I was super impressed that they got the Ahsoka silhouette spot on. The animated characters have very defined shapes that don't really correspond with their live-action counterparts (think Dooku, for example). But this younger Ahsoka silhouette is 100% the same in animation and live-action. That's pretty impressive.

IMO, I think that very last arc in the last season of TCW is some of the best SW ever written and filmed. The fight with Maul, the Rex/Ashoka relationship, the battle on Mandalore, how it coincided with ROS, order 66 playing out, the downed ship, the burial of all the clone troopers, Kiner’s excellent music, and the last shot of Vader. For animation, it is brilliant. The animation is on another level but the shots( the glass breaking just before Ashoka and Maul fight and that shot of Ashoka standing above Mandalore on the beam looking through that cracked glass) rival some of the best shots of a live action movie. Like the narrator states, I, too often wondered how things would have played out if Ashoka had accepted Maul’s offer.

One aspect of this episode I've seen people touch on but not fully explore is how the first flashback recontextualize the Jedi Order and the inevitability of Vader. Having the scenes played out by real actors rather than animation really showed how young Ahsoka was and that by modern standards she should never have been a part of the war, or let alone be a commander. It stands to reason then that a faction willing to use such methods would intentionally or inadvertently create a monster such as Vader. When Anakin walks away and we for a moment see him turn into Vader it confirms this idea to me, and recontextualizes him as a monster of the Jedi's own making. I think Ahsoka at least unconsciously recognize tyhis, as these scenes are happening within her mind. The second scene has some things few have mentioned as well. It plays into her idea of her legacy being death and destruction, but in my opinion she looked more like a sith than a jedi in the second flashback, when she ruthlessly and skillfully killed the opposing mandalorians, clad in dark tones, and how she surveyed the battlefield and destruction afterwards.

The thing that to me looked crystal clear from the start is that the Jedi are the true bad guys in Star Wars. They are basically a deluded cult who think they are morally superior to everyone. Then they have this rules and detachments that keeps them from being actually good people. They help people when it suits them and when it doesn't oh well if people die they will become one with the force, as if it that is some sort of consolation prize. They actively remove babies from their families, indoctrinate them so much that they don't even care about their family, they make them fight while still being children/teenagers, they are taught not to love and not have emotions. How can they understand what it truly means to have compassion? They can't. Also, they treated Anakin very badly from the start (specially Mace Windu, which I hate with a passion) and set him up to failure. Not only were they hostile and dismissive of him and his feelings, but later in life wanted him to spy on Palpatine, who was his friend, something that goes against their own teachings. They are a bunch of hypocrites responsible by their demise due to their dogmatic and arrogant views.

The monster that was Vader was well on his way before the Jedi were ever military commanders - Anakin first put the Youngling Massacre Moves (Theoretical) into practice on Tatooine while he was supposed to be acting as a Senators's bodyguard, a fairly routine job for a guardian of peace and justice.

@@theunderdog9353 The characterisation of a race as 'savages' makes *murdering children* in revenge with your superior powers okay, does it? That's certainly never come up as an issue in the real world, and certainly not in the year this film was being made. The contention I'm responding to is that the military role that teenagers were forced into in the Clone Wars created Vader - i've no doubt at all it was Anakin's overall teatment by a cold and isolated Order, as much as Palpatine's whispers, that did that . My point is, the turn onto a dark path precedes the trauma of the Clone Wars.

I think there are different layers to Anakin's lesson, that are hard to spot, at first glance. During the flashback, Ahsoka laments over the deaths of the clone troopers. She doesn't want to lead people into battle because she fears she might lead them to their deaths. A fear that still holds true in the present. Anakin tells her that she shouldn't fear loosing people... a fear he's intimately familiar with. As we all know, Anakin's fear of loosing Padme and not being powerful enough made him susceptible to the manipulations of Sidious. Anakin doesn't want Ahsoka having those same fears. He's warning her off the path he took.
@billmcdonough3950

Minor quibble: It's not that she shouldn't have those fears... but that of course she'll have them. Every leader who isn't a sociopath has them. But she shouldn't give in to them, and shouldn't let them control her or prevent her from doing the things she knows need to be done.

