Nice thoughts there, Drew... I used my D40 with 121000 images taken, and a Helios 44M to take some images of dew dropped dandelions, at F2. A long time friend asked me what I used to get the "absolutely brilliant" images, and I laughed and told him it was a 6 mega-pixel Nikon almost 20 years old and a manual lens made when I was a few years old. He still does not believe me. I told him that the tools are merely tools, and only do what we tell them to do. The newer better bigger more mentality is sad... Drew, keep up the good work, and may your pockets always be financially blessed, 'cause you are HAVING FUN, as Samuel l Jackson might say..

Thanks Stuart - and sorry for the late reply, all the comments across the channel drown me sometimes. Yeah, see the D40 - just as with many older dslr's - have a distinctive look in my opinion. Add a magic lens like a Helios, then add a photographer with real vision - and the results just pop. Thanks again brother. Drew

Your video about the Nikon D7100 inspired me, as I was in a period where I was looking for a camera. I found one at a decent price, and since then, I've been carrying it with me whenever I have the opportunity. I've captured some beautiful shots.
@loneshootr Жыл бұрын
That is so good to hear. I'd be happy to still be using my old D7100 - just a shame the lockdowns forced me to sell all my other gear. The only reason I still have this 7D is because it's too beat up to sell!
@poparomeo6965 Жыл бұрын
I initially searched for a Canon 7D, but in my area, they were either priced too high or heavily used (over 500,000 shutter actuations), so I ended up with a Nikon D7100 after some research. Very inspiring clips. And your photos are superb. With respect.

The knowledge and experience you have makes all the difference. I bet i could use a high spec top drawer camera and the results be no where near as good as those you shoot. I would love to see how you create the dreamy painterly images in one of your videos. Some beautiful pictures there as always.

In my country we say 'In the hands of an expert every gun is lethal' . Btw, sometimes I use Auto-Exposure Bracketing when the subject is still, although I did use it on moving ones as well.
@loneshootr Жыл бұрын
Yeah that can work well for sure. I've tried many different ways of using the 7d - the issue that challenges me most is shooting fast moving horses across a beach where the light is changing as they move east to west into the sun, and I've got comfortable now in manual and riding the dials between shots. For general photography or under controlled lighting I find the 7d to be very efficient really.

I use my 7D in raw mode, it gives me all the dynamic range I need? Though I am tempted by the 7D mk 2 for the better low light performance, having said that with the right lens the 7D does the job okay. And I actually prefer the feel and look of the 7D over the 7D Mk2, don't like that lump on the Pop up flash, think it houses the GPS tech stuff (what do I want GPS for on a camera? I use it make images not for navigation?) makes it look ugly and overly bulky.

I don't know if you're still following comments but here goes. Ever since your videos on older DSLRs I've been grabbing older Nikons. My first was a $50 USD, 6425 click D40x with CCD sensor. It knocks out beautiful Kodachrome like images. Next I found a mint, 16799 click D7200 for $299. I found some older lenses for as little as $20 and the set is producing professional level images. It may not be 47mpxl, $6000 camera but the results are damn good. Thanks for the advice, maybe there is a vintage camera channel waiting for you! I hope this finds you well. Good luck, Tim.

Hands down, some of the best videos I’ve seen no nonsense approach 🙌🏻 quick question, I’m on a budget, I’ve got a LUMIX S5, adore it, but bought a 7D with a 70-200 L USM (no is) as a back up, I cannot get low on that iso and it is punishing me, any ideas? Should I sell them and try to get a different set up? Budget is £400 max…..any advice would be so appreciated please
@loneshootr Жыл бұрын
Thank you kindly. Yeah, I'll admit that I had trouble with a 70-200 f/4L unstabilized - changed it for an EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. Dirt cheap lens with unbelievably effective stabilization, and I've used it ever since even on pro equine shoots. Dull days, fast action, no problem. It's sharp wide open, well stabilized, super cheap, and fast focus on a 7D. Hope this helps. Drew *Edit: On an overcast day shooting galloping horses at 1250th/sec shutter, f/5.6 at 250mm (400mm FF equiv.) my ISO sits at 200 using the EF-S lens described above.

If you have photoshop and you shoot in raw you can run a denoise tool and it works unbelievably well. I've used it on images that were so noisy out of camera that they seemed totally useless until I denoised them in camera raw. Give it a try. I'm a person who when I teach a workshop tell people, "Your camera is not a tool, it's much more than that in the hands of a good photographer. A tool is something you work with; a camera is something you love to have around you and with you all the time--there's a huge difference." You, being a musician, will understand this, "a musician always says, I'm going to play music, not work music." When you pick up your camera the philosophy should be the same.
@loneshootr Жыл бұрын
Yes indeed the denoise Ai is effective for sure. I use it if I absolutely have to, but very rarely because my ol' computer takes forever to render them out. And yes, I agree. It's the same with music, all creative pursuits I suppose. Never lose the connection with what drove us to start in the first place. Thanks my friend, Drew

Where's the love for your Nikon D7200? 😂 I know camera bodies, these days, doesn't matter so much, but I am curious as to why you left it behind after a really nice video about it?
@loneshootr Жыл бұрын
D7100... great camera but it let me down on a paid shoot. I used to have a D800E hanging on a wrist strap and the D7100 on a shoulder strap - fast changes between the two cameras - one wide one tele. Strap stud pulled straight out of the body on the D7100, leaving me juggling two cameras while trying to get shots of seven galloping horses for an hour... Turns out the strap mounts only go into the body - not the chassis. The love died that day 😂

I really like the 7d I got a few months ago as a beginner. I use it mostly with an EF 18-135 IS USM + Macro. I'd really appreciate if someone could explain why, when in full manual mode, it often takes pics at settings other than what I set it at! Mostly (or all?.....now that I think about it) involving time adjustments. Like I'll set it at 1/250, then it takes at 1/350. That aspect is super annoying.
@ray.watts.44Ай бұрын
Did you ever figure that out? I've had a 7D for 10 years and its never done that. In manual it shoots according to the shutter and aperture settings that you select.
