Thank you! Soil is a really interesting thing but still a bit of a working theory. But so far from my experience with a few species keeping it simple has been 100% successful with breeding. A few other keepers using specialty mixes with beautiful tanks have had no success and we're starting to think soil acidity and debris might play a role. "Craby" another regular commenter here has similar ideas as well. We'll figure it out sooner or later!

@Jim_Wool4 ай бұрын
How often should I mist a paludarium like this? And would my springtails/humidity escape since my lid has 2 small openings and a big opening?
@IndoorEcosystem4 ай бұрын
Misting is a thing directly linked to your tank and room environment I can't give you a specific number. You'll need to work out what's best for your plants. Springtails won't escape but humidity might. But with holes in your lid I'd be more worried about crabs escaping they will find any whole and work on escaping.

What would be the best way to add a filter to this build if you wanted one?
@IndoorEcosystem7 ай бұрын
If you can find a small enough one you can stick it on either end. But it's hard to find something that works in a shallow small space like this. You don't need one though they don't improve anything. Though, if you are making a similar set-up in a bigger tank, say 10+ you can put a filter at either end of the water section easily enough. But again still not required. I've got build videos for bigger tanks where I use a pump.
@simonb47572 ай бұрын
When people say 80% land, does that have to be 80% of the area is soil for burrowing, or 80% of it is "dry" land, so can include the rocks you use for the land barrier above the waterline? Also. What about sections of rock or wood bridging over the water area? Do they help increase the proportion you can class as land?
@IndoorEcosystem2 ай бұрын
80% land above water. But you will want to male sure a large % of that is dirt/soil. Dry land is good for exploring and hunting but dirt is where they make burrows to breed and hide from each other.
@simonb47572 ай бұрын
@@IndoorEcosystemI would say about 45% of the 6 gal setup I am building is dirt, 25% is rock above the water line some with a carpet of moss over it and 30% is water but that water has some rock/wood bridges/outcrops over it meaning probably about 85% of the area when viewed from above is dry land of one sort or another. Its a slightly taller tank too so there is more vertical room with some branches and bogwood platforms with moss on too. Just wanted to check with an expert before I considered getting any inhabitants as the advice I've received from my local aquatics stores that sell them is a bit too vague and unspecific for my comfort.

Do i need any additional food for the crabs/plants or is the moss n litter enough? What do i feed my side isopod/springtail colony? A little late but thanks in advance!
@IndoorEcosystem3 күн бұрын
I have a new video dropping in a few hours that will answer all these questions and a lot more so keep an eye out for it. For your isopods and springtails you can feed them lots of vegetable scraps and fish foods the same stuff you feed your crabs. As well as dead leaf litter. Your crabs will need to be fed regularly. Soil should be at 2 inches deep but deeper is better. I have videos for all these topics on the channel as well so just work your way through them.

@MS-vw6vj No problem ☺️ I have a ton of guides over on my website if you are looking for more info on a ton of different things. I have a species list over there as well. I also have a new big updated care guide video coming in the next few weeks that talks about some of these things. But i would suggest Dennerle, Hagen, Halloween, or Tomato as good ones to start with. They are more common and easier to find. You might even be able to get some captive bred ones too in some places. My biggest tip is to avoid shipping them to you if possible. They don't ship very well unfortunately.

@@IndoorEcosystem thanks!😊 i am now planning out the tank. I have experience with aquascaping, so i am realy looking forward to this new project. I have watched many of your guides already and they have been very helpful. I will surely continue watching them! I will soon be ordering a lot of fish and shrimp from 2 breeders, who breed vampire crabs as well. I thought i will get their crabs with the overnight shipping. I have a lot of experience with one of them, as i get most of the fish for scapes or breeding from him, but if it is not a good option, as you mentioned in a couple of your videos too, i will come to pick them up in person or find another seller locally. (as it would be a 4-5 hour drive, and that goes with saying that i don't have a car) i was at an exotic animal expo yesterday, and they were selling a couple varieties, but only had 1 crab from each. I did know a guy who bred them in town, but he went blind and hasn't kept them since. I will be looking forward to the uodated careguide! 🙂 I realy appreciate your effort and helpfulness towards your community even though you have thousands of subscribers 😉 Keep it up. You're pretty well organised already I don't think you'll have too many issues especially since you have aquascaping experience. It helps a fair bit. Is it possible to include shrimp in a tank like this? I feel like the amount of water space would be far too small, but I'd only intend them as a food source for the crabs, if they can catch them, and not permanent members of the ecosystem. Thoughts?
@IndoorEcosystem7 ай бұрын
Way too small to be honest. Vampire crabs are pretty useless at catching shrimp too. They'll pick off sick ones but healthy ones have a 99.9% successful evade rate. I have a few tanks with double the water volume that shrimp hitch hiked into that keep breeding though. It's not a lot of water either really but they seem to be doing well.

@IndoorEcosystem thanks. A couple more quick questions. I know you have used a small usb pump. How has it lasted? When I look at them on Amazon there's tons of options. However when you start reading reviews they all have comments where people said they went out under 2 months. And what filter foam did you use when shielding the pump. Did you use the courser foam or the finer particle foam.
@IndoorEcosystem2 ай бұрын
@@andyd834 If you're doing a ton of 10 gals don't bother with pumps and filters. They are a waste of time. I only add them because KZbin viewers loves them! But in reality they don't really serve a purpose in a VC tank. They just add more drama and maintenance. Keep it simple for the most relaxing experience! But to answer your question anyway I have bought 2 cheap amazon style pumps. One lasted 2 year the other 18 months and still going. It's a luck of the draw kinda thing. For the filter foam I used a medium density one but I'm not sure on the density grade.

something i want to say about the population of crab tank is this, the real important thing about that is the numbers of male, if you put just 3male in 25L tank, i will say 1~2of them will end of dead. we should remember that male crabs are territorial, so you should think about thier territory 1st, that's why i say the minimum is 20cube for one pair, but you should at least give them a 30 cubes (60L) well if you goes to the limit, i could say you could have 6 crabs(2male 4female) at 30 cubes, but it's really risky, cus it only works when each male has chose the opposing coners as there territory

Bigger is always better but it is how you design their habit that makes all the difference. I highly suggest you check out the other 100 videos on my channel and get back to me :) If you want to help this cause though, you can jump on some of the horrendous selling practices coming out of South East Asia. I have a video on it somewhere here. The community here is about making them the best possible homes possible because they will not be leaving the hobby ever.
