One of my HS bullies approached me a year ago at the gym and he genuinely apologized to what he did to me and asked me if we can turn a new page and be gym buddies. My answer was : thank you for the apology, please don't talk to me again. He immediately left and never showed his face at the gym.

Honestly I don't think that was at all what was happening. From her story, he didn't want to tell her, but she pressed (as she should) and he provided an awnser. I hardly feel like he tried to use it as a cop-out or hail Mary asking her out going by OP's story. I think the guy might genuinly feel bad as he definitely should.

I mean, she said the bullying happened around when they were preteens. kids don't know how to express romantic feelings they tease (and in this case bully) just for some interaction. it's world's different from a cold manipulator beating and stalking his wife because he "loves her" one is ignorance, one is deliberate cruel control.

There’s a zero percent chance that his “helping Bob” excuse is true. His wife is in the hospital and his four year old child is home alone with a babysitter, and he decides to not go home all night, and then just go to work the next day, never going home to check on his daughter or even calling his wife to see if she would be discharged to go home to their daughter? There’s no chance that story is true, no chance. It’s just ludicrous.

Hard disagree with the comment on the first story saying they were close to saying OP was the AH cause she continued to talk to him. It sounded way more to me she never sought him out and was just polite to him whenever he went to talk to her. It’s an awkward situation to deal with and I wouldn’t be surprised if OP was trying to be as non confrontational as possible and allow her former bully to interact with her in what I honestly perceived based on her descriptions as one-sided conversations

Maybe, but it's possible he's just an ahole. Yeah, that was awful. OP was not an AH for being the bigger person and trying to be polite and non-confrontational in public as she would to any other stranger. He was the AH for continually seeking her out and trying to talk to her, when it sounds like he did all the talking and paid very little actual attention to her as a person. He ignored all the signs she was busy, didn't want his help, didn't want to talk to him, etc. Thomas was selfish and stupid throughout the whole story and OP tried to be a decent person, but when he kept imposing his unwanted presence on her she finally had to be rude because he wasn't getting the message. He refused to see anything beyond his own dick until she finally got fed up and had to spell it out for him.

I was bullied by one girl in elementary, but the rest of the class followed along, except for like...2 people who WERE my friends. Well, we went to different middles and beginning of high schools. Until around Sophmore or Junior year, and then 2 of them came to my school. Bully ignored me (literally, we had one class together, she didnt say a single word to me), but seemed shocked when she saw me and I just smiled at her. Another gal from the same class, who didn't really do much to me, but didnt help either. Came up to me in the hallway one day.. Shes like "Are you So-So from School?" "Yeah...Why?" Her: "Im X from same school, we had a class together, and I just wanted to apologize for anything I did back then." "You literally did nothing, its alright, but thank you for apologizing :) " She was friends with Bully back then, and I dont know if they still were or if Bully pushed her out or whatever happened...But I was just happy someone saw how I was treated back them and felt bad...Some people CAN change, but only if they want to change. 99% of the time though, they dont.

First story before the update: NTA, apparently OP’s roommate is also “dumb as 💩” as well if she thinks harshly rejecting the guy who bullied her throughout middle school and half of high school makes her an @$$. Victims aren’t required to forgive and make amends with their former bullies, especially ones that didn’t even properly apologize. After the update: Still NTA. I know the whole “bully and their victim becoming lovers” is a popular sub-trope of the enemies-to-lovers trope and when done right it, it feels natural. But that’s fiction and this is real life. Thomas admitting he bullied Op for so long because he had a crush on her is a MASSIVE red flag. It screams “because I used mental violence towards you to get you to like me, I’ll also use the same sort of violence to make you stay in a relationship with me”. Good on OP for having none of Thomas’s bs and hopefully he’ll stay away.

