A couple suggestions for future ball casting. Drill a locator pin hole for each half of the mold, one in each equator of the ball. Fabricate a pin with base to fit the hole snuggly, but not and interference fit. Make the pins enter ball at least 3", but ideally 4". Stand ball on pin and pin base in box. Pour first half of mold. Let cure. Insert 2nd pin, which should be identical to 1st pin. Use silicon, graphite, or some other non reactive, non-silicone soluble/miscible lubricant on the mold face, to keep the 2 halves of mold from bonding (can also use paper/cellophane) Pour 2nd half, let cure. Separate 2 halves of mold easily due to the barrier, remove ball. Granted, I forgot to add a pour cup. So maybe just pin 1 side and a cup on the other.... The locator pin allows you to develop a core and suspend it. I'd suggest molding something with epoxy and tungsten for ease of casting and drilling. Have a buddy 3d print negatives of weight block and outer core, to make a mold. Include a locator pin in both. Have fun on the adventure of "try and see" bowling ball design.
@travishanson1667 ай бұрын
Don't forget glass beads for outer core shell. Weigh raw materials or you may end up with a 40lb ball.......

Id love a part 2 of this video to improve the homemade ball. Id suggest leaving the huge lump in the ball after pulling it out of the mold, and getting rid of that chunk with a pro shop drill since they have drill bits to make the ball surface perfectly round. These are the bits you use after filling in a chip or a finger hole, fill it in and then drill to make the surface smooth again

@decadude89686 ай бұрын
This is essentially what i really want to do but i just dont have the time or money. I would love to see you make an improved homemade one with a couple suggestions: Prop the ball slightly up with something small for it to sit on before pouring the first half of the silicone mold. Something like a flat sanded bottle cap. That way the potential flat spot that you'll sand away will be much smaller and less likely to cause an inconsistent roll. Also, definitely do not forget to put mold release on the first half and the ball before doing the second half, that way you can actually pull it apart when its cure. It would also be absolutely dope if you put in something that weighs about 3 pounds for a core. You could use almost anything you want, including your own design, that way it would actually have some flare. You could do mica powder with the resin so that way it looks prettier too lol. Another option for stronger motion is to use entirely ball filling material that people use to plug and redrill equipment. I believe its urethane material so you'll get much more motion i would assume. Overall really cool to see someone else try this. I would love to see it done with a weight block in it though, which is what i would do since i have a couple of my own designs for weight blocks.

It was probably at least 4x as expensive as buying a ball full retail plus drilling at an out of state tournament, but if you ever had the wild hair, you should make one without a flat spot, and put a weight block in it. Like a solid 3lb rectangle to get the weight to 15
@AMFthereturn6 ай бұрын
Definitely needs a core and an outer shell for the core. And maybe some paint and some additives for the resin so its you know reactive. This should definitely be a series. Earned a like💪
@rickscott73507 ай бұрын
When you mold the 2nd half you need to put a release agent on top of the bottom half so the molds will come apart easy. Also when you mold the bottom you need to flip it so you can mold the open part of the ball. I only know this because my son does molding of items and ive learned from him. .
@chrish73366 ай бұрын
As you mentioned at the end, need to change how the mold it made to get rid of the flat spot. The box is a soft surface so it would sink into the Cardboard, need a firm surface to reduce the edge. Also Find a ball that is slightly larger (New not worn) Even light sanding will reduce the overall ball size. Us that for the mold you can then sand it slightly(put it on a lathe) to remove a small edge. Should be interesting to see what comes from your next mold.
@thomaschilders57376 ай бұрын
Yup...Need one made with an undrilled ball and a weight core. You could also make it a little larger (8.75") and have someone use a sphering machine to get a really clean looking ball at 8.595".

One of the best vids you've ever made! With your old mold, I thought about that flat spot right from the beginning. If you just turn the mold over after it dries, you could put the ball back in and THEN pour back over the flat spot to complete the nice, completely round mold. Won't have to make an entire new one then. Fun video. Makes me want to make my own ball too!

Yes. I would like to see you make a ball without the flat spot & if you’re still thinking to make a core that would be an additional experiment. Its just a thought but I’ll wager you can design your own core with modeling clay. Fire it in an oven to harden it. Then cast the core same method as your ball. Then throw at least three games with the new ball. I know it will be a lot of work for you, but wow what a great video you’ll make. Who knows; it would be great if Brunswick will be asking you to be on their design team shortly there after. Good luck. I hope you can make it happen.

Large silicone molds can be really tricky. But the outcome was a lot better than I expected it to be. I'm far from an expert but I can give you a couple of tips, when you get silicone also purchase mold release spray. It's pretty self-explanatory. Use it on the og ball and inside the silicone mold. It would probably also prevent the two halves of the mold from fusing. also you might want to consider making it just a little bit oversized by a couple millimeters. You figure out how, lol. Then throw it on a spinner and cut it down. Ask for the core, you can do the same thing as the 20lb ball. Then hang it in the middle of the ball and pour around it. Do some small experiments with using less hardener in the epoxy find out if it makes it softer or just makes it take forever Do you think storm would get all pissed off at you if you called it the Dirt Road? Think brown food coloring or dye. (Eeeew!) Good luck chocolate lover!

Outstanding video really enjoyed it, I saw two problems with this ball, the first one obviously was that flat spot LOL. You needed something to suspend the ball from the bottom to prevent that from happening, but you did say in this video you think you know how to fix that problem already. Next no type of weight block inside the ball would love to see you design your own weight block i.e., a design that's not been used inside a ball yet and put it inside your homemade ball and see how that works out for you. Would also like to see you add some color to the ball like maybe do some kind of a tie-dye type of deal if you know what I mean, would just like to see you use some colors that have not been used yet in bowling balls that would be cool don't you think? Anyway, we'll be looking forward to your next homemade bowling ball video, keep up the GREAT work.

I would start first by removing the finger molds, first but be careful you don't want to remove too much that you will need to do a lot of sanding after a pour. Then make add a 'PIN" with core coming out like an half inch out of the top hole (assuming this is the flat spot). Then write mystery box and take it to Aaron to drilled and smooth out.
