The rusted 'exhaust tube' is actually a heat duct. The exhaust goes through a heat exchanger that takes heat from the exhaust and sends it up into the cab for the heater and defroster. The engine cooling fan blows the air through the heat exchanger into the heat duct. Very poor heater. I had '63, '71, and '77 buses, and the stock heat was very inadequate, especially for Wyoming! I agree, a Subaru engine gives power and water heat/defrost.

Much loved little campers, got into almost every corner of the world, the Aussies used to come to Europe and buy one, fix it up and drive Europe and the UK then head for Africa ! Noisy, Cold, Primitive and eminently Fixable, you can get parts everywhere !