She was sent to HOSPITAL and all he could say was “lol no hanging with my bro”. I’m wondering if his best bro is actually his affair partner, worth looking into as he puts his friend above his wife and child, that or his best bro is fully aware of an affair and covering for him. Maybe Thomas has really changed, but I sincerely doubt it; I'm also guessing he was used to being the big fish in the small pond and having people hang out/fawn over him all the time in HS, and now that he's in the big world people dgaf about him and no one knows/idolizes him, which is why he defaulted to talking to the first familiar face he could find, even if that face (rightfully) despises him. Story 1- OP is NTA at all. She wasn't giving Thomas hope by talking to him- she was being polite and he was the one who kept seeking her out. It also sounds like he did most of the talking and barely paid attention to whether she was interested or not. And then he had the nerve to interrupt her workout and offer his "help" that she never asked for! When she initially turned him down she was polite, but he still kept pushing. Of course she finally snapped, he was asking for it! Dude, take a hint! There were so many of them, lol! She shouldn't have to apologize for telling him off after he refused to take a polite "no" for an answer and go away! Good for him for trying to be better, but he needs to go and be better to other people and leave OP alone. He was only being nice to her because he really thought he could get a date with OP. And to me he didn't seem all that nice, just pushy and obnoxious. OP tried all the polite ways she could to show she wasn't interested BEFORE she finally had to snap at him. He might not be a bully anymore but he's still a selfish ass, and a complete idiot. Update: Yeah, Thomas is still a jerk. He was still trying to get OP to give him a chance. He was STILL imposing his presence on her after he knew she hated him. He should not STILL have been shocked at her anger, especially after that long speech about how sorry he was and how bad he was back then. What a dick. He keeps saying how bad he was and how sorry he is not because he is actually that sorry, but because he still wants OP to sleep with him at some point. Gross. Hope he finally gets the message. If he tries to talk to OP again, she should just walk away.

He was honestly surprised that his charm didn't phase me, or win him any points with me. It was appalling.

Obviously he was an an AH when he was actively bullying you and no you do not bully anyone let alone someone you are attracted too (unless maybe you are 5 and grew up in a repressive misogynistic household).

I had a former bully who I found out later liked me. we would butt heads, he'd call me names, and all sorts of nasty things. He then left school one day and I thought I never see him again. Then later in highschool he showed back up. He even changed his name (not trans) and tried talking to me when he saw me playing on my DS at lunch. I was never rude to him, but by my actions he clearly got the message that there was *never* going to be anything between us; friends or relationship. This trope boys have created (and one fueled by adults) needs to come to an end. teach your sons to not treat people they have feelings for like crap. Heck, that shouldn't just apply to people you like. Just be nice to everyone; at the very least polite

OP your bully deserves being roasted to hell and back, he harassed you, bullied you, was constantly horrible to you, was incredibly hurtful towards you, and now he wants to constantly push and talk to you like he never treated you horrendously, acts like he’s your friend and didn’t ever acknowledge the harm he’s caused you. He deserved being dragged to hell and back, he is so unaware of the harm he’s caused to you and doesn’t seem to care about how his bullying has damaged you. He NEVER apologised to you and after pushing and pushing you snapped, your roommate telling you that you were mean is a muppet, he deserved being told straight up to his face and he needs to see the damage he actually caused.

As a former fifth grade teacher… my first response was that in middle school he totally had a crush on her because what little boy knows how to deal with liking a girl. He gets old enough to realize he’s not doing himself any favors and changed. I’m not sure how bad the bullying truly was, but I’ve seen boys in early puberty be pretty nasty to the girls and when confronted about it they tried to “ask the girl out”, it never ended well. I was not surprised in the least when she found out he’s always liked her.

Story 1 - something similar happened to me a few years back. For context: she never apologized because I suspect she thinks that I'm the unreasonable one to misunderstand her intentions. I was bullied in HS by this one girl. Then I've met her casually while I was out shopping, and we talked for a bit. She asked me if I wanted to go to the concert with her when I tried to end the conversation. I bluntly said NO because I wasn't interested in even being her friend at that point. She of course was shocked and appalled that I had to be so rude about it. I asked her what did she think would be my answer, considering I didn't want anything to do with her after how she treated me in HS. Her answer? "It's because I liked you, you idiot". Yeah, she liked me so much, my backpack being thrown in the toilet was a weekly ritual for her. I told her she was a psychopath if she thought doing things like trying to push me down the stairs or throwing mud at me was a reasonable course of action to express how much she liked me.

