It's a nice looking build, and I absolutely agree a throttle is much more precise. That "delay" for pedal assist depends on the pedal sensor and the controller programming. I use a Phaserunner controller on mine, and have the pedal assist set to engage the motor right when my natural pedaling takes the slack out of the chain. It's about a quarter turn of the crank when the bike is already moving, and I also programmed it to apply the power smoothly instead of just turning it on abruptly. Your example of going that fast with only 250 watts is why limiting power is not a logical method of restricting speed. In the US, they don't pay much attention to power, as long as the speed is limited. Many bike companies that sell over here openly advertise 1000, 2000, 3000 watt peak motors, but if they are delivered with a 20mph speed limit, it's ok. Thanks for the video!
@Fur8002
@Fur8002 2 жыл бұрын
I have found the same with my e-trike that the number of magnets and brand of the pedal-assist along with programming the LCD control makes a big difference for the 'delay'. I also limit the maximum speed to comply with UK regulations at 15.5mph.
@ash0787
@ash0787 2 жыл бұрын
on my mid drive bike a non intentional half turn of the pedal will engage the motor, it tries to throw you into trees, lamposts, walls, oncoming traffic, just when you try to adjust balance without thinking, its something you have to learn to get used to. PAS is fun though when you do want to psuedo-pedal. not sure how the professional bikes deal with this unintentional jumping forward issue.
@ghz24
@ghz24 2 жыл бұрын
@@ash0787 When you need to not be thrown by the motor use the brake cut off switch to keep the motor from engaging. Just pull the least "tight" brake lever just enough to disable the motor but not engage the brake pads. Instant temporary manual mode. If you have the brake cutoff installed. That's how I've gotten used to my factory bikes tendency to attempt suicide with me aboard.

If we had the US laws here I wouldn't even bother going through this whole DIY rigmarole. At least some states have 28mph variants, seems pretty perfect to me. I think maybe some type of 1-2hr course or something being required for safety with >20mph variants would be better but still, should definitely be allowed.

I work my ass off on my feet all day and using muscles, Bike time is chill time! And when I speed, I don't want to do any work for it. Trouble is…having a 48v batt still makes it illegal. The regs say 36v…just to ensure it is gutless on hills for overweight, older riders with shot knees. Also…as you say…it goes over the 15.5 mph….so illegal. Its all Government overreach BS, there is no need for such stringency huh! I reckon 750w motors maxing at 20mph electronically restricted, like America should be the aim.
@RandomShart
@RandomShart Жыл бұрын
I agree, up to 1kw and restricted to 20mph would suit most people. No need for any faster than 20mph on a bicycle and people can always peddle at that point if they want to do faster. The extra grunt of 1kw gets people easily up hills using motor and also keeps fatties (me included) accelerating on the flats.

My ebike has been great over the past 6 months. I initially considered 250w but decided to go with a cheap 250w restricted 36v 500w kit. After a couple of months though as I got used to the acceleration power when restricted to 250w, I decided to remove the limiter and have it running at the full 500w/720w peak for the extra torque. After another month I decided to start shunt modding the kit and it’s currently peaking at 1500w(35A) at full charge. The battery definitely doesn’t like the draw and my range has suffered quite a lot on throttle only. Yes it’s illegal but I’ve had no issues from police despite riding past them quite often on my way to work(I don’t go mad, 16-17mph usually but it can reach around 25MPH when i’m helping it out.) The difference between 250w restricted and the way it is currently with the restrictor turned off it can easily get the front wheel up(a little too much as I found out earlier 😂)

