I can also tell you from experience that that type off fake leather (i've seen it literally hundreds off times) literally falls apart with age. It's enough to put some pressure on it with your thumbnail and it peels right off. I'm not sure why it gets so fragile with age, but it does. With rain and stress my guess would be that that sole would fall off within a maximum of 3 months of daily use.

I'm glad you mentioned the environmental issues with buying multiples of the cheaper version. I know that price is a massive factor (especially during all this uncertainty) but personally, I'd rather save up for the quality of the original version than have to resort to quantity with the cheaper version. Plus, copying is kinda lazy. If I'm gonna buy something at a lower price point, I'd prefer that it wasn't trying to look like something else. Great video as usual, Wes.

Really nice breakdown of the difference btw EVA and PU and TPU. I would add some things I have been a cobbler and PU retains its elasticity much better than EVA, but will begin to break down and decompose sometimes after 3-4 years regardless of wear, where even a flattened EVA sole will remain in one piece and be wearable for decades. It is also worth mentioning that all EVA is not created equal. There is every quality of EVA, same as with rubber. Finally, the PU and the TPU both harden significantly in cold temperatures, making them much more slippery on wet and icy conditions. I’ve been a cobbler and a shoemaker for about 10 years, and I’ve ripped open everything from Aldo to Alden, although I am usually more careful than you are since my customers always wanted their shoes back.

Please do UGG! I have noticed the Decker UGGs aren’t what they used to be, and certain other brands are better. UGG Since 1974 are the best, IMO. It is my believe the Original Ugg Boots Australia is at least as good as Decker’s UGGs. Original UGG Boots Australia is less expensive than Decker, even with shipping from Australia to the US, in my case. There are a lot of different rug brands and there is no actual authentic UGG vs. inauthentic, despite Decker’s claim (except that it should have real double faced sheepskin which Decker often doesn’t), so it would be very beneficial!

Clark's actually make some pretty decent Chelsea boots. They have some in the $60 price range that are okay, but with a little bit of work you can find their higher end ones in the $120 range on sale with full grain leather uppers, leather and fabric lined, a removeable footbed, and leather/crepe soles. I had a pair of clark's chelseas. Got them on deep clearance, I probably wouldn't do it again because the leather uppers didn't last long but while they were good they were handsome and got a lot of compliments. One thing you could mention in these comparisons is the ethical considerations. I don't know how Blundstone treats their factory workers in Asia and Mexico, but I can guarantee you that no one is being paid a fair wage making a boot that costs $20 shipped to the store.
@good1day7262 жыл бұрын
this, definitely. likely tied into why they factories went overseas in the first place. and we get to have 20 knock-off versions of a popular (and quality - long-lasting) boot. then consumers - or people turned into consumers - were convinced that yes, they wanted 20 version of cheap stuff. then these now 'consumers' were also convinced that it was their idea, as one can hear in soundbites shaming the consumer for driving the market, forcing corps to go overseas. it didn't happen like this.

I have both Blundstones and RedBacks, and while the Blunnies fit me tighter (and I had to put in an aftermarket footbed to get a better arch) they are more comfortable than the RedBacks. The RedBacks have a protrusion on the inside of the boot, right on the top part of the instep, where some seams come together. It rubs a spot of irritation after a day's wearing. Yet, the footbed on the RedBacks has a great arch and it didn't need to be replaced. I'm a bit of a shoe nut, so I don't mind paying for something good. It seems like no company can ever get a boot right for me... except RedWing. Gosh, RedWings are lovely once they are broken in.

