Little trick for backing up trailers. Put your hands on the bottom of the steering wheel. Then if you want the trailer to go left, you move your hands left like usual. Takes the reversing direction out of it. Sick project. I'm thankful you share it with everyone.
@pkt1213 Жыл бұрын
I always taught people, when trying to back straight, if you see more trailer in one mirror more than the other, turn the wheel in that direction a bit.
@chrisbartlett6022 Жыл бұрын
@@pkt1213 ditto, you sort of "push" the trailer out of that mirror till you see it in the other and "push" it back. Obviously getting it right is a bit more complicated, unless like my Brother who is dyslexic and just stops thinking about what he is doing and automatically does things back to front. Of course both above suggestions work.
@JustinJoyinglife Жыл бұрын
I learned that trick on a farm I worked on. It's helpful because it takes the thought process of flipping directions out of it. And can be modified easily. For instance, if you're backing up doubles (two trailers) your hand goes back to the top and the direction you turn is the direction the rear trailer will go. Still takes practice to nail, but it's a cheat code for starting out. And mirrors are super important. Especially for low trailers or trailers you can't see out of the rear. But I didn't mention that because I figured it was a given lol.
@chrisbartlett6022 Жыл бұрын
@@JustinJoyinglife indeed, horses for courses, some things work better for some than others. I had to be in the zone to reverse doubles, or a trailer with a drawbar axle. I had a Land Rover with an off set front tow ball on the bumper, sometimes it was worth the added time to turn the landy round and push the trailer along. Of course wouldn't it be good to be able to hitch the trailer to the rear axle (or rather above it) like with a 5th wheel

Hey Alex, the best way to back up a trailer is to put a tape on the 6 o'clock of your steering wheel. After that you turn the tape in the direction you need the trailer to go. In effect, it will be the opposite of what you do when you back up your vehicle without a trailer. The tape in the 6 o'clock position is a seamless way to remember. Give it a try!

Tips to backing up a trailer…… rest your right hand on the bottom of the steering wheel. Don’t move your hand from the spot. If you wish the back of the trailer to go to the left, take your hand that is on the steering wheel at the bottom and move it to the left. Vice versa for the right your hand to the right back of the trailer goes to the right.

When you lifted the louver it hit the stainless T panel on the roof because the underlying roof box structure that is glued to the fiberglass underbody has started to come unglued. You need to re-secure the roof box to the fiberglass with some screws or bolts, and the louver will no longer hit. Common issue and not too difficult to repair, but you need to unload the torsion bars for the doors to do it, which can be tricky if you have never done it. Would highly recommend having DMCMW perform this procedure.

Alex, on the oil pressure question: In January I supercharged my H2, it always had oil pressure similar to yours; Within acceptable spec by GM, but certainly lower than ideal and personally uncomfortable to me. Come so find out it's definitely an LQ4/LQ9 iron block 6.0 characteristic. I also live in Phoenix, so the excessive heat makes it even worse. When doing the blower setup, I pulled the engine for a quick and dirty refresh, and went back together with a Melling high volume pump with the strongest spring. I now cold start at 80psi, hot idle at 50, and hot cruise at about 70. Much happier and much more margin for error. Definitely recommend doing this sooner than later. I also get 8.6mpg highway. LOL

Amazing find. You are a lucky man. I’m an ex truck driver, so let me give you a tip on trailering. It’ll help. Put you hand on the bottom of your steering wheel. Whichever way you want your trailer to go, move your hand ( and the bottom of the wheel) in that direction. And you need surprisingly little movement, and want to ‘float’ the trailer - little movements on the wheel and just let the trailer float in the right direction. Big movements will get you all catty wampus. Can’t wait to see more of your incredible journey with this car. Good luck. 👍

When I first got my learners permit, my dad delivered a lot of rv’s, campers, and conversion vans out of the Middlebury, IN area. It was during the return runs where I got my early driving experience in an ‘88 F350 crew cab dually with a 460-V8 and 5spd pulling an empty gooseneck trailer long enough to hold 2 LWB extended F150 conversion vans. It was huge. Here’s my point, he taught me the easiest way to back a trailer, and I assure you it will help you. While backing, you need to do three things: (1) back slowly, don’t rush, (2) hold the steering wheel at the top and watch your mirrors, when trying to straighten up turn towards the mirror in which you see the trailer, (3) and finally, especially when backing a bumper or hitch pulled trailer continue to hold the wheel at the noon position and make small inputs/corrections. Usually 90* is enough, you may need to turn nearly 180*, however the trailer will come about very quickly, even if you are just crawling. If you keep ahold of the wheel at the top position (with the wheels printed straight ahead) you can go 90 or more either way and always find the straight ahead position quickly to move straight back. It sounds a little strange, but go find a large empty parking lot with lines or cones and practice. Try what I’ve said, you’ll be shocked how quickly you’ll improve. As a professional driver with a CDL, I feel I should say this as well…if possible always set yourself up so that you are backing in an arc to your left, or as it’s known ‘sight-side backing.’ Blind-side backing is more difficult and it is much harder to confidently place the right side of your vehicle.

