way).

Great video. I'm curious why there still seems to be a substancial void after you glued in the cork. Does the entire cavity not need to be filled?
@WyattDadCobblerCompany
@WyattDadCobblerCompany Жыл бұрын
The void only appears to be there. When forcing the sides up during the removal of the original cork, it makes them appear taller. The important part of the void to fill is the height of the sidewall of the gimming. Our cork is exactly that thick. I talked about hammering that over after welting. But it doesn’t completely lay over until the soles are hammered on and the boot flexed during walking. If you put too much cork in the center of the boot, it will feel like a lump is under the ball of the foot and make the metatarsal heads sore.

Years ago I thought that all blackout stuff was a fad but I like it now. Why Redwing doesn't have this as an option is beyond me. I also appreciate the hand strength needed to pull all that cork and glue out of the boot. "Iron Pilot" isn't bad, but "Iron Eagle" is better because of the great '80s movie and the customer *is* a pilot. Learned that a welt just isn't a piece of leather; it's more sophisticated than I thought when it comes to stitching. Is there a benefit to cork board/sheet vs. the cork filler with the hot iron?
@WyattDadCobblerCompany
@WyattDadCobblerCompany Жыл бұрын
They all work the same in a new application. The reason we don’t use hot cork in the repair world is because the footbed has been molded to the foot and sometimes beyond due to excessive abuse. Hot cork just molds around stuff instead of putting it back where it belongs.
@klausbecker4745

In one of the comments you mentioned that hot cork is terrible for repair work. Can you elaborate on this? Caught my attention as well that you didn’t go back with it, but it sounds like you have your reasons based on experience.
@WyattDadCobblerCompany
@WyattDadCobblerCompany 11 ай бұрын
The explanation probably got edited out due to some problem with the filming. I will try to cover it with illustrations in another video in the future. When a boot is being made, everything is perfectly symmetrical as it should be. Once it has been worn, places have been stretched and shifted. Hot cork flows and allows for the bad places to remain. Sheet cork is an exact thickness made to match the void caused by the gimming. It will push against the misshaped area and cause it to line back up to the proper thickness.

@wyattdadcobblercompany , regarding Iron Rangers, is there a resole you offer/ recommend that can get them close to feeling like the Red Wing #607 (soft toe) Supersole 2.0 workboot, but more durable? I like the shock absorption of the Supersole’s but much prefer the fit and look of the Iron Rangers. Thank you kindly!!
@WyattDadCobblerCompany
@WyattDadCobblerCompany 9 ай бұрын
Not really. The perk of the supper sole is that it does both, shock absorption and durability. Most rubber soles are not as durable and definitely don’t have the cushion properties. However, there are soles that we build that supports your feet better and that also takes the shock away. This build is a good example of that. Adding the proper midsole for your weight and usage makes a huge difference in these boots.

@shakebake2680 9 ай бұрын
@@WyattDadCobblerCompany thank you!! I love the work you’ve done with the Black Out and all your other work as well. I ask because it seems (from many reviews) that the Super Sole 2.0 outer soles crumble (hydrolization) within a year or so. Which would leave me having to get them resoled and RedWing are the only ones that can replace them with more Super Soles but the turnaround is about 3 months. And they might be too much boot for me in the sense that I don’t work in the trades. I’d use them for standing and walking in varied terrain (mainly pavement) for 8-10 hours a day. Working weddings where you have to wear all black. With the Iron Rangers I would definitely use an Insole with arch support. And lug soles like the Vibram 100’s look to be beneficial. I’d like to make the proper investment for my needs. And am so blown away with your work that if we can get them somewhere in the ballpark of all day comfort, I’d rather get the IR’s and send them your way!! Would you add a double midsole or a single would do?Thank you Gents!!

@@shakebake2680 we wear Iron Rangers and stand all day in them. The midsole and a good arch support is far better for you than the supersole in the type use you just described. Midsole is determined by weight for this type use: up to 185lbs, get the standard leather midsole. 185-230lbs get the thick leather midsole. 230 and up get the double midsole
