Hi, I watched this twice on my tv. I came back today on my phone to comment. I don't know how on the tv. I don't know you except on youtube, it doesn't matter, I care about you all. You're people that inspire and encourage me with every video. Your sharing of the most beautiful life stories stay on my heart. All the work you share, I must share... Your talents and gifts that God gave you, watching you all use them, is such a gift for me because you are using them as we all should. The simple part of Gods word that also makes him happy. Every video is like being with what we all want in life. Like minded people, family and friends feeling a part of a good family miles apart doesn't matter.

As a trim carpenter that has done 100s of stair railings I could see the problems you were going to run into the day you built the steps. We all pretty much learn the same lesson the same way. I think it turned out great and you always do an amazing job of figuring things out.

As a former frame and finish carpenter, I agree. I’d rather have a wider stairwell and lose a bit of living space. A newell post goes where it goes. Deadending into a ceiling is not something I would have considered either. It looks good though.

You got the angle of the new rail just right with the one mounted on the other side. That's what's important. I don't read many of the comments but I sure hope nobody's said anything about what's in your pantry. As far out as you live, it's good to have as much as you do. If something does happen and you can't get to town, you've got enough to keep you all fed for a little bit. It's amazing how quickly that food can disappear if that's all you had to eat. We lived on a farm that was about 45 minutes out of town. We tried to minimize trips to the store so mom and dad tried to stock up. So we had 2 deep freeze, one to keep meat and the other to keep fruits and veggies grown in the garden; we had 2 refrigerators and a decent size fruit room in the basement to keep can goods. You might think that was all too much but when you are raising 2 teenage boys with a "hollow leg", that was just enough. And despite all our cold storage, mom still had to make trips twice a week to the nearby small town 7 miles away to keep us stocked on milk! You are doing great! An inspiration for those of us still planning our permanent home.

I was impressed with your pantry. A person has to look at it and think about how much you use daily and plan for how many days you want to feel safe. I have always wanted to have a years worth of food in my pantry. With your size of family and what I saw you don't have a years worth in that pantry but I would imagine that isn't all your resources. I know you have chickens and goats so you are raising part of your pantry. Good for you!! I was raised on a ranch with no power or running water. We pumped our water and used oil lamps and we made sure we had enough food for a year.

I was pleased to see your pantry so full. I live in a neighborhood close to plenty of grocery stores but I still keep my pantry and freezer full year round! It's the best way to do it. Also, I love the stair rail, it looks great.

Your stair rail is perfect for the style of your house. There's nothing wrong with having a well stocked pantry, I think some people forget not everyone has 2.4 children and live next to a grocery store. You have a large family and live up a mountain, it's common sense to have some food stock so you can cope if you have a large snowfall for example.

Looks great! Just for anyone who wants to do this and does not have the skill with a welder. Steel Tec makes a fitting for this type of application. It’s called a 90 degree black structural pipe fitting, from Lowe’s. I did a simple project myself and the homeowner supplied them worked well.

What a great video. I was reminiscing, as I built almost the exact same railing about 5 years ago. I like how you approached it. Just start. Starting is often the hardest, but usually it’s doing it twice. Done that too. In the end, you get to say, “I did that. It’s not perfect, but it’s excellent enough.”
