Awesome stories. I’d love to see a room tour. I had a similar experience. A very close friend asked me one day if I wanted some records about 3-4 thousand. The contents of a local college radio station. When I arrived there with a car load of boxes it turned out to be closer to 35,000-40,000 records. He just laughed at me. Figured I’d say no if he told me the truth. My wife was not pleased. The station was there since the sixties and the records were discontinued in the late 90s when they converted to CDs. Loads of promos and test pressings many unplayed. I can’t remember how many trips I made in my Ford Taurus transporting them all to his house and mine. I actually broke the suspension in the car doing this. I’m still selling these on eBay and found some real gems. I never throw records away, they make great tax deductions by donating them to goodwill. . A lot of music I got to listen to that otherwise I’d never have heard. He passed away shortly after that and I still miss him. I smile when I see that mountain of records and think of the fun we had getting them.

Went to Berkeley California one day and that store put cases of rejects on the sidewalk. It was kind of nervous for me because I did not want to go to jail for "stealing" scratched records. But they did it weekly I guess. My friend says at least he can play the songs that are not scratched

Academy Records in NYC used to take their unsellable records, package them up in brown paper so you couldn't see what was in the package, and offer the packages for free. Each customer could take one package, but you had to promise not to open it up until you got home. The records were not trash, just titles that would never sell at any price.

Wow, sounds like a nightmare. I'm thinking of opening a store of my own soon and I'm trying to build up an inventory. I ran into a guy recently that says he has a collection of 10,000+ records he wants to unload. Problem is, he lives 600 miles away from me. These pitfalls are things I'll keep in mind. Cheers!

I have over 350 records myself! From the Temptations, to Herb Albert, Stevie Wonder to the Jacksons, Tony Bennett to Andy Williams, Grover Washington, JR to Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye to the Marvelettes, Jennifer Warnes to Dionne Warwick, Cameo to Switch, the list resumes! I've bought them at Goodwill, and a record store in Long Beach, CA called Fingerprints! Went there in January last year, and haven't went ever since! They all, are sitting at my better half's house. I've listened to vinyl ever since a youngster. My first 45 vinyls were Michael Jackson "Beat It", and Deniece Williams "Let's Hear It For The Boy"...One of the best birthday gifts I received on my 6th birthday was a WKRP phonograph my mom got me! If I still had it, I'd feel very sentimental! My first vinyls I bought at my nearest Goodwill 10 years ago next month, were Randy Crawford "Abstract Emotions", Grover Washington Jr "Baddest", and Tom Scott "Intimate Strangers". Haven't played them in over a month, and haven't been to my soul mate's house since last month because of the excruciating social distancing.

Wow! I would have walked away from the first guy. I would have told him "A third of the volume a third of the price! That's fair...you misrepresented how much you have." I also would have shown him the money and said "Half now and the other half when it's loaded." That may work, feel free to use it. When it comes to garbage vinyl I have two questions. First could you sell not playable records for decour either in volume (like 50 count or 100 count) or weight? Also since vinyl is reground and reused in facotories, could you sell crap records and recycle the vinyl? I'm curious from a reduce/reuse aspect of less waste and also more money for you.

I figured something like this would be a next step for you! Congrats. I see Dr. John behind you I'm interested in :) but thanks for sharing your experience. I mapped out how I would run a business with vinyl but it wouldn't scale to much profit. It would only be for the love and I'm worried a business would ruin the fun of the hobby. I liked how you handled the guy at different points along the way. I think you did the best you could as the situation progressed. I'd like to fund one of those original peaches record crates too. I use actul peaches crates now. I'll shop your discogs store if you have one or feature you on records stores across America of you open a store.

Glad I watched this. I am a small dealer, selling out of an antiques mall. Without a store of my own, it is hard to find collections or lots to buy, so I did some advertising in an antiques publication. I tended to get 2 kinds of responses. 1) Someone who had "a lot" of records, like a whole box full :) and couldn't name anything. 2) Someone who had thousands, but also gave no names. Before travelling far to look at collections, I try to get the guy to talk about his collection. If he starts telling about the Coltrane and Miles Davis albums, and all his Beatles and Stones, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, that is good. Still better if he would mention, Zappa, Beefheart, some punk, Velvet Underground. Then I know he is a serious collector who probably has good stuff in good condition. I really had no success with the ads, and I could tell you strange stories, stuff that didn't even seem to make sense. A thing to keep in mind is, there should be plenty of record stores scattered around the upper Midwest here, but if someone is calling from out of state trying to move thousands of records, it is probably because he had no success within a 200 mile or so radius. So proceed with caution.

There's one guy here trying to sell his stuff, and wants to sell it in bulk, but doesn't want to show anyone what it is, which is insane. :) Lifting tons of vinyl is work, you have to be real careful as you well know. I probably would not have gone down there if the guy could not have at least sent me a couple of photos, but you came out pretty well, all considering.

Jan 1, 1972 the government made the selling of bootlegs illegal. I ditched school one day and hit one record store who sold them and WOW they’re selling them all for $1 each. I bought one copy of everyone they had. Boy were they garbage to listen to. “Jeff Beck Group Live” sounded like the dude used a $19 portable cassette recorder and was in the top row of a 20,000 seat venue. Only a couple were in-line recordings. They’re purty to look at and fun to find but boots overall are crap.

I have often wondered something watching your vids. You said this guy got into trouble because he kept all the good stuff. You always talk about going through collections you buy and keep the really good stuff for your collection. Why doesn't that get you in financial trouble. It seems like the really good stuff never reaches the "Joe public" small collector. It just goes from one big collector to another. What little does get out is top dollar at the record store or online. Just curious.
@noblerecords
@noblerecords 14 күн бұрын
No, that’s not really at all what I do. I’m a collector but I probably keep 1 in 5,000 records that come in the shop. At this point, I don’t keep anything unless it’s insanely rare, which I have the right to do because I’ve worked my butt off the make this business what it is. So 99.95% of what we get in collections to straight out to the shop. The video this comment is on is a very old video. My collection has grown drastically since then so there’s very little that I still need. On the flip side, most of the things I add to my collection don’t come from the shop, it’s trading with other collectors. Does that make sense?

careful when doing this kind of "buy"........"Appraised" more that a few "hoards" of "goodwill dumpster dives" in my experience....Had one guy that actually built pallet racking floor to ceiling in a two car garage...never seen that may Barbara Streisand and Bert Kaempfert records in one setting......

Stuart you sound needlessly negative. What if someone went on your page and fired shots at you for the cover songs you post? No need to be negative, skip the video if you don’t like it.

@@noblerecords Oh dude I totally didn't mean too!! SO sorry. It just sounded like an ordeal for you and I just feel like it must have been a tough day. I'm glad you share all kinds of stories and I did give it a like. Apologies.

Stuart HA! So I read it wrong. Sorry about that. Yeah I get a lot of negative feedback on videos like these. I see what you were saying. Sorry about that. Yeah it sucked man. It was a rough day. In the end it was worth it. Thanks for watching, sorry again 😬

Stuart no sir, it was all my bad. I read it wrong, thanks for the kind words. I get a lot of comments that are very rude. So, maybe I assumed it was. Lots of people tell me to kill myself and stuff 🤣🤷‍♂️ You did nothing wrong. Thanks again.

my store went out of business after 60 years. Owner let drug addicts run the place and one day they were desperate for a fix I guess and sold me 5,000 45s for 150 dollars. Then they went out of business. Which never would of happened if they would of hired me.