@Jondiceful
@Jondiceful Жыл бұрын
Great observations! I would like to add a touch of nuance that I believe causes Ahsoka's regret surrounding her decision regarding Maul so acute. In that episode, I always felt as if Ahsoka sensed the truth of what Maul was saying, but she couldn't accept it. So she brushed it off as Maul trying to cloud her judgment as only a sith could. I compare it to when Vader tells Luke "I am your father" and Luke screams "No! That's imPOSSIBLE!" Vader tells Luke to search his feelings because he knows that Luke can sense the truth. Luke then accepts this fact and instead asks Obi-Wan "Why didn't you tell me?" I think if Ahsoka had searched her feelings, she would have accepted the truth as well. Also, no she and Maul would not have stopped Anakin from becoming Vader. If you will recall from that episode of Clone Wars, the events of Mandalore and Palpatine's final moves in swaying Anakin's loyalties were occurring simultaneously. Even if she and Maul had teamed up and made the fastest possible dash to Corriscant, they could only have arrived after Order 66 had been issued. Best case scenario, they could have stopped Anakin from massacring the younglings, though I find that unlikely given the size of the clone army he marched in with and Maul's own conflicted allegiances in such a fight. There's also great danger that Palpatine a would have sensed Maul's presence and joined the fight unquestionably resulting in the deaths of Maul and Ahsoka. And Ahsoka could not have persuaded Anakin to abandon the dark side. She couldn't have known, but if Obi-Wan and Padme had failed to persuade him, Ahsoka had no chance. Even combined the three would not have succeeded.
@davidvondoom2853
@davidvondoom2853 Жыл бұрын
I'm not so sure about that Ahsoka not standing a chance. I would argue that Anakin was closer to her than anyone else. Anakin didn't always trust Obi-Wan with things. Ahsoka knew about Anakin and Padme before Obi-Wan did and they've discussed things together that most Jedi would find taboo to talk about. Ahsoka was Anakin's closest confidant, since they were the most alike. Neither were typical Jedi, unlike Obi-wan. In fact, I often feel that when Ahsoka left the Jedi Order it was the tipping point for Anakin. It pushed him away from the Jedi and he lost his closest confidant. If he were to talk about Sidious with anyone, it would have been her. Anyone else would have judged him or scolded him, putting him on the defensive and causing him to entrench himself in his bad decision. Ahsoka would have worried for him, but be understanding and it would have helped him to see reason. I feel this is why we never get to see any prolonged interaction between Ahsoka and Vader/Anakin, because it would make too much sense for her to be the one to get through to him, but that would break the cannon of it being Luke. In addition, Anakin was always trying to set a good example for his padawan. Something that made Anakin's character in Clone Wars far superior to the bratty Anakin of the films. Absent of that responsibility, he seemed to regress in character, becoming more selfish.

Imo that battle in the world between worlds was just a metaphor for her own battle to survive. After all, she was drowning and i think this is how her subconcious tried to make her choose. She was already unconfident in her lifechoices, she felt that she abandoned Anakin and the Jedi Order. She had regrets and desired guidance, so she imagined that whole scenario with Anakin, the memories of her fights on the battlefield... and in the end her fear of becoming what Anakin became. I think by not killing Anakin, she refused to choose death and decided to live. What young Jason heard was not the actual battle in the world between worlds but Ahsokas thoughts and emotions. However, that is just how i like to see it, rather than having Anakin ascend to godhood...