pedal assist has always been the most pointless thing for every day use ive found maybe if you have torque sensing its ok but cadence sensing is just nothing or full power which is totally what you want on a powered vehicle is for it to just launch off at full power every time you so much as touch the pedals or when your trying to move slowly having to keep cranking up and down the power settings to find the one you need the ONLY use it has is being able to drop off the throttle and maintain full power as you go along i wish the law would see sense and just allow the throttle because its way safer as you get fine controll over your speed and i feel the only reason its even banned is the people who made the law think that it works by requiring you to pedal faster to go faster when it reality a 2 year old could get full speed out of one i know this because my niece and nephew 2 and 3 love playing with my pedals when its parked in the back yard and on 2 occasions managed to engage the rear motor with just there tiny little hands moving the pedals about 30 degrees of course they wont theyll just get egg on there face and throw a tantrum and cave into bosch and the other big manufacturers of useless garage fillers and force some stupid certification through that just compleatly kills the ebike community by mandating only uk registered and certified ebikes with some hefty fee to test are allowed in the uk killing off competition and making every ebike a sporty piece of crap mountain bike that costs 1500 quid for a lackluster spec that comes in mountain bike, mountain bike,brompton,mountain bike or if your feeling silly road bike with skinny clear weather tires all with amazingly tiny and shit batterys and then the goverment will go back to moaning about how no one will consider cycling or greener transport

I wonder if any manufacturer makes a throttle that only works when pedaling, so you can have the nice smooth application of power but it just rides like a normal bicycle if you don't touch the throttle and also gets around any "rules and regulations".

Those rules and regulations are TOTALLY UNENFORCEABLE. So long as you arent tearing down the street on a scooter or electric scrambler at 25 plus Miles per hour. You arent likely to ever be stopped. I've been riding a 350w ADO A20 for 8 months. It can cover my round trip to work and back of 21 miles. Without me having to ever free pedal. But is also capable of 21mph when unlocked. If I see any police. I just pedal at no more than 15mph on PAS 3. Really nobody cares. There are thousands of delivery riders with souped up 500w PLUS ebikes. Flying around london at 20mph PLUS. Nobodies stopping them. RELAX. Once they see pedals and a chain. Nobody cares.

This 15 mph on ebikes is complete madness. Plenty of pushbikes with a reasonably fit rider can easily get up around 30 mph on the level. My son has a 1000w 48v rear hub MX02s and on the level he cycles with no power a lot of the time. Often touches 30 mph plus by using his 21 speeds. He is running an oversize 58 tooth front chainring. Taking off on level he’s in first gear on back sprocket think it’s a 34 tooth so as speed builds he changes up. His only issue is coming to a sudden stop leaves him in too high a gear to start off so he will turn on power to get him going and change down at same time then kill the power when his gears match his speed. Told me recently he’s had to slow down because of the number of motorists pacing him in next lane trying to figure out his bike. I have to use a blip of throttle to get moving but then rely on pedal assistance if and when eventually Ireland brings out laws it will probably ban any type of throttle but I’m hoping like the 6 mph walk assist I can build some kind of push button that will give me throttle up to say 10 mph and police won’t notice.

Debatable on the throttle, they are not legal on manufactured e-bikes made after 2016 but converting a bike is not so cut and dry, The DVLA said they wouldn't consider it a powered vehicle so long as it's 250w with pedal assist. They also said however that it might need to be tested in court at some point to get a solid answer. I'll be using a throttle on my 250w mid drive conversion.

We purchased this Vivi 27.5” electric bike and a Tentaquil 26” electric bike for our 13 and 14 year olds. kzbin.infoUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ The Vivi was much easier to put together. With the Vivi, there was a video link to assist with assembly which made the process easier to follow (we did put the handlebars on upside down, but it was a quick and easy fix). With the Tentaquil, the assembly was not as simple to follow, but after we messaged the company for an assembly video, it was easier and they did respond quickly. The other major differences were that the Vivi has a grip throttle on the right handle (like a motorcycle) and the Tentaquil has a push throttle that you use your thumb to activate. The monitors were also different, so if you’re looking for something specific in terms of changing the bikes functions, pay attention to what the monitor offers. We were really impressed with the overall quality and functionality of both bikes, but if you’re looking for more power and an easier assembly, definitely go with the Vivi!
