Finally! somebody uses ABS rather than trying to paint PVC! Nice build, question: do you prefer the round port over a slot port?
@righteousbuilds357611 сағат бұрын
I have found that there are only small differences between slot ports and round ports. But because of the tiniest improvement in clarity (at least to my ears), I prefer round ports if I can get away with it. But most of the time, a slot port makes more sense. It should be noted that most of the time, a round port will allow you to maximize interior volume if that's your goal.

@@righteousbuilds3576 thnx for the courtesy of your reply ... lo-o-o-ng time ago I purchased a Goodman's (UK) 18" woofer for a bass amp I was building and happened upon a JBL catalog which had a front loaded folded horn speaker with their famous LE15A 15" driver ... the catalog had a note that construction plans were available for purchase ... with my money order I attached a note asking if it would be possible to increase all the dimensions proportionately to accommodate the 18" driver ... an engineer replied that it should work and asked me to update them on my result ... the thing was huge and provided plenty of low end, but not much in the way of usable midrange which I liked my bass to have

Can't make a thumbnail without a dumbass arrow in it? Impressive driver, tho at this size I expected more sensitivity, way more. I also wonder if at this eclosure size horn would make a louder sub vs. pushing more watts into blunt driver, eh not so sure.

Thank for the comment. 89 db isn't bad for sensitivity, but I've seen better. I'll be throwing 4,000 watts at it, so if it doesn't blow up, it'll produce plenty of SPL.

First of all, for the love of god dude! Please wear safety glasses! You are playing Russian Roulette with your eyes. I have personally experienced the blade kicking back a shard of wood directly at my eye and deflecting off the lens. If I wasn't wearing safety glasses, the eye would not still be with us today. Now, I do have some opinions about the choice of driver, especially in a musical capacity, which you said was the intended purpose of this build. From my personal experience, these heavy moving mass drivers have far too much weight in the cone and surrounds to produce a sound wave with any form of agility. Agility just means the transient response of the driver, it is the ability of the driver to stay true to the input waveform. This means that the bass frequencies they produce tend to stick around far longer than they are supposed to, kind of like an echo but in bass frequencies. The best way I could describe it, is that all they can do is rumble like an earthquake and they lack that quick transient impact of a much lighter driver. You wind up with a sound that is too much earthquake and not enough snare drum. I have actually built a similar enclosure also tuned to 20Hz with triple PVC ports. But the driver I chose was a 15 inch 400W RMS 8 Ohm driver the 15E1022510's from AudioTechnology. Their moving mas is only 131.52 grams with a voice coil 102mm in diameter. The reason for this was as stated above, I wanted a sound that was realistic, not just an overpowering earthquake. The amplifiers choice is also important in this aspect. I chose Class A/B amp (once again, better transient response than Class D) with a comfortable 3X the maximum power handling of the drivers with 2500 watts into 8 Ohms. They are a pair of Crown XLi 2500's in bridge mode, these are fed directly off the pre-amp through an active crossover. With this setup, they integrate seamlessly with a pair of custom built bi-amped tower speaker that are a 3 way 4th order L-R crossover build with 10 inch, 6 inch and ribbon tweeter respectively with 8 ohm impedance. Representation in all frequencies is 100% and balanced across the sweep of frequencies. Transient response is unbelievable.
@righteousbuilds3576Күн бұрын
I would love to hear a setup like yours. You do have a point on the safety glasses. I've had a couple of close calls with the table saw wanting to share its proceeds with my face:)
@FOH3663Күн бұрын
- Moving mass doesn't negatively impact transient response of the driver. - It's worth noting, bass energy "sticking around longer far longer than they're supposed to", is a function of the room's LF decay times, and to a lesser extent ... the amplifier's capabilities. - Class A/B doesn't possess superior transient response than class D - fwiw; transient response and driver control is a function of how much current can be pulsed in the driver's inductive load. - Mms (moving mass) impacts sensitivity, not speed. Although the 15" A.T. driver of yours is of the highest quality, it'd likely require at least 10 of them to approach the capability of the 24" driver.
@BehindthesafetyofLinuxКүн бұрын
@@FOH3663 You are correct on one component of the moving mass of a driver. You can overcome it with a large enough voice coil and a large enough amplifier (more amps requires larger voice coil and vise versa). This however does not mean that more moving mass = more better. It depends on one, the goal of the driver and two, the power behind it. You can see this in A to B comparisons of the frequency response of drivers where the only difference is the cone weight. As you increase the weight of the cone, the drivers lower frequency response improves, but the higher frequency response suffers. This is because higher frequencies require less moving mass(more agility) because of the increased frequency. The driver no longer has the ability to keep up with the higher speed of the higher frequencies. this leads to transient error in those higher frequencies, pulling them down an octave into lower frequencies which is not where they are supposed to be. This makes a snare drum slap sound like a bass drum thump. I will say that these heavy drivers are excellent earthquake devices for home theaters, but that is not what you want in music. When have you ever listened to a live performance where the bass drum and bass guitar was literally shaking the ground? While there is no problem with transients in the peaks of the wave forms in a class D amplifier, there are noticeable timing errors in the wave from across the phase change at 180 degrees offset from the origin (origin being the start or middle of the wave form). This is just the nature of class D. It uses the same circuit to reproduce both phases of the wave form which introduces a delay in between amplitudes.
