The whole drive-train/engine of the DeLorean was a derivative of the PRV (Peugeot Renault Volvo) partnership, founded in the 1980s to commonize parts for a V4 or V6 and manual/auto transmission in the 2.0-3.5 litre size, and hence through volume lower costs. The engine is a mix of all three partners products, mainly Peugeot-Renault. Starting with the transmission, its a Renault type 4141 - not common in the USA, but parts and a rebuild kit easily obtained in Europe (for instance, used on the Renualt 25). You or The Wizard should be able to find suppliers in either France or if searching in English the UK - drop me a PM if you need help. The engine problems on that engine are often derived down to the fuel injection system, often the pump (pressure) or control unit (Awful French electronics = Yuck! The DeLorean company do a great and reliable rebuild, that even you might be able to attempt). However, I'd start with The Wizard doing a fuel system flush. The biggest issue with collector cars is that they get poorly stored, and hence have square tyres, treacle-like oil and degraded fuel (I have bought enough "great" motorcycles to know the issues). I'd be very tempted to leave it in your storage unit till early spring (it certainly won't rot in the snow, but the underside will badly anodise), then after a transmission rebuild and fuel system flush, see what happens - you might be surprised! Good Luck!

These cars are a total mystery to everyone EXCEPT the DeLorean community. They know what the issues are, they know how to fix them, and they usually only ever need to be fixed once. Or they opt to fix the problems before they become problems. After more than 35 years, all the problems have been discovered. There really aren't that many, and they're not expensive to fix. Do the normal maintenance that a needs and it runs very reliably. There is one thing that owner's agree is the worst thing for your car-- letting it sit. If you run it at least 5 miles a week, you'll be in great shape. And the more you run it, the better. I am aware of cars with more than 500,000 miles on them-- unheard of in the early 80s. I can tell you from what I've seen that you got a great deal on this car. Spend a little more money and you'll profit nicely on the resale. The only dumb thing you can do as a DeLorean owner is to go it alone. Get involved in the community, do your homework, spend a little money wisely, and prepare for years of fun!

He'll sink in around 20-25 in the next two years just to keep it going. And saying there aren't that many problems on these cars... SERIOUSLY? Just scrolling thru the video... the doors droop. As well as the headliner. I see he mentioned something about it stalling if he accelerates too fast. He's excited now... and that's great. But let's see his receipts in SIX MONTHS for maintenance and repairs and see how this 'they're not expensive to fix' theory holds.

You can get transmission rebuild kits easily from Europe, that trans was used in so many vehicles over here, you just need to read the data plate on the trans to make sure you're getting exactly the right parts as there were probably hundreds of different specifications of the trans depending on what car it went in originally. The stalling issue is very well known with these engines, it's either fuel injection issues or tired or badly adjusted carbs depending on what set-up the car has. It strikes me that before you start spending money on it you REALLY need to have a good, long talk to the big DeLorean specialist in the US who should be able to point you in exactly the right directions and can probably supply nearly all the parts you're likely to need. I would say definitely do not buy a new-old stock transmission as there's a very good chance the clutch and drive band material will have degraded over the years so as soon as you put it in the car and try to drive it they'll all just tear themselves apart and leave you in the same position but $5000 lighter in the pocket...

