Awesome video! I actually just restored/complete tear down of a family member's 1985 Evinrude 4HP twin cyl outboard. It started with needing a new water pump, after sitting for over 10 years. That engine has no tell-tale pee-hole. It discharges the return water out with the exhaust - which means there was and is, no real way to tell if it's pumping and circulating through the entire block. Mine wasn't... After stripping the block, removing all covers and even the head, I found a clogged cooling hole/passage and cleared the blockage. Probably 20+ hours of labor into it, lol. It also has the 100:1 oil sticker on it!! I had no idea they did a recall on this, and that it should have been 50:1!!! I scratched my head on this and had already told my family member to run 50:1, even without knowing this. I told her to just keep a few spare plugs on hand. Of course, she didn't... I would love to share the photos and videos I took, if you want to see them.

Wowza! That is a rare find! I'm glad it ended up in the right hands. Most would have just throw that on a boat and destroyed it. I almost wanted to see you take it a part and see what it looks inside with zero hours, but then again there would be nothing to see.

No boredom on my part. I’m very happy to watch your outboard videos. Ask your self if you had an outboard that needed some quality work preformed would you choose this guy or Jimmy Bob. My choice is this guy. My father taught me about always running the gas out of any outboard and I too tell those with 100/1 stickers to run TCWC 3 always at 50/1.

Thank you Sir for all the good info. I appreciate it. One thing I would have done, which you may have, I would have changed all the fuel lines. I rebuilt my carbs on a 85 model 88 Special, I did not replace the fuel hoses and therefore had to pull the carbs back off and clean them and found bits of rubber hose, then I replace all fuel hoses and all was well. The new gas formulas are diff now a days. Same as you, I run the motors out of fuel each time before storing. All is well when you need it. Thanks again Sir, great video on an old relic. I am sure she will do just fine.

I heard from an Johnson/Evinrude dealer that the 100:1 was OK to run but the problem came about when the outboards sat for a long period of time - the cylinders would rust due to the lean mix so they went back to 50:1.

Thanks for sharing your inside informations! I recently re-activated a Volvo-Penta 140 (about 12hp) outboard motor, which my father bought somewhen in the 70s or early 80s. Very similar technology. After almost 25 years of storage we replaced both water-pumps (engine coolant pump and boat drain pump) and the sucction-driven fuel-pump membrane. And now its running again - generating the same fun to my children as it did one generation ago in my childhood to our family. I am curious , if todays technology will still be usable in 35 years - thinking about electronic spare parts availability ...

I look forward to the break in video. Wondering what fuel/oil ratio you ran it on in this first start ever video? I have never had a new outboard so not sure about that stuff. 1987, eh? Interesting as well. I have a 1984 15hp, and found that it runs and especially idles a LOT better once I discovered it was supposed to run 100:1 and am running it at that. Apparently the idle mixture adjustment has been deleted on this year, is there something else I can do to let it idle better if I go to 50:1? Thanks.

Many years ago, I joined the AOMC, and after a few meets found a brand new 1954 Mercury 40 hp. The guy had it in its original box and was not quite ready to part with it. Called him twice a year just to keep my foot in the door, but after 10 years I gave up. He claimed he wanted to sell it and get some vacation money, but I think he was just a hoarder.

My one needed a new waterpump and housing, driveshaft needed a good clean and grease and I also put a new thermostat in it. Really pleased with mine. Anyone know the difference between the 5hp and the higher horse power ones. Power head looks identical.
