This is super beautiful! Love the crabs and the alocasia plant you put in it. I've been really getting into alocasias lately, luckily was able to save mine in the terrarium (also exo terra) from last winter's spider mites and have gotten a few more for my fish room. The fogger you're using is pretty cool. Really really gorgeous build! 🙂👍
@IndoorEcosystemАй бұрын
Thanks Tara! The Alocasia brings it all together I find! I just hope I can keep it quite small because some of them get massive! I absolutely hate spider mites, I really hope I can avoid them forever!
@TarasTankFriendsАй бұрын
Oh I know, spider mites are an insidious plague! Yeah, some of the alocasias do get huge. Yours looks like a "polly" to me, they can get quite large and alos love terrarium culture due to the humidity and water. "Bambino" looks similar but stays smaller. Still, mine outgrew it's "Max" of about 12 inches by about 4 inches in height and width before the plague. It's a good one if you want a similar look and a plant that stays in my case about 16-18 inches (40-45cm) tall and wide. "Black velvet"s also stay smaller and there's a mini version of that too, I believe (either that or stores are just selling really small ones labeled "mini" 🤔). Those are the smallest two I know of so far. The ones I have in my fish room seem to be happy with 50-60% humidity due to a humidifier, so Polly could always come out and be a nice houseplant if she gets too big. 😊
@IndoorEcosystemАй бұрын
@@TarasTankFriends Awesome info! I have the feeling you are probably right about it being "polly" It's powering al long at the moment and already thrown out a couple more leaves since the video. I don't mind if it gets fairly tall as long as light manages to make it's way down to the bottom of the tank. Othwise it will become a nice big house plant! Though I suspect it's root system will be pretty tough to rip out! I just looked up the black velvet version and man it looks pretty! I've never seen one for sale here but I think I'll have to keep an eye out for one.

Love the build! Oh and just for info sake, here's the names of the plants you got wrong/dunno ? is a Syngonium, if I'm not wrong the variety should be one of the 'Allusion's. The common name is Arrowhead, but occasionally it can be called Goosefoot or American Evergreen. Peperomia rotundifolia is one you got wrong, it's a Pilea 'Moon Valley'. The Staghorns don't really look like Staghorns. They might be young Bird Nest Ferns. Staghorns have a special leaf they use as a shield around their roots. Not too sure about the wild ferns, but they might be a kind of Davallia. Some call them Rabbit's Foot Fern or Tarantula Fern.
@IndoorEcosystemАй бұрын
Thanks for the names! ☺ Interestingly I copied most of the names straight from the pots they came in! Though the Syngonium was without a label. The birds nest/staghorn is a tricky one though I've used it a few times in other videos and most people ID'd it as a staghorn. But it does resemble a birds nest in a lot of ways as well.

I really love the build it's beautiful! And the video is soo well made thanks for your effort. It's always relaxing an very informative watching your videos :) One question tho You mentioned that if you would build this tank again you would skip the waterfall and instead you would add a few isolated shellow pools How would you clean them? Don't you have to change the water or anything? Thanks for taking your time answering this question :3 I hope I can build such beautiful tanks myself one day
@IndoorEcosystemАй бұрын
I would probably add 3 little pools out of clay pots. Just shallow shelf sustaining ones with a small gravel substrate and some floating plants. They wouldn't get a lot of use so they should stay pretty much self sustaining with the right plant choices. But you could easily just siphon the water out as you would any other water section if you really needed to. That said I wouldn't do it with a side access point like this though it would make it really hard to work with. Eventually, I'll make a video using my idea but it might be a little while yet. Thanks for the support as well!

Amazing set up! Does the heatmap on the bottom heat the tank all the way up to the top? I have been struggling with good temperature in my paludariums over the years, and this seems like a fairly simple solution!
@IndoorEcosystemАй бұрын
It's a gradual quite a gradual heat curve to be honest. I have the sensor about half way along the back wall to make sure things stay pretty stable. The only thing with putting a heat mat underneath is that you'll need space for it too breathe. If you sandwich one under a glass tank and the stand it can be a major safety issue. During the day the light heats the tank from the top and the mat heats from the bottom.

Would you have used filter foam instead of using all Leca? I was going to used filter around the pump and as a false bottom
@IndoorEcosystem26 күн бұрын
Nar, Leca is just too hard to beat. It's cheaper, works better as a biological filter media and fits into all the little cracks between the rocks to get a more snug fit. Filter foam works (I've used it before) but I wouldn't use it for anything too deep. It can get a big saggy with weight on top. So if you're putting rocks and logs and dirt and stuff on top it will compress over time.

@IndoorEcosystemАй бұрын
@faznush4638 my theory is that they are already coming into the trade and it will never stop so I'm hoping to educate people on how to best keep them and breed them so a captive breeding program will put an end to the wild caught poaching. The same thing happened with CPDs (fish) not that long ago. Once captive bred supply is big enough wild caught won't be viable.

waterfalls are allways the worst part of the builds and one of the best part at the end, and with out spray foam is even worse, which is why i hadn't make some vertical builds for few years, but i know it's much better to make vertical builds for some crabs, and i got some of those, so.... I had to build one, it was a lot of pain, and i guess i would make some more of them with out waterfalls, i got too many drift woods, so i need to use them XD and i just love vine plants, and seeing some of yours makes me wants to buy some more plants
@IndoorEcosystemАй бұрын
I couldn't agree more! Waterfalls are really, really tricky to get absolutely perfect! It's funny how much the flow changes over time. Water is really unpredictable! Climbers are such good plants to add! I've been adding them to quite a few of my builds now. They are pretty tough plants as well and the crabs don't seem to pick at them either so they stay in place!
@craby6449Ай бұрын
@IndoorEcosystem yep, i allways check more then 3 times for the way how does it flows xD, and i guess they change that much cus when we turn on the pump for 1st, 2nd, 3rd time, the amount of water that the pump will send canges a bit, untill it is fully settled, No matter what pump we use, this will happens, the price and how we put the pump will cange how long would it takes to settled, but this will allways happens. So when i build one, i allwaya need to adjust it more then 3time. Well something i had built recently is almost like driftwall then waterfall, but it took same amount of time as well xD

I bought 5 crabs of this species for my daughter two years ago (the vendor in Germany wouldn’t let us choose the sexes). Two arrived dead here in Sweden and two more died in the coming week. Luckily the last survivor was a female and we now have over 20 the last time I counted (when transferring to a new tank 8 months ago). The interesting thing is the offspring were a mix of sizes from a few mm to 1.5 cm. Originally they lived in an aquarium with 70% land and were often visiting the water. They now live in a terrarium with some height, but they hardly climb, but love digging.
@IndoorEcosystemАй бұрын
@@carlholmberg7303It's a shame how poorly the ship. That's the main reasons I made the big trip to pick them up in person. It's super awesome that you managed to get them to breed from the last female! I'm hoping to get these to breed as well to get a captive bred population established here. So far I haven't spotted mine in the water at all but they might sneak in during the night. They spend a lot of time in the very top parts of the tank though which is interesting. There's only 3 females that I've spotted on the ground looking for food but no signs of any digging just yet. But they are pretty sneaky so it's hard to find them under all the leaf litter and moss.