@@getchasome6230 Absolutely. Electronic coins are a fiat currency. They have no value outside of the perceived value held by society. Unfortunately, a barter system is the only way to distribute things of real "value" (to help you survive and thrive in life such as food/seeds, building materials etc.) really. Once the US got off the gold standard in '71, the USD became a true fiat currency holding no value except what is perceived by society. If you want to be able to survive a USD market crash, I highly recommend that you invest in storable goods that can help you live in a society (ideally off the grid) where production of goods stops and you are forced to adapt or die. Might I suggest a few AR (one for each family member able to wield a rifle) with 20+ 30rd. mags each and 10,000+ rounds of 5.56 being a good place to start! Not that long ago there is still a DeLorean dealership in the US, which I can't believe I'm saying whether straight face. They've bought all the remaining new stock parts they could get their hands on. And they've done a little bit of hunting around, picking up the Lorient and such. They are repairable and Rebuild and restore. I'm trying not to be a total wiener because the DeLorean is one of the bucket list Cars I'll never have.but the trick is I've seen them numerous times in Canada for 10 and 12,000 in reasonably good shape running and driving without any major issues. It's not a joke. Look in the Canadian auto trader. From time to time or Canadian classic car websites they pop up every so often. I know 14,000 doesn't sound like much to some a you most vehicles iPhone were around the thousand and 1500 I'm pretty low on the food chain. I'm not got a hate though I love the DeLorean . I think your best bet is to bite the bullet and go to the Gloria dealership and see about procuring a new transmission. They've might be able to do a rebuild job for you, but I think at the end of the day your best option is just putting a new one in. I'm assuming you can afford 5000 for the transmission given you spent 14,000 on the vehicle. that's stalling issue is what's really got me a little shaky. Dear Jesus only knows what it could be with a computerized vehicle like that. I'm thinking something to do with fuel injection issue but that could be any one of 100 things causing it. from what you said about the tires. It's probably been sitting a long time but I don't think dirty gas would cause that problem. I don't know if this would be something to ask the Wizard or talk to the boys over at DeLorean America somebody mentioned earlier, they are in taxes. I forget which state they are in but they've got a nice big dealership and work on a lot of these cards for people. Maybe you could do a video and work out some sort of deal with them, or it just throwing it out there. In order to change the transmission from an automatic to manual you would to have cut into the frame member and weld in a new plate where the shifter is located. The mounting plate holding the shifter in place is either higher or lower depending on if the frame was designed for the three speed automatic or five speed manual transmission. And you would also need to change a coolant metal pipe that feeds coolant to the automatic transmission. It would be more trouble than it’s worth. Just buy a DeLorean with a manual transmission if that is what you desire. @digitalrailroader6 жыл бұрын
Kevin Smith yeah the LS Delorean they reviewed still had the Renault UN-1 transaxle in it, and I went back and watched it again and it turns out that the input shaft is actually a 2 piece design that has a splined collar linking them together; and it’s that splined collar that strips out from the torque.

The PRV engine was fitted to Peugeots, Renault and Volvo but not Citroën. Peugeots and Volvos with these engines were rear wheel drive and so my money would be on the transmission being Renault 30 based. Yours looks like the K Jetronic fuel injection which was on the Peugeot 604 STI and Volvo 264 and I would have thought that someone familiar with these in Volvos should be able to get it to run right. There is a kit to put a Holley carb on the PRV but I think it was more targeted at the Solex carb models rather than K Jetronic ones. They have different intake manifolds. The Renault Alpine guys are still into the PRV and can help. I own a Peugeot 604 SL with this engine (Solex) and so I know a bit about them. The engines are better than their reputation suggests, especially with modern oils. Maybe your best bet is to find a Renault Alpine manual transmission and convert it as it is a manual that you really want anyway.

Also you should know that after Peugeot and Renault gave up with the PRV Volvo kept developing it. The last ones were in the 1988-91 Volvo 760 and had heads with an oil bath that the cams would dip into which fixed the rocker arm wear and they had LH Jetronic fuel injection. If you could find one of those it could make a nice reliable bolt in upgrade.

These PRV motors run on Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, find someone with a pressure gauge and check the control pressure and system pressure, your stalling issue could be high control pressure (the pressure regulators can stick closed and cause high control pressure which makes the motor lean right out). Also check warm up regulator. I've set up a Delorean over here in the UK that had almost exactly the same symptoms as well as difficult starting and a lumpy idle, I'll see if I can dig some K-Jet parts out and knock a video together if you don't have a K-Jet guy near you. The good news is this fuel injection was used for years across TONS of companies so parts aren't too hard to come by! Good luck, gorgeous Delorean!

While you may know this already, as a Columbus, Ohio native, it was always an amusing anecdote told to me by my father that the owner of Big Lots, a Mr. Shenk, purchased all the new, unused parts when the Dumurry factory closed in '83 and built some remaining cars with them before placing the rest in long term storage. These were eventually told to 'DeLorean Motor Corporation' in Texas in the late 90s, which still builds new cars from the new old stock parts. I have to believe that between a bunch of old junkers sitting around in Columbus yards and the Texas company, you can find rebuild parts for the automatic transmission. Alternatively, the group in Texas does an electric motor conversion which, to me, seems only one step down on the awesome scale from a working Mr. Fusion.

Us Volvo people tend to run a mile from the 6-cyl cars for this reason, despite the lovely smooth drive you get in a 260 or 760 when it's running properly.