Those straps around the handles actually are factory, the early Delorean models simply had straps wrapped around the door handles while in the later models the straps were made to have their own fixed place in the door near to the handle. Also just note that the automatic Deloreans are actually rarer than the manuals, since out of the 9000 built only 1000 were automatic, so who knows how many are left now. Also side note for when you start the engine, check all the fuel lines as since they are all most likely original they’ll be made of rubber and probably damaged and cracked at this point, so I would highly recommend replacing them before you try and start the engine. Really happy for you guys since you found an absolute icon!

I've been restoring a friend's DeLorean, VIN 1053 and yeah, you're probably going to put $20K-$30K into this to get it sorted. These are some of the most difficult and annoying cars to work on. You should consider just spending the money and upgrading things as you go along, the suspension design by Lotus is absolutely horrendous. KW coilovers are probably worth the premium over the stock shocks as I completely redid the suspension with stock shocks and it rides like crap still. You should definitely upgrade the brakes.
@stuartd9741 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info interesting. Why is the suspension horrendous if it was designed by Lotus? Unless you mean in the sense everything rusts together...
@EdwardM104 Жыл бұрын
@@stuartd9741 it's very similar to the design of the Eclat and the early Esprit. Lotus updated the design in the Esprit but the DeLorean was never updated. A couple of videos that show what's going on with the worst offender, the front suspension: watch?v=jiJ4sDiurdI (video called 'DeLorean LCA, FEA Analysis (a work in progress)') and watch?v=CMHO4Aydk04 (video called 'DeLorean LCA Flex') The lower control arms are thin sheet metal and not boxed at all no real reinforcements at all, they love to crack because of the excessive movement. The sway bar is also very soft metal, not a proper spring steel, and doesn't do well to triangulate the movement of the lower control arm. The rear suspension also has issues related to the pivot bolt of the trailing arm bending or shearing off. The original bolts were low grade and not well suited to the task, but it was also a poor design. Unlike most high load suspension bolts, the bolt is only located by a bracket on one side, not both, causing significant shear force and bending moment to be applied to the bolt. This is mostly solved with better grade bolts, some people also use Inconel bolts for this and seemingly have zero failures but those bolts are $$$$. DeLoreans seem to have more issues with these suspension designs than the Lotus cars but I've seen similar complaints from owners of early Esprits, never seen a Eclat to be honest.

Episodes 65 --> George is repairing the chassis even making jigs for the sheet steel. ... It's clear watching this restoration how cheap & poorly made the Lotus was. And Chapman's ethos of lightness clearly shows on the chassis construction. No internal gussets in the central spine..?? ... In episode 73 he rebuilds/repairs the spring turrets, .. And the last Lotus episode (19/19) [2nd to last video] he's making the rear trailing arms out of stainless steel..from scratch. Which is an odd choice as SS work hardens become brittle.. Worth a look. Also his videos are stop gap animation videos. Phenomal. .. I Wil check out those inks Thanks.

Nice!!!! Always liked the DeLorean 👍🏼👌 Yes, on 1981 there were cassettes but also 8 track were still available 😁 DeAleorean😁👌 The 4Life are vitamins stuff

The orignal owner switched the radio to the later model that was installed in the Deloreans....because the early radios had a tendency to break the electronic ribbon that was on the cassette door that showed the digital LED channels.

Thanks for making that little girl happy. It is a project, but you will do it justice, slow and steady. I'm sure there are some clubs out there that can help out with parts.

Think we are a similar age and a DeLorean is a total bucket list car for me .. obviously because of Back to the Future. I will be following this series like a hawk. Congratulations Alex.. I'm really glad for you that you're really living the dream. Thanks for the great content! I'll never own one myself but at least a series like this will give me half a feeling of what it must be like :-)

I'm so happy I found this video (I came from the second episode), this is a real journey to restore the DeLorean! Fantastic story and you really got lucky with the state of the frame and components (minus a brake calliper 😂) You're living a lot of people's dreams right now dude, I hope you enjoy it and I'll be watching the rest of the series for sure! Cheers from the UK 🇬🇧

