I bought the cheapest and rarest Golf GTI Mk2 I could find - how broken is it?

Trying to find a big bumper Mk2 Golf GTI in Calypso Blue is a bit of a mission, but amazingly I managed to source one and it was a bargain... however it does need a lot of work doing to it to make it a show winner again. So, join myself and Big Neil as we set about restoring a classic over the coming months!

Howdy, the way to fix reverse/first gear issue is to pop the gearshift boot and inspect the reverse lockout plate thats made out of plastic and prolly fell apart, you can change it by drilling two rivets and slapping new one, if that didnt fix it, there is a nut and bolt you can crack near the gearbox allowing you to adjust linkage

I own a calypso green MK2 GTI as well. just bin off the 8v and stick in a 20vt

Just awesome my dream motor mk2 but in oak green 16v but already have a mk5 gti sat in the garage doing nothing and a 7.5 gti as my daily so the missis won’t let me get a mk2 just subbed can’t wait to see this all fixed up

The BBS wheels are from a car I had 28yrs ago! mk1 golf gti sportline cabriolet.

I nearly bought this car, I recognise it from ebay. Glad I didn't now. The wheels look correct bbs ra to me although painted black. 15" is the correct size for a gti if that's any help

Owned a few gti mk2 and 4s ..Pas makes a mk2 far worse to drive ..much better off without it . I would consider a 1.8T swap

Misfiring? May as well VR6 swap it 😂 without a doubt the engines that should have come in these from factory

Too heavy and ruins the handling though ..1.8T and 180 bhp is easy and will still handle ..vr6 sounds best though