Episode 5 and Anakin's lesson to Ahsoka is so amazing in so many ways. I had interpreted it as she needed to stop holding back and fight again and that in the end, she wouldn't turn to the dark side like Anakin, such as when her eyes turned red for a few seconds but she gathered herself and they returned to normal. But this idea about her reflection to her decision not to join Maul, I wonder if we see Anakin turn to Vader at the same moment Rex disappears bc Ahsoka is playing it out in her mind what would have happened if she did say yes. Anakin still would have become Vader like you said and she ends up having to fight him. So it plays out and she "wins" in this dual but is tempted to the dark side like you said, which is why her eyes turn red. So at the moment she pauses, she's realizing this was the wrong decision after all and she did make the right one. So her eyes turning normal is that realization and that she can stop blaming herself.

re: generally, you can say what you want about Lucas. Certainly, Filoni defers to him continually and acknowledges his primacy - to which I say, fine. Fine fine fine fine fine fine fine. WHATEVER. Filoni has, with all the developing of Ahsoka and the other characters, and how he has made these relationships circle back around to the original characters (like Anakin for example) is masterful and honestly, it has SAVED Start Wars as a viable franchise. Because of what he has done, IMO Star Wars is more viable, more interesting than it ever had been. re: faces Maul, this is absolutely, positively CORRECT. THAT WAS THE MOMENT OF CHANGE. Maul KNEW (of course he knew). Ahsoka was equally as confident that SHE knew - after all - had she not been with Anakin for such a long time and had every reason to think that she knew better than Maul, who had not had nearly the same intimate acquaintance with Anakin, often day on day, month on month, year on year, as she had? She must TRULY have felt that Maul was a FOOL, or at best had ulterior motives, which actually is definitely true also. Maul ultimately wanted POWER. He wants to RULE. We have already seen what happens when Maul is able to obtain followers. Typical dark side behavior. But after the experience with Maul, she realized that she didn't (and this must have been particularly grating upon her, given that was I just said about Maul is completely true, and she would have known this also) - that she had been fooled all along. Typically, when Maul, almost matter-of-factly said what he said to her, all she could do was to get mad, combative, and say is "your vision is flawed", which is embarrassing, because of course, Maul was absolutely correct. This HAD to have called her up short, so to speak. Talk about your cognitive dissonance.

Because we are dealing with an already established and closed ended storyline very poignant storylines and stories of internal reflection and struggle will always end up saying "it was going to happen no matter what". Since the original trilogy Anakin's fate was sealed. To go back in, in any capacity, for any reason and change it because originally it is sad or tragic does an injustice to the overall and original story. However, character studies in any of these characters, but Ahsoka in particular is great character exploration and is great fun as a fan to watch unfold. Throughout our lives we all deal with 'would'a, could'a, should'a' moments. We all have regrets and question the outcome if we had made different choices. This is just simply good writing.

I'm 38 and have been married for over 12 years. I've learned what it comes down to is blunt honesty with the person you are with. I'm a retired combat engineer and am the more rough around the neck type person. My wife is a teacher and has a male coworker that she is great friends with and they text often. I don't have an issue with it because she is honest about it and I know that if I ever want to know what they are talking about I can ask her or I can look myself. She knows just like I do what we consider crossing the line and know what the consequences are depending on what it is.

The aspect of Anakin going white and red reminds me of the offer made to him to replace the father and bring balance to the force. He didn't do it while alive, but in the after life, can it be that he is taking on the mantle of the Father - although there is the need of the son and the daughter - or maybe he is all that is required. Thus his changing from Anakin to Darth as his frustration grows with Ahsoka. Just a thought.

The role of the Father was to maintain balance between the Son and the Daughter. Now that both are dead (we presume the Son is dead even though he wasn't killed with the Mortis dagger), there is no need for the balancing influence of the Father. Anakin doesn't take on the mantle of the Father. Instead, he's the "Chosen One" who is to bring balance to the force (something the Father never could do, for if he could there would be no need for a Chosen One).