When I enlisted inthe USMC back in 86' I was issued 2 pairs of vietnam era full leather boots made in 1968 & 1970 respectively and one pair of canvas/leather "jungle" boots marked 1966 "Spike protection". The jungle boots were never worn, One pair of full leathers was for inspections while the other was used for duty after boot camp (Plt 1070, 1069 series) Once out of boot camp and in the FMF, the jungle boots became my favorite, so much so I wore them out to the point where the sole broke in half. I took them to my local cobbler out side of camp Casey, Korea. It was the first time I got to see the guys of my favorite boot when he pulled the sole off. It was made like this: sole, 2/3 metal plate, double cork layer, felt,leather and had a hard mesh insert that could be taken out. I was wondering if there are any commerical boots that you have come across that were similar. I compair them to my last pair of of "desert" boots I was issued and there is no comparison to my original issue ones from the 60s.

i used to buy Kohl's specials for Men's dress shoes. These shoes were a small step up from the Camden's. I noticed several draw backs when buying these cheap dress shoes. First cosmetically they don't wear well, with a few months of wear and tear they really start to look bad, and cleaning and a shine will not bring them back as they are synthetic uppers. Second they get less comfortable over time, because the material wears down quickly and stretches out. Third is cheap shoes have cheap soles and lining, which cause smelly shoes quickly, even if i rotated with other pairs. High Quality dress shoes used with a tree shoe takes years to get bad odors because of the high quality sole and leather lining inside the shoe. Thanks for the video!

Maybe you already said this but how do you like that knife for leather work? Is it your “go to” knife of choice for your regular job or do you like it just for cutting into the shoes? Maybe some afíliate links in the video description would help out a little, just a thought. Thanks for your videos and stay safe. Jason

The soles of my Blundstones crumbled to bits after a couple of months. I looked on the internet and found that it had happened to hundreds of other people. Blundstone denied there was a problem and blamed the customers. A lot of long term Blundstone customers, including me, switched to Redback boots. Don't buy Blundstones.

@@YouSurfin the key words are "Work Boots" they go in mud, water, oil they get scraped in the ground they have things dropped on them, the soles wear out. 2 years is a miracle.

As the Blundstones wear they’re going to look cooler every year. I agree. Less plastic shit in the landfill is a good thing

Blunstones were once really well made, but since 2007 this iconic brand moved their manufacturing from Australia to Thailand and India. With that, the quality standard plummeted, so today they really only survive on their name. I personally would never, ever, buy Blundstones again because their boots fall apart after a few years.

I bought Blundstones & didn’t wear the for nearly 3 years. I dud them out of the closet & the sole had disintegrated into globs and they weren’t wearable. I sent them off to a guy who specializes in resolving Blundstones & he did a great job. My friends had the same problem with their Blundstones. I bought Rossi’s made in Australia, look almost identical but much better made. You should put a pair of Blundstones on the shelf for a couple of years & then look at them. They will be a gooey globby mess. No more Blundstones. BTW what kind of blade is on your saw? Be safe. 👍☮️🌞🦠😷🥾

Camden Rock boots are made by Eastland Shoes that are based in Maine, and they have been making shoes since 1955. Eastland is an American heritage shoemaker that also assemble some of their shoes in the USA. This Camden Rock Marshall boot is $5.99 at Wal-Mart now, but it's all sold out.

I just got these in the mail a week ago. I was going to tell you about them lol. It’s like you’re a mind reader! I can’t believe these have steel shanks for $20. They don’t even say on the listing that they gave shanks. Even with the synthetic upper they’re my backup rain boots. At least when these fall apart I still have my blundstones.

Good comparison. I'm a believer in you get what you pay for, but I also look for a good deal. Good quality for a lower price is good, cheap quality for cheap not so good.

@AnimeReference4 жыл бұрын
My biggest critique of the cheaper boots is the shape/texture on the top side of the out sole. I've had a pair of boots like that, and it doesn't take long before a leather mid sole will stretch/crack and the inside of your shoe will take that shape. It's super uncomfortable. That and the possibility of a honeycombed heel stack make me prefer leather soles with glued on rubber protectors.

I’ve only bought shoes from Walmart once. Very cute looking, but after only wearing them a few times, there was a really bad foot odor which never usually happens with me. Not sure if it was because of the cardboard they use or what, but I promptly threw them out.
