Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

We've been raising seed beans for a long time. The whole process is very strict. Something must have happened to the seed after it left the seed conditioner. Most likely snow or rain got into the post-cleaning storage bin. Whoever is storing clean soybean seed should visually inspected the bins as planting time neared. It's shocking that high priced soybeans would be dumped on the ground. The feed, oil and biofuel end user has a zero tolerance for treated seed, so that is the quickest. Even if this load wasn't treated, the planter or seed tender might have a few treated seeds and that would be a big problem. If we have leftover seed that is not in the original package, we mix it in the cover crop seed.

Zach, I understand how you felt getting a service call for a tail lamp. I'm a former Deere service tech and I've seen a number of "easy" issues. More than once I've checked machines because they won't even crank over. I put them in park and they started right up. Other times the engine would not speed up past a certain RPM. Once it was "cab trash" (soda/beer cans, snack packages) stuck under the foot accelerator pedal and once a log chain under the pedal. There are lots of unusual reasons for a farmer's woes. That issue with the rotten seed would drive me nuts, equipment issues are one thing, but something like this is the kind of thing that just drives a guy insane. I thought you normally got your beans in pro-boxes like your corn seed, I am assuming these came from the co-op at a better cost? Keep up the great work and stay safe.

Gotta make one wonder how the germination rate will be on those beans. Even with treatment, there’s a substantial probability they’ll rot in the ground instead of germinating? ? ? ? ?

@@Lightning613nah it should be fine. Like others have said it got wet somewhere. Causes headaches on these high speed planters but shouldn’t be an issue if and when you can get it in the ground. The planter is doing its job. I think going to the co-op and returning the seed for cleaning is a win win. Some loss but nothing feeding the deer. The planter a diffrent story . Trust me DEF DPF and EGR on diesel engines are the WORST thing the EPA ever freaking did to them. Prior to those mandated systems it was nothing for an OTR engine to run over 1 million miles BEFORE needing any major engine work like an overhaul on an average basis. Nowadays since these systems were mandated anyone that gets over 600K on his engine is starting to go WHEN IS IT GOING TO BLOW UP IN MY FACE. The majority of the problems are in the EGR coolers that get sandblasted by soot and convert the very minute amounts of Sulphur found in the fuel into SO4 or sulphuric acid which over time will even dissolve stainless steel and when it does you get oil and coolant mixing and BANG you have mayo in your cooling and lube systems of your engine.

@haroldbenton979
@haroldbenton979 Жыл бұрын
@Paul Copeland the actual amount of CO2 reduced and other emissions are less than .01 gram per hour since those systems were mandated. What's worse is that these engines equipped with these things actually get worse fuel economy than the older ones. I have quite a few friends in the OTR industry that bought glider kits when they could. They put in a pre EGR engine into a modern aerodynamic truck. They're getting over 10 mpg. These modern engines might break 6 if you're lucky. I was getting 8 mpg or better in 2000 with a testbed Detroit that development was canceled on when the EPA decided that 12 years was way to long to get ready and decided that they needed to make it 6 years. Learn about history read about how the EPA has a history of declaring without proof entire industries engines are cheating threatening to withdraw production certificates from their respective manufacturers unless they agree to make mandatory changes in a consent decree that can't be challenged in court. They did it to all the OTR industry engine makers in 98. Volkswagen in 00s.