Story 1: I was bullied a lot in high school (all verbal except this particular bully stole my ipod one year) and at graduation and afterward, most of them acted like they had no idea they were a-holes. One of the girl bullies was like "lots of the boys liked you," and then she and one other girl all but said that my closed off-ness kept people from talking to me. Like it was my fault i was closed off. The girl who stole my ipod saw me at a Sonic in a town I lived in, got out of her car to come and speak to me and had a surprise Pikachu face when I immediately left after I got my order, just rolling up my window and driving off. I wouldn't even p!ss on my bullies if they were on fire. And they will go all their lives not realizing just how shitty they are. How scarring they are. I was hounded and berated into being a near mute during school hours that when a boy from my high school saw me having fun at a bar, he looked at me like I was an alien. Bullies don't get it even if they think they're sorry.

Story two: kinda beside the point, but I think OP’s doctors are huge AHs. ‘Nothing’ wrong with reproductive organs doesn’t mean there isn’t anything wrong. Needing a blood transfusion bc you’re hemorrhaging is BAD! They can’t go through that every month, and to let that happen is failing the Hippocratic oath. OP 1 is classless and bitter. Yes he bullied her by her perspective but she also said 1. She heard he matured and turned over a new leaf 2. Kept engaging with him over SEVERAL weeks 3. At no single point did she raise her confusion, concern or boundary over those several weeks 3. When he tried to deepen the friendship she brutally insulted him (sounds familiar) Instead of putting a firm boundary in place .. not this "now isn't a good time" crap. So yes she is the AH. Omg and he apologised in year 11!! Yyp

The woman who went to the hospital and her husband did not support her or show up at the hospital. Abandoned her for the flimsy excuse that his buddy,*Bob" had a greater need than his wife that Bob's family emergency superseded the husband attending to his hospitalized wife. This is what I think, I think this woman's husband and Bob are lovers. I don't think there's another woman. I think she's doesn't have another woman problem. I think she has a bob problem and I think her husband is bobbing and weaving. Maybe when he married her he thought he was straight. He has since slid into being bisexual and frankly I think he's in love with Bob. Oh well. Better to know now and have another kid with a husband like that. Dump his fking ass. I found it interesting that when she confronted her husband he didn't give her any arguments whatsoever because something is definitely up whether it's another woman or it's. Bob, it's more than meets the eye and she is well rid of him. When her divorce attorney gets on Bob's ass, perhaps she could hire detective just to find out what the heck is really going on. A lot of states in the United States have no fault divorce. I don't know if that's the same situation throughout the entire country or the world, but it would be interesting for her to find out what the heck happened. I know I'd want to know.

The thing is boys DO bully girls they like because they quite literally don't know how to express themselves, but it runs the whole gamut. They'll be just as nice as they are mean, and as they get older they'll realize what kind of cringe behavior they were expressing and profusely apologize if given the chance assuming no one had told them by that point how their actions/attitude were bad and needed to stop. So it's understandable but it comes with a HUGE asterisk.

The and then wanted to date her when they were in college is really something else. As it was pointed out, he also bullied her friends so I don't think he wants to date all of her friends. I imagine some of her friends were even guys that was not made clear though. So his reason for bullying her was because he liked her? Really, REALLY? So if she was stupid enough to get involved with this character when he started beating her up, it would mean he was madly in love with her. Still clear this misogynistic asshole. Even if he's had an apocryphal revelation that ship sailed a long time ago. Take his lessons that he learned and try it on another gullible more than likely victim.

Story 1; I'm not saying OP should have reacted any differently at all, but the comments are a little weird after the update. Seems pretty clear to me that he wasn't trying to justify his actions at all with what he said, just explain them to answer her question. Again, OP has every right to still be hurt and maintain distance, but the comments make it sound like he's some kind of snake who felt entitled to a date or forgiveness, when in reality, he seems to be doing everything right as of now; apologize sincerely, answer questions, and respect the wishes of your victim. He didn't push more for a date or friendship, or snap at her...hell, he even thanked her for the amount of grace he'd gotten so far. All former bullies should be that self-aware, and I applaud the person he's becoming, even if I hate the person he was.
