As far as feeding, I've never had crabs but someone just dropped a panther crab on me. I have been feeding him along with the fish, but I added sinking pellets to the mix. I bought some dried shrimp, and can feed him with a long grab claw tweezer thing. I want to set up a calsium crushed shell feeding bowl, to help with his shell, but I'm not sure if a bowl that is always full is correct. I bought a terra cotta boat (about 6 cm long) and was thinking fill the bottom, and then just place that in the water, and he can dig as he wants, but I'm not sure if that is correct. Any advice? We found a 4cm deep bowl about 8cm across, and it fits perfect inside a fishtank pumpkin, we filled it with sand, so I'm hoping this is a safe place for him to molt. Basically a kittie pool with a tent on top, to keep the fish from bothering him.

I'm thinking of using a 30 litre tank for a small group of vampire crabs. It will be my first crab tank and I have a few questions: How would you keep the tank humid? Do you have to spray it occasionally, and if so, with what?
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 7 сағат бұрын
@@sircheese109 30 liters is the smallest you can go. 3 crabs Max! If its a vertical style tank it's too small. To keep the humidity up you need a lid that covers it fully with small holes for airflow. Spraying will depend on the room the tank is in the light etc. Sometims once a day sometimes once a week.

Great to see someone thinking along the same line as me, limiting unnatural materials within their builds 👍 Creating a piece of nature while actually destroying it doing so doesn't sound right. Can't be completely avoided but we should try to limit the impact. Expanding foam creates a lot of mess during application and again when scraping it down. Also use of local resources where possible is a nice approach.

Hi, regarding maintenance and feeding, how long can the tank and the crabs survive without being "taken care of"? Say, if you wanted to go on vacation for a week, would they be able to survive that if you gave them enough food spread out in the tank? And what about the humidity and other abiotic factors, can they still be maintained or do they need to be attended to more often? Thanks for the videos!
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 2 күн бұрын
It really depends how well you set it up and how old it is before you go away. Generally you can easily go 2 - 3 weeks if it's fully bio active and has been set up for a while. But if it's new and still settling in it's best to have someone feed them. Older tanks are always more stable 🙂

@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem Күн бұрын
@@gumlemanden I'd say about 3-4 months is usually enough. Springtails, Isopods, earthworms, snails and shrimp are the best additions. They all self regulate populations and don't over compete the space. Obviously the bigger the tank the better the success as well. It's the standard case of population vs environment size. 🙂

@IndoorEcosystem

@@gumlemanden You'll get to understand your little ecosystem as it evolves but usually the best sign is when you see all sorts of little micro fauna getting around the tank. springtails everywhere, isopods dotted around etc. A good thing to help the system is to add a fair bit of leaf litter to the bottom of the tank. This helps a lot. As it breaks down just top it up.

Spray foam is great when you cover it with something natural. My go-to way of creating a back wall is tying down some small flower pots, spray foaming around them, and then covering the foam with soil and pieces of corkwood while it is curing. Then once cured use glue/sillicone to cover any exposed foam with more soil. Remove the pots to create caves which the crabs love! I'm moving house soon and I can't wait to work on a big tank as a centerpiece to my living room.

not to jerk myself or anyone else off, but I do think there's a sort of mastery to learning how to carve really organic shapes with it. Personally, I've had really great experience with it and enjoy the process of it. Being someone who draws a lot, I think my skills has translated really well into this aspect and has given me a 'critical eye' for what looks inorganic and what does. An important approach to carving foam, just like in painting, is to start with the very big details and look at it from far away, before slowly going into smaller and smaller details. A channel that has pretty impressive foam carvings is Ferret Wonderland. (sorry if this came off pretentious)
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 5 күн бұрын
Not pretentious at all! 😊 I used to be quite a big fan of their channel but All of their vampire crab tank setups are horrendously bad. On top of it they mix the species up as well... I've attempted to explain these issues several times without much luck. So I'm accepting that animal welfare comes second to Aesthetics. Realistically it's not hard to do both... What you say about carving foam is true though, there is quite a skill involved that take a little while to master and really get down to an art. But You can also do some pretty sweet things with cork and clay too 😉 I've got a fair few videos lined up showing so good foam alternative processes. I think you'd appreciate it just as much.
@SomeGuy-qd3li
@SomeGuy-qd3li 5 күн бұрын
@IndoorEcosystem I agree that their setups are not great for vampire crabs. However, this may sound cruel, but I really don't think vampire crabs need to always be able to burrow. They honestly just need a small crevice to hide, and this is easily achieved with just some plants and foliage. It's hard to gauge how 'happy' they are either way
@IndoorEcosystem
@IndoorEcosystem 4 күн бұрын
@@SomeGuy-qd3li I'd consider it the same as a human having a home or sheltering under a bridge 😅 Adding soil is about as simple as it gets... You just spoon a few inches in and you have made their life 100x better. I currently have 7 different species and all of them dig holes and live in the ground. It's where they spend most of their time and how the stay out of trouble, especially females. It's their best protection against males looking to mate 24/7 Once a crab is in a burrow it is next to impossible for them to fight as they don't usually have enough room to swing their claws around. Without soil and burrows you also dramatically drop their breeding rates as females are the ones that benefit the most from burrows. At the end of the day though if you're going to keep an animal and show everyone else around the world how to keep them you should aim to do it to the highest possible standard. 🙂 Maybe I'm just "Old fashion" 🤣