That's a sliding door moment & yes, I think one of the MOST pivotal moments of Ahsoka's life. Could she have teamed up with Darth Maul & prevented Order 66? Equally, it is just as likely that Maul would have turned on Ahsoka when she wasn't expecting it or she may have turned to the Dark Side-by association with Maul. Whatever her reasons, I assume Ahsoka was wise enough not to completely trust in Maul.

Everything is predicated towards the outcome needed for Anakin going to the Dark Side. It's never going to change because that's the story and everything needed to be taken that way in clone wars and removing these characters away from the original Star Wars characters to let that happen. There are points through the clone wars where a what if series could originate from and these and you could come up with multiple different outcomes for each of these points.

I am not sure Hera actually heard the battle herself (her son Jacen certainly did. He is definitely force sensitive). That scene isn't clear. She might have when he told her to listen. Her facial expression doesn't indicate either way. I would have thought her eyes would have widened more if she had, or she would have exclaimed something, but she may just be good at hiding her feelings. Or she may have heard nothing but she trusts her son. She has had previous experience with force sensitives after all.

There’s two main problems with Ahsoka: 1. This series was really made for fanboys of the animated series as evidenced by there not being any character development. Mostly everything is assumed, so viewers like me (who are Star Wars fans but have never seen ANY of the animated series) aren’t impressed with most of the action and at times look at most of each episode as being pedestrian at best. 2. Having so many animated series and somehow condensing them into 8-24 episodes, a lot of action and/or context will have to be left out. Meaning, much of the plots or sub-plots will have to be inferred. Also, I hope the writing improves. Dialogue has been very basic Nd slowly metered.

People forget that Rex is also a kid. The clones were commissioned 10 years before the Clone Wars so Rex is less than 10 years old. Sure he has the training of a soldier, but everything he goes through and experiences is a first time for him. Just like Ahsoka. It's part of the reason they became so close and like brother and sister.

Been exploring Mongols a lot recently & my comparison would be Ahsoka & Rex are to Anakin what Chebe & Subudei are to Genghis Khan. OG Trilogy is following the son & Prequels follow Anakin both through R2's perspective, Clone Wars is Ahsoka & Rex' perspective.

Even if she had decided otherwise there’s no way they’d get to Coruscant and stop Vader in time before he sacked the temple. Not only would they have had to bring Mauls entire fleet, battle past the defenses of Coruscant, then confront and defeat Vader and the 501st troopers together. They would have been too late even if they arrived in force.

That is one of the restrictions of many of these possible scenarios. I remember when she chose not to say anything to the Council about Maul’s theories. Even Rex stated you didn’t say anything about Maul. While this type of storytelling was brilliant and interesting and gives us many ‘what if’ scenarios, we know these are after the fact because 1-6 were already completed and established as canon and couldn’t be done. Even the entire story of Ashoka, although a brilliant character in both CW and Rebels, has limitations because she actually isn’t canon in the live action trilogies. It sucks because we would have gotten a different Anakin in the prequel movies. Another poster in this chat brought up a good point in that how in the CW their interactions were and had to be limited because their relationship could have broken canon already established in 1-6. I always looked 1-6 being a completed puzzle and CW and Rebels just adding additional context to this already brilliant, completed story, puzzle.

0:13 here is literally one of the soldiers from Maul’s Mandalorian death watch collective. So she does encounter Maul’s influence in her flashback. Maul survived Clone Wars and was killed by Obi Wan in Rebels so I have no idea what you are going on about. I seem to recall Ahsoka encounters Maul and Vader in Rebels.

It is absolutely wrong thinking on Ahsoka's side. Annakin murdered Amidala to save Amidala, if that couldn't change him nothing else would. I think it's in the nature of most jedi to always wonder if they could have done more, save more. This I think is the true Jedi; those who don't care who or how many they save aren't; those who throw themselves head-first into the Darkside aren't. It's the Jedi who always push themselves harder to do more, save more, who are the true Jedi.
