YOU CAN'T USE THAT RELEASE! Sam and everyone else- when the 997 and newer is dead, and you hook a battery to the red pull-out, you CAN ONLY USE THE KEYLESS HOOD RELEASE ON THE KEY. Don't insert it into the ignition; turn your jumper on with the ground on the non-painted hinge. 992s have a synthetic hinge in the middle, but the flare at the door is still steel- use that. If it doesn't work, you should walk up to the right front side of the front bumper in front of the hood and press your key's remote release, as your key fob battery may be low and the receiver is there. You can't use the button right on the door seal exactly where you are working- it is inoperable. I've had a bunch of 911 Turbos and know from first-hand experience. Just did my friend's '21 Turbos S. I stopped the video at 2:19 because it is too painful to watch you go down that road. If anyone has questions about this procedure, I'm happy to help. These can be frustrating times. NEVER use a cigarette lighter jumper to attempt a jump start. That can blow the main computer, and if it doesn't, you'll have to visit a Porsche dealer to reset it. The cigarette lighter can only be used to trickle charge. BEST WISHES

Hey Sam, I work on these cars almost daily and felt that I could provide some input. The coolant level is checked with the engine cold I tend to run them on the low line on my cars. They are known to have some wacky cooling systems that like to cause all kinds of trouble. Unfortunately most of the time these cars have internal leaks it's a cracked head. These cars are known to have heads that will develop cracks that will need to be repaired. The head gaskets are very strong on the m96 and m97 engines and rarely fail. Good luck to you Sam and can't wait to see this car back up and running.

@theesj74152 жыл бұрын
It works in my 996 but I use a trickle charger to power it. It’s possible there is so little voltage in the battery that your jump pack isn’t powering the car. I didn’t see any dash lights come on which indicates no power.

Sam you need to use the key remote to open the trunk while you have the jump post powered up. There is a better ground on the door striker for your jump pack. The button on the sill will not work. I have unlocked a ton these 997s that way.

Sam Sam Sam.......... I just went thru this exact same scenario last week and tried everything you did. Then after digging in the Interwebs I found that the little electric latch on the door sill wont do the trick. You have to use the trunk button on the key fob. It took a few tries but it finally opened. Now onto what's causing the battery drain and I am certain you've already learned its a bad cable from the junction next to the transmission that goes to the starter and alternator. Happens to almost every 997.

I had a 2016 Audi S3 that was losing coolant for months but ran perfect and never overheated. I had to add coolant what seemed like every week. We searched for hours upon hours countless times to located where the fluid was going because you could smell it, but you couldn't see anything. Finally a European shop found that it was blown head gasket causing an external leak only and not an internal leak which is why the oil was not milky, no overheating, no problems. It was only leaking while the car was under power, and then falling off the engine onto the ground and/evaporating, but again only while driving which is why we could never find any of the missing coolant. Sounds similar to what you have going on.

On my Mustang, it was the water pump - the seal was going bad under pressure and based on the design, it would leak coolant when hot. Not enough to cause oil problems. YET. This is a known issue on my car and you simply replace the water pump every 6-7 years like a engine belt. My guess is that whatever it is, you caught it before it caused major damage.

Hey Sam, Just my 2 cents worth. As you know dropping these engines is a piece of cake. What's not is the costs for these parts. I know that FCP and ECS are both running Memorial day sales at the moment. I recently bought a head gasket "kit" from FCP. It'll have all the rings and stuff you'll need. But, like my video you watched says, "While I'm in there Syndrome" will strike you hard and fast here. Don't believe me? I'm 15K in on a 996 3.6l to 4.0l bore out project that started as just a top-end refresh. This 997 has 138K miles so I'm guessing a top to bottom refresh may be in order as well as the IMS. You didn't mention how much you paid so hopefully you have some cushion to buy the necessary parts and still come out righ-side up. Good luck. Oh and if you want to sell it, I may be interested. :)

I just went through the dead battery/front trunk thing with my Boxster (again). This is an amazing engineering flaw by Porsche but not too bad once you go through it. Much depends on just how dead your battery is. If it is not totally dead, you might be able to hook up a battery tender or charger to the terminal that is shown in this video of the fuse box. If you have an earlier model, you might have to jump the C-3 fuse as it won't have the special terminal that Porsche put on later models. That is the one three rows down (Row C) and the third fuse to the right (Fuse 3). For many tenders, if they can't recognize the battery because it has no or very low voltage, they won't work. The car is just protecting its electrical system here. The classic and popular battery tender, the Beltran Battery Tender needs at least 3 volts in the car battery to recognize it and begin it's magic. If you have 3 volts, you may have to leave the tender on for an hour or two to charge the battery enough to let the trunk latch work. The very expensive Porsche Cigar Lighter tender needs something like 5-6 volts in the car battery to work. So if your battery is dead-dead, you need a plan B. You can either try a good charged up 12 Volt car battery and hook it up in the fuse box like we mentioned above, or get a real battery charger (not a smart tender like the Beltron) and try that. The spare battery won't need some minimum voltage in the car battery to work. If you use a real car charger/starter, it should have two or more settings. One is "automatic". This makes the charger go off and on so that you don't overcharge the car battery and ruin it. You don't use this setting as you need a minimum battery voltage here too . There is another setting which is "manual". This just shoots power to your battery and it doesn't care if there is any voltage in the car battery or not. The danger is that it will overcharge and ruin your battery. The horn may begin to honk when it gets power. Push the trunk button or pull the lever if an older car. The trunk should open and the horn should stop. Remove the charger then to use it directly on the battery in the front trunk. Put the charger onto the car battery. Set it to "manual" since the battery is still too low for the automatic setting to work. Let it charge on the 15 amp setting for maybe a half hour. (I use the 2 amp setting for two or so hours because ... fear of electricity lol.) I then put the charger on automatic (you can begin to use your tender here instead also) until the car battery is fully charged. In the future, be sure to keep a tender on the battery unless you drive the car often to keep the battery charged. It took me having to do this twice before it got through my thick head to always use a tender. If you don't drive the car from 2 to 6 weeks depending on the state of the battery, it WILL go dead. Some electrical things in a Porsche just keep working even while you are sleeping. The computer turns more things off as the battery gets lower and but eventually it will drain completely without a tender. If you can access one, a portable car starter battery which has a cable with an OBDll plug works well. Just plug it in to the OBDll port and turn it on. I used this the last time. The OBDll plug has a power pin that introduces voltage into the system to power it up. (PS. I just looked on Amazon and you can get an OBDll cable that will clamp onto any random car battery to do the same thing. This is easier than having to mess around with the fuse box. I'm getting one of those to keep behind the passenger seat just in case!) There are other methods that require digging around for a manual emergency cable. They are around on the internet. The cables may be in different places depending on the age of the car or if it is British or not. (Right hand drive vs Left hand drive).

