One thing I can't stand about Netflix is that every category labeled "trending, popular, critically acclaimed ", are all Netflix originals. My favorite part of streaming services is the part where intellectual property exists, so instead of content being available on all the places and they compete for who can show it all for the cheapest price, they get to have mini-monopolies and make you pay for multiple services. Streaming was good when Netflix was the only one BECAUSE they were the only one. They've done a good job pivoting to making originals, and monopoly control isn't the answer, but now we get all the inconvenience of competing monopolies and none of the advantages the one-stop shop that was Netflix used to provide

What worries me is we're going to have another "cable" issue, where so many services get split all over the place. and then eventually a service will come along that combines them and all of a sudden, now it's the new "cable" where you pay for tons of shows, with tons of ads, for a "bundle" package just like how cable has been.

@L. Ron Hoyabembe yeah but that's what I'm getting at. Like Eddy said with Netflix having too many options, you may want to go to another streaming service that could have what you want, but then if you have shows mixed around on different platforms you have to pay for the inconvenience of more than one service as you switch around if you want the shows from them. So I'm just projecting and assuming that eventually, you'll get to the point where's theres bundled services that cost alot to have the shows you want wrapped in with a bunch of stuff you don't want. So basically similar to what you literally just described about cable.

The worst part of streaming services, undoubtadly: content monopoly The different streaming services we have now almost never overlap in content, aka you have to go to a specific one to get said content (like, The Office or whatever), AKA, the services don't actually have to improve, since no competing streaming service exists that provides that content, and you can only go to them Which is why more people have gone back to pirating
@Flameclaw1234 жыл бұрын
That and there are SO many different streaming services now, if you wanted to pay for access to all of them you'd be spending practically as much as cable. When the options were Netflix and Hulu, which were like $20 a month total, everyone had them because it was so cheap, and chances were the show you wanted to watch was on one or the other. It was more convenient than pirating so people just paid. Now it's so expensive to pay for a dozen different streaming services, even if you just want to watch one or two shows at a time, it's worth the effort to pirate just to avoid spending the money. Ironically, 'content monopoly' and 'too many options' not only coexist as issues with streaming services, they work together to have an worse effect when combined

My ex wanted to watch a show she grew up with, also on Amazon, but you had to get *a separate subscription inside Amazon Video* with some bumfuck nothing company to watch it. I wanted to watch the film "Downfall" a while back but it was "unavailable in your country" every single place I looked. I wasted like a half hour trying to find a way to rent it.. and ended up just pirating it five minutes later. For example, I no longer want to see Young Sheldon in searches or recommendations, so I "hide" it. - A setting to turn off "Are you still watching?" It's good for people who leave the room or fall asleep, but I really do watch 10 hours of content in one sitting sometimes and I don't want Netflix to judge me anymore lmao. - A setting to turn off autoplay for a different show or movie. As a fellow Canadian myself I agree, not having Hulu available sucks sometimes when I'm actually interested in stuff they have. I learned recently that the majority of stuff on Hulu is actually available to watch in Canada, but it's spread across different services. For example, Hulu originals can be found on Amazon Prime, CBC Gem and Crave, while the shows and movies they have the streaming rights to can be found on those services as well as Bell Canada's (TV provider) on-demand. Just thought that might be helpful to you :)

The other day I wanted to watch all of the Halloween episodes of Bob's Burgers and it was so tedious to have to go through each individual season and find the one episode I wanted to watch every time I finished the one I was watching, and it would've been so nice to just put a list together and let it play. Even if they couldn't do user-generated playlists it'd be nice if some shows could have a "greatest hits" type playlist to watch instead of only having the shows in season/episode order, especially for shows that I think are overall pretty hit-or-miss but the good episodes are really good

Disney+ UI does need some work, at least in the areas that you gave as examples of, but you cannot deny that the way they sort content by brand with those clean logos that animate when you hover over them on the main menu is just BEAUTIFUL.

It's a little odd to me that you say "We all know Hulu" when I really don't know Hulu because it's not available in the UK. Also, I feel you missed an important point for Prime with the xray feature. It's just so good for quality of life and extra interesting tidbits.

I wonder what percent of his demographic is in the UK...

Yeah the X-ray feature is cool but i wish i could disable it from automatically showing me the X-ray stuff when the HUD is on, especially the timestamped trivia part of it, because sometimes it spoils things that are about to happen. And because it can get in the way of what youre watching. It's nice that it has the songs and actors and everything right there for you though. Idk if it even does that on TVs or computers, but it does it on my iPad and it's super annoying.

@@xant8344 That sounds pretty rough. I've never used it on a tablet but i watch a lot of stuff on PC and it's not usually an issue. I guess having a smaller screen can make it more annoying

Yea in general this was very America-centric... HBO is also USA only afaik, and the tv channels' streaming services aren't really a thing outside the states bc those are American channels?? It'd be like my Canadian ass talking about CBC Gem or Crave and acting like everyone would be familiar with it...

You forgot to mention that Hulu is literally the only streaming service that has an EXPIRING section. Edit: im actually glad this aged like milk lol

On an old fire stick my hulus tts turned on and I couldn’t turn it off anywhere, so when you opened hulu it was the most annoying shit, and the ads were even worse. It was always such a jumpscare cuz it was only hulu
