You can always take the samples of the water yourself and take it to someone. There are private entities that support environmental efforts that can look into it and they have a LOT more pull with the bureaucrats than a single person does. If you do take samples, make sure you document it all, time, date and place.

Good grief. You try to do the right thing and get drowned in bureaucracy and people who can't be bothered to do their jobs. "Oh...did you try the EPA?" EPA -> "Oh, did you use the complaint line?" Complaint line -> "Oh, you need to send in an official inquiry email form." We need to shut down all the alphabet agencies and start over at this point. None of them work to serve the people in any capacity.

You could probably use your social media presence, video evidence and a privately tested water sample to get some movement on this pretty quickly. Get a sample at the source and further down the creek where it sits stagnant and send it to lab.
@placidpaddler

You did the right thing. I would have done the same. One tip: you can pick up municipal water testing sample tubes even though they are meant for home water supply or well water. If you sent a sample from the creek they’d detect what may have been dumped there.

That looks a lot like the situation at my local creek from a few years ago. It turned out that a local farmer upstream dumped a large quantity of unused pesticide. It gave the water a white hue and killed everything for the season. The fish came back the next season to some extent but it took 3-4 years to fully recover.

Years ago there was a guy they called "the Fox". He poured concrete in drains and stopped up pipes with logs and other things. The Fox was anonymous for many years, even as he wrote letters to the politicians of the area, newspapers and CEO's of the company's that were polluting. He was a hero that was responsible for spearheading the clean up of the Fox river in northern IL. My fathers friend Foxy has been gone for many years, but I always remember him when I see this kind of thing. When We The People take action, things will change...

I've ran into similar issues with questionable water quality when I go on similar fishing excursions in Mn & Wi. The Minnesota river in particular is bad and there are a lot of old businesses/plants that dump dirty water into the river and in one stretch not far from Minneapolis you can drive through it in a boat and the prop churns up a lot of foam that smells just like laundry detergent and the smell gets so bad that it's hard to stay and fish the area. When contacting the EPA and similar state agency I find that these old businesses were grandfathered-in at some point and can keep doing it until they shut down or do enough building or remodeling that it is considered a new business and new permits have to be issued. The place I mentioned, I first noticed about 20 years ago and it is still the same disgusting soapy water. But despite the pollution, that stretch somehow produces trophy walleyes, smallmouth, and catfish on a regular basis. Also you can search through the EPA's and your states environmental agency websites to find databases with this info, usually also with precise coordinates of the pipes dumping in. He might be able to do the same for this stream to find out what and why.

Last summer we had a sewage spill into our SD River which flows into an estuary before reaching a popular beach. I called it in and the person transferred me and the following respondent wanted to transfer me as well. I carefully explained that this is why the general public is distrustful and frustrated with our government. She eventually took down all the information to forward to the proper department. She actually wanted me to go track down WHERE the sewage leak was coming from. I contacted the local volunteers group (SDRP) that had a cleanup planned the next day, a Saturday, and they called the right people AND even gave a follow up phone call and email. The sewage spill was 2 miles away up on the hill overlooking the river. The spill killed all the fish in about 1.5m. The following week it rained and carried the contaminated water further down stream and killed off the remaining freashwater fish. It has been almost a yr now and the freshwater species have yet to return; it is just hundreds of turtles and crayfish.

Government agencies for you. Gov: "There's a formal complaint line that will come directly to us. I'll give it to you..." Citizen: "But I'm talking to you right now..."

If the treatment facility uses chlorine for disinfection, its likely overdosing of chlorine could have killed the fish. Particularly since that is a slow moving creek. The milky looking turbidity also indicates something is not normal. There are many other reasons for poor water quality as well.

Maybe that spillway was crappy because it dried up and the water was stagnant. Fish dont stay where no food is. Not everything is pollution .

Didn't sound like the alphabet agencies were to concerned with it, and if the DNR was doing their job they would have already known about it.

That was an excellent storyline. Outstanding B-roll angles and clarity. Very well done, especially taking the important step for making the outdoors a cleaner place for everyone. Can’t wait to watch and enjoy more.

We are having a water quality issue here where I live. There's a meat packing company that wants to dump 350,000 gallons of production waste water daily into the creeks and river that feed the lake I live on. I know what kind of bureaucracy you are dealing with dealing with this issue.

They put signs up "No swimming" along a local creek to me "Indian Creek". It runs into South Fork then into Catawba River here in North Carolina.

A while back a few lake that feed some creeks were so low, due to little or no rain for a long while, they stopped flowing over the dams . And it caused an algae to grow and killed tons of fish. Once the rains came back it washed most of the algae out but the damage is done.

Went through something similar as a kid. We were wading a mile or two up and down a local creek and we all recieved chemical burns in a 2 to 3 inch band around our legs. It was reported and the probable source was found but during the night after we reported it there was a large storm that flushed out the creek and the storm water where it was believed the contamination came from. By the time they took samples they found nothing. We all had definite chemical burns which took a few weeks to totally disappear.

Wow that is really concerning. I luckily havnt noticed anything like that from this trip out there, but that’s unfortunate that they never found the cause at your spot

Take a sample to the extension service and have a private water test done. They will do Bacteriological tests, Mineral tests, Organic chemicals, Other tests may be conducted on radiological contaminants (radium and radon) or heavy metals (such as arsenic, mercury, lead or cadmium) based on the suspected natural and anthropogenic (man-made) sources of such contaminants.

You can also notify wildlife and fisheries. Tell them there are a lot of dead fish all over the banks and youve noticed theres no fish in the creek and it wasnt that way last time you fished there. They will go investigate. Ive done that here in my state.