If it’s losing coolant and it’s not an external leak then it can go either in the oil or in the cylinders. If the latter then no external leak and you can see the air in the coolant - hence the result at the end. I had this in a boxter and I used a coolant sealer and it actually worked. I sold it fast.

A cracked cylinder head (good used head) and gasket is under $1000 to repair if you catch it this early. The guy who sold it was probably told by the dealer that it would need a whole new engine or something. The issue, of course, is dropping the engine. This isn't your V6 Buick where you have the top end apart in an hour.

Same thing happened to me, air oil separator had to be replaced. I got lucky, only 1200 bucks (indy shop) to replace a 90 dollar part (full retail from the dealership). It is on the back of the engine and I just didn’t feel like dealing with it. Pulled out and drove 5 miles and my shift link cable broke, shop was closed. Towed it home and waited on pelican. I love driving the 997.1 but it feels cheap and it has given me more trouble than any pcar I’ve ever owned. Just little things break all the time.

I bought a BMW 2010 528Xi and sold it 2 weeks later because I cant drive a car that doesn't have a dipstick. That is the stupidest idea any engineer has come up with.
@chriskelvin2482 жыл бұрын
Porsche hasn't had a dipstick since the late 50's. The FUEL dipstick!!! But silliness aside, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the change to oil level sensor was in response to most people never bothering to check their oil level unless the car started yelling at them. Basic "car walk-arounds" aren't for people who can't be bothered to avert their attention from a phone screen for a moment to observe the "actual" world.

My S-class came with a dipstick tube with a factory cap on it, and NO dipstick. There's thinking. You're supposed to check it electronically or buy a dipstick. Just like Apple now makes you buy a phone charger instead of including one, or a dongle if you want ethernet or USB A ports on your laptop. Ridiculous.

Sam…… when you’re pressure testing you aren’t putting air throughout the cooling system. You’re using air to pressurise the system (fluid). When you get a drop it’s not an air leak it’s a fluid leak…….
@newtcrew2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. When he said that, part of my brain was thinking 'that doesn't make sense'. However, Sam is so convincing with his 'Russian disinformation' that I fell prey to his psychological manipulation. Can''t wait to see how he finishes this build!
@philtowle46832 жыл бұрын
Not strictly true. If there is air in the system and there is a hole the air may be expelled easier than the liquid. Depending on pressure air may be dragged in when running or when system cools down. An air leak is a fluid leak.

I have a Cayman l that looks remarkably similar to this car and the electronic front trunk latch and electronic dipstick are design flaws for sure. The rest of the car is amaaaaazing. I would also suggest to check the air oil separator and never fill the oil all the way to the top. Always leave it one to two notches below full.

If the lever by the seat doesn't work, try the button on the key fob before you start digging under the wheel arch, my car will only open the bonnet with the key fob when the battery is flat or even disconnected, I actually disconnected the battery and locked the keys in the trunk, I had to replace the battery in my spare keys before I could get in

He needs to at the least get a portable lift system in place. Dropping an engine like that requires 3 ft of clearance and jack stands that high is asking for a trip to the ER. It's time to rip that band aid off and get something installed.

"As a car guy..." How many comments start out this way? But as a car guy, as you were going through the basic motions of finding why it was low on coolant, I kept thinking to myself, "YOU BOUGHT IT AS IS!" If the car were trouble-free, it would not have been "as is" and otherwise in such nice shape. IOW, there *HAD* to be some major problem - like, ohhhhh, a blown head gasket? It seemed obvious. But hey- great video! I really like this channel! And can I also say that I like the theme music at the end?

excellent analytic and pragmatic thought process.....a must see video for all Porsche owners. The front trunk electric release is really stupid, just like an electronic dip stick or the poor engine access on the Cayman. Porsche cars are rewarding in so many aspects but I never understood the need to convert easy and effective solutions, into complicated and unreliable ones.......this goes against good engineering and only leads to greater headache and financial expense....Porsche should change this but is probably too proud to admit this.
