Hello, I think it's better to continue with the fiber glass for your entire keel! Then all the work has not been for nothing. And there is certainly no leak in your boat! Or place a thick rubber mat between your keel and boat and then screw it closed tightly. good luck with your project. greetings from holland
@JackWood25Ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I'll most likely add a ton of fiberglass around the keel and the bottom of the hull. Along with a ton of thickened epoxy.

Nice work on the keel, Jack. Hope there was pizza ready when you got done getting the keel under the boat. Good friends and family are a great help. Have a great week.

Well done and good for you on sticking with it all this time. Just make sure you seal the entire keel so the concrete doesn’t get exposed to the salt water. Again great job it’s been fun watching your progress.
@JackWood25Ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Eventually, I'll cover the entire keel with epoxy, fiberglass and antifouling paint so it'll be completely sealed.

Not sure if you going to be able to drop the keel down now it's been sandwiched with thickened epoxy, but I would suggest you try and drop it down at least a couple of inches and apply a tube of sika 291 or 3M 5200 sealant and then jack it back up and tighten the nuts again. Make sure you have enough so some decent squeeze out happen so you can smooth a fillet around the keel. This way you have a solid seal between the keel and the holes for the bolts that hold the keel onto the hull. The problem with just fibreglassing the keel to hull joint is unless you get a 1/2 inch to 3/4 layer of curved fibreglass, it will eventually crack and it will leak without the 291 or 5200 as the keel will move slightly when sailing
@JackWood25Ай бұрын
I think I have the ability to drop the keel a little bit. I'll definitely test this out and if I can, I grab some of that sika 291. Thanks for the tip, I really appreciate it.

I would recommend glass fibre covering the keel before launch. That will make cleaning the hull of sea growth so much easier than off concrete.

I'll eventually cover the entire keel with epoxy and fiberglass. I also add some antifouling bottom paint.

@JackWood25Ай бұрын
They’ll eventually be smoothed out. I need to figure out a plan first.
@teaddict-Ай бұрын
What plans are you working off of? Been pondering a smallish footprint sailboat build of my own with just enough space below deck for sleeping and storing a few days worth of food and water
@kelpshake650Ай бұрын
Hi, have you ever heard about "setka a" ? It's 16' sailboat designed by a polish naval architec, it can be build as a centerboard version for coastal area and shallow water, or you can attach a bulb fin keel when you feel like you want to cross ocean
@JackWood25Ай бұрын
I purchased the plans off this website called duckworks.com. They have a ton of differently plans and few that sound familiar to what you're talking about.

Fill the gap with wood and thickened epoxy. Create a fillet at the joint and glass if you desire a smoother transition. Fill all pits. and voids in the concrete. The keel needs to be smooth.
@JackWood25Ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Eventually, all of these points that you've mentioned will be addressed. I need to make a solid plan first.
@ashtonmarkham4848Ай бұрын
Maybe some chopped fiberglass mixed with epoxy and thickener to make a strong puddy that will work for a filler between the keel and hull. That way you don't have to use so much epoxy and it will bind well with both concrete and the hull.
@JackWood25Ай бұрын
Smart idea. I have a ton of extra fiberglass so I'll probably go with this method. Thanks!
@ashtonmarkham4848Ай бұрын
@@JackWood25 You're doing a good job though. I wouldn't let these armchair sailors get you down. Everyone talks about building a boat but few ever do in their entire lives. If your boat were mine though I would get rid of the companionway and make a sealable hatch door and make the other hatches water tight too similar to how Wave Rover did his that he's currently sailing across the Atlantic in. I think his boat is 21ft. Basically a submarine if it had to be, with sails. Then you could sail the ocean or a lake. And from living on a boat I can tell you how much I despise companionway slots.
@edwardramirez9213Ай бұрын
I must say that was smart. I had to look up sea boat concrete sea boat keel. You should have used the ancient techniques, of moving massive stones, but you did make it work and I must say bravo. The boat will be stable in the water. Like I say, You live and Learn.
@JackWood25Ай бұрын
Haha, I probably should have done some research regarding how to move such a heavy weight beforehand but my friends and I got it done.
@damonsailsАй бұрын
I’d probably fill the keel smile with 5200 and then fiberglass over everything to fully encapsulate the keel to the boat
@JackWood25Ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip! I still need to plan it out so I'll keep this in mind.
@davnelrussАй бұрын
I'm impressed with your keel... great job! I was just wondering if the Naut 450 plans suggested the addition of the keel or is this your own design modification?
@JackWood25Ай бұрын
I've actually been in contact with the designer of the boat and he helped me out with the keel plans. According to him, this concrete keel should be sufficient.
@pierrepasquet8409Ай бұрын
yo! how did you made claculations for the weight of your keel? or did you took the cheapest heavyest material possible to make it in the shape you need? context: i'm re-building a 8.7 m Sormiou 28 , and (of course) it wont be the same technique (i ended with a 350kg to 400 kg lead bulb at 1.8m deft to get my keel usefull, and i begin to think that it will be a pain in the ash to find lead and master lead pouring techniques.... thanks for your project and your resilience. For your keel i would recommand to put a rubber piece between keel and hull to prevent leaks and movements. and in the inside screwing on a plate , rather directly on you keel beam , it will prevent the bolts from eating you keel beam at each waves . then paint your entire keel with epoxy-friendly paint, fibreglass the entire stuff and then fooling, anti fooling , and my boy you'll be good !
@JackWood25Ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. For my keel, I actually got help from the designer of my sailboat. He helped out with the measurements, weight and shape of the keel. Regarding your sailboat project, I know there are a few KZbin videos out there reading lead pouring, but to me, it seems quite difficult. I'd definitely do some research and see what you can do. I can't offer a ton of support, I don't really know anything about lead keels. I hope your project goes well. Also, I'm going to try and lower the keel to add some sort of sealant. I'm also going to cover the entire keel with epoxy, fiberglass, and antifouling paint.
@yawnboxАй бұрын
how did you know how to make all that haha, that's awesome
@JackWood25Ай бұрын
I've actually been in contact with the designer of the sailboat. He made some rough plans regarding the size and weight of the keel, I just made the frame and some small modifications.
@yawnboxАй бұрын
@@JackWood25 ah that makes sense; still, you make the wood work look simple and easy. the concrete came out looking great. i struggle with wood work for the inside of my own 34' steel sailboat. to fill the gap id look at two-part epoxy, then do the whole bottom with it to protect the concrete. that's what i used for the whole bottom half of my boat. or fiberglass filler then glass the whole bottom?
@divyajyotibrahma8898Ай бұрын