Congratulations I owned one for 20 years, you have An Early Model like mine! The front trunk FILLER Flap was only in the early production models like yours and mine!!! They went to solid front hood with the two indentation grooves then they did away with those also. Be very careful with fuel system and tank goo, there's an upgrade electric fuel up, cost a little more but go that way and save money! IMPORTANT after filling new antifreeze you must bleed out the air, radiator in front expansion antifreeze chamber in the back, bleed or will overheat and blow lines! Best of luck. Oh parts from Delorean One are available, the current owner of the moniker I think. New Old Stock, DECALS for engine compartment for your restoration. Do NOT adjust the doors, just get new struts from them the torsion bars in the doors that do most of the lifting are CRYOGENICALLY processed and your spare tire is marked AEROSPACE!! HAVE FUN DINT GUESS FOR RESTORATION! Ask Delorean Ine. I know Lots About the Delorean, please feel free to ask anything anytime. Have Fun! I Have an original large SERVICE MANUAL I bought from a guy that worked at a Delorean dealership if you want it!!! Shows everything!!!😮

Hi Alex, If you want to convert it to a manual gearbox look for one out of a Renault Alpine GTA (pronounced "ALPEEN"). Not sure if there is a difference between the gearboxes in the turbo and non turbo models. You should be able to modify the gear selector rod to suit the DMC. First place to look for a box and selector rod would be in the UK, plenty of them being wrecked there. Pedals would be different as the GTA ones come up from the floor like an old VW. I have a Alpine GTA here in Australia, so same PRV engine and Renault box. Looking forward to the build.

Delorean frames differ where the shifters go....so unless you do some re engineering...it's a NO GO to convert from a auto to a manual on a Delorean.

My 2000 C5 M6 LS1 with 128K miles idles at 26-28 PSI at hot idle. At around 1800-2000 RPM going around 65-70 I get 36-40 PSI. For your 6L, 15 PSI is well within specification(8 PSI is the minimum I believe) but I would suspect you have some bearing wear or seal leaks. Old oil can also drop your PSI quite a bit, so if you are due for an oil change definitely perform that before inspecting your bearings.

Little hint when backing with the trailer: SMALL turns on the steering wheel! Also, grip the steering wheel on the BOTTOM and which ever direction you want the trailer to move turn the steering wheel in that direction. So cool you found your 'dream car' Guess I need to subscribe and see how this turns out! Nice! :)

It’s quite possible you got pulled over the first time for drug interdiction reasons and they just used the loud exhaust as a reason to pull you over and check you out. If you think about it a nondescript van makes for a good target as a probable smuggling vehicle coupled with the fact that you have Illinois plates and Chicago is one of the nations major hubs for the narcotics trade you might have piqued his interest.

HUGE Back to the Future fan! Have been since they came out. I gave up the dream to own a Delorean when I was at a comic con and tried to fit this 6-6 300lb body into one. Yeah, old man grunts trying to get back up lol. I will just dream from a distance now. Happy for you Alex for sure! Love your channel!

2007 NBS 3500HD 6.0 ~35psi hot cruise ~25psi hot idle. 2004 6.0 ~40PSI hot idle and cruise. ~18PSI is fine as per the service manual, but in my experience signals the dreaded "oil pressure bug" THings to check- First use a mechanical oil gauge to rule out a problem with the cluster or sender, then; bar bell re-stricter, oil galley plugs, cam bearings walking out, oil pickup o-ring, oil pump bypass, the bypass in the oil pan, and oil pump itself. E85 has a very high octane rating but it take around 30% more to run an engine compared to gasoline- so better performance but worse mileage.

Great find and save of that classic! The trick to backing a trailer is to put your hand at the bottom of your steering wheel when backing. Which ever way you hand goes, the trailer will also move in that direction.

Don't forget to replace the Fuel Accumulator. I have an Oct 81. Also check "The Valley Of Death" for block rot. There is a rubber coolant hose that can leak and corrode the aluminum block. Also, buy the DPI fuel line kit. Much easier to install. The frame is ceramic coated steel (not stainless). Water can get inside and rot the frame. Be careful when jacking it up. And finally, the VW VR6 swap is a great option. LS aways and I mean always struggles with cooling. Keep that in mind if you're going to upgrade the power plant.

23:09 "Look at this, this is how the speedo is, it only goes to 80" while pointing to the rev counter. The speedo is the one to the left of where you're pointing. I'm not even mad though dude, I'd be unable to think straight if I had just bought a DeLorean! Congrats!

That’s actually the tachometer you are pointing at that goes to 80, or 8,000. The speedometer is on the left-hand side, and it actually only goes to 85. For the movie car, they had to make a new graphic that took it to 95, you can see this at the Peterson automotive museum.

I have watched all these and I was saying to my son that if it was me, I would definitely put an LS3 in it and then you mentioned it briefly. I know it's a piece of history but the LS3 is a hell of a motor and this would be the prettiest and the quickest Delorian on the planet with that motor showing through the back quarters. I know the thought has entered your mind too when you were mentioning the MPG on it.

Quick tip you may need to move the car back a couple ft to help with the tounge weight, you may have experience a wiggling or swaying sensation.The axles should have amount of weight on them.
