I would use it for busking but not for practice. I've seen good reviews for Mendini and Eastar flutes; they sell open-holed flutes at $120US or less--$70 to $80 for closed-holed ones-all on Amazon. Good video.

its not really a fair comparison . The Mura is like anywhere from $2 - 10,000 .It can`t be expected to be anywhere near as good as the Mura. I think given the MASSIVE price difference it held up pretty well , yes you have to force air through it like crazy , but , if you learn to do it on that , when you can get your hands on a nice flute , its going to be a million times easier to play . Sometimes "learning the hard way" is good . Not only that , if you aren`t sure if the flute is for you or not , its a perfect way to " have a go" so to speak .

I would have killed for this flute when I was a kid; instead, I had to wait until I had $500 for a used "real" instrument, and it was definitely more off-putting than the "Slade" (yes, this very flute) that I got last year almost as a joke.

It's very sad to me that the instruments most likely to attract someone curious to try to learn to play, those being the least expensive, and therefore the least financially risky, are also always the most frustrating, the most difficult to actually play. How many novices have been completely turned off of learning the flute, or the bass guitar, or the saxophone, because they bought something practically unplayable for someone with their skill, and they just don't realize it. It's ironic that there would probably be more music, more musicians in the world, if these sorts of instruments simply didn't exist.

I know right? Only rich kids should be allowed to play an instrument. And it should be a *perfect* instrument, lest they be completely turned off by a less-than-perfect sound. Or, God forbid, crushed by the unclean task of actually learn how to deal with life. Like, tuning their own instruments O_O I'm not sure of how it works in the classical world; we commoners just try to play anything that makes a sound. If a $60 flute had existed when I was a kid, I'd have started playing it 10 years sooner. Luckily, there was a classical guitar in my grandpa's basement, with 5 metal strings, a broken peg and a few cracks.
@DriveCarToBar
@DriveCarToBar 4 жыл бұрын
@@IlBiggo it doesn't have to be perfect but it does need to be serviceable. A guitar is a little easier than a wind instrument in terms of making repairs and getting it set up. But first, you have to be able to identify problems and have the ability to fix them. That's not generally a skill a new player possesses and wind instruments have a steeper learning curve than a guitar.

My mom wants me to teach her flute and was looking at Amazon for flutes, she said there were a lot of flutes for less than $100. I told her she's be better off renting one, or using my old Di Zhao than using a cheap knockoff flute. I explained to her how frustrating it is for a professional, as witnessed here. If it's frustrating and challenging for a professional, imagine how frustrating it is for a beginner.

I'd say it's much better renting an instrument, when you start new than buying a cheap one. So you get a good quality instrument for practice but you could still change your mind. My parents rented all our instruments until we played them for two years and were fully committed. I bought my flute from my own savings when I turned 18 and I still play it.
@IlBiggo
@IlBiggo 4 жыл бұрын
Totally second this. Sadly, renting wasn't an option "in my days", so I support the idea of an instrument cheap enough for a kid to try it out. This flute is not as bad as you'd think; of course, if you're used to a $30K instrument you'll be unimpressed, to say the least .-D, but for a beginner it's more than adequate.

Hey! I saw in the vid you were wondering why the cheap flutes you've got have plastic under some of the keys when you open it. The plastic under the keys is to protect them in transit so that they don't get bent out of shape/the pads don't get damaged - with better woodwind instruments cork not plastic is used and most shops/sellers would remove it before you try the instruments so you don't see it that often when buying pro instruments. As a violinist myself, I enjoyed your excerpt from the Beethoven piece. You are a beautiful flutist in every sense of the word. I was for many years a classical music radio presenter in Houston, and one of the things I was instructed my first day on the job was never say "flautist" (or "PEE-uh-nist"). I don't think your Wish flute sounded bad at all, but I couldn't really sense how difficult it was for you to play.

I got a flute from Wish (not used, brand new but it was on Wish so...trust issues at first😂) and it plays really well, I've had it for about 2 years. It actually wasn't that cheap, it cost a bit of money but I've been playing flute for about 4 years. My band director said it sounded pretty good, it hasn't had any key/pad problems (except for a screw that was loose, once). It came with the whole set! Gloves, cleaning supplies, and a tiny screw driver thing (sorry to the tool experts💀). I originally was playing the school's flute and had to eventually buy my own.

IIRC, the thinking behind key clamps (they say) is to prevent shipping damage. I personally think it has more to do with forcing the pads to form a seal, which can be effective only to an extent. Generally, it is considered poor practice by techs because pad felt can only be forced to compress so much before it re-expands when pressure is relieved.

The little things you removed from the flute in the beginning are placed there to keep the keys closed. Its a technique that is used often in shipping instruments. That only really works if there is good seals to begin with.

Just stumble across this video and I am amazed at your incredible skill- I believe you could coax beautiful sounds from a soda bottle! BTW, the gentleman in the photo is the world famous Lord Flatus the Flatulent Flautist, renowned for his ability to accompany his bass notes with his disciplined bodily sounds! Actually I was once a p;layer of NA flutes, shakuhachi and typical transverse bamboo flute, but never the silver flute. My current lung conditions no longer allow this but I can still admire such perfection as you display. All best wishes.

I’m still amazed at the sound you got from the wish flute - your flute sounds amazing in comparison still. Just goes to show - put a good flautist behind a bad flute and they will play well still. But I can imagine how frustrating trying to play that flute would be for someone less good!
