52 years here and my entire life was turned upside down by a horrible betrayal from my first (now ex) wife about 12 years ago. I was fortunate enough that I was able to heal well enough to be open again and found love again with my current wife. She just had a stroke this past Feb. She is not the same so I find myself wrecked again every day. I'll echo that 100%... look after your friends. Don't waste chances. It sounds so cliche until it's viewed through the lens of tragedy. Then suddenly those mundane moments become treasured memories. Life is a process and, as my favorite author once wrote, "A process cannot be understood by stopping it. Understanding must move with the flow of the process, must join it and flow with it." I wish nothing but peace to those who are caught in the rough part of the flow. Keep scratching to find some joy... any joy... even if it's just a damn good sandwich (that was the only good thing I noticed one day in a very bleak time). But keep going and drink in joy wherever you can find it.

I've been through this type of loss four times and even got to the point of being totally hopeless and not wanting to be alive anymore a few times, but I'm still here. It's been 9 years since the last loss, which was also the farthest along (about 4 months) and most traumatizing for a lot of reasons. There will always be sad moments, grief around the anniversary of my son's birth/death (four days ago), and times when I go down the "what if" rabbit hole, but they don't consume my life anymore. If you're going through the same thing, keep hanging on. It will get better.

In back to back years, I lost my two daughters. One stillborn at 28 weeks, and one lived for 12 days. That feeling of devastation never goes away, it just hides once in a while. Year back they had a show at a music festival and I happened to just go past their stage, but their performance kept me there like I was getting pulled towards them. The energy, the overall performance by the whole band and the lead singer straight out just jumped into the crowd, joined the pit and later on climbed the pole in the middle of the crowd, jumped into the crowd while still singing ALL the time. Welcome to metalcore! Once you're hooked you're there to stay. You'll often find the concept of duality expressed in this and similar kinds of genres. Where there's darkness there's also light. Where there's pain there's also something soothing. Where there's break-down, there's also overcoming and triumph. WSS are my absolute favorite in this kind of music. Especially Sean Long's incredible and haunting guitar riffs always speak to me. Within a few seconds a guitar can scream, cry and suddenly rejoice. I'm so happy I have their music in my life for so many years now.

Hey Elizabeth! I’m a long time fan, but this is my first time commenting on one of your videos. Usually I observe quietly, but this song and video struck a serious chord with me when I first heard it and it keeps getting better and better to me. This was a brilliant reaction to a heartbreakingly magnificent song. Your level of emotion, empathy and care really shone through in this reaction. I think this might be your best reaction yet, not necessarily on the technical aspects, but on the sheer way it made you FEEL and us along with you. I left a comment a while back on another reaction to this video on another channel (Play It Again with Mike and Ginger) and Aaran Mackenzie (the bassist of the band and director of this video) responded to it, stating that he hadn’t seen anybody else “get it” as well as I had. I spoke about some background on the music video, the symbolism I picked up and my interpretation of the story it told. I took the liberty of retrieving that comment to repost here. Consider having a read through it! The comment follows below: “Great reaction guys! This was the first reaction I've seen from you and I was very impressed with how fast you guys caught on to the story of the video. While She Sleeps is some of the best modern metal out there in my opinion. Fun fact about the video: It was fully written, produced, directed, filmed and edited by the band themselves. No big fancy production crew or anything, just the band plus a few actors. This is especially impressive to me because they did so magnificently. The constant jump back and forth in time between his memories and how he's feeling is so well done. It serves to disorient the viewer, much the same as the man is feeling. Then during the more angry part where he decides to take his life and is screaming in the car, the cuts speed up drastically to indicate the state of mind he's in. His mind is running a mile a minute and he's acting without fully thinking it through. You two described it as the whirlwind of emotions, which is a very apt description in my opinion. The whole drugs motif works so well. They were both using beforehand, but when they find out she's pregnant, both stop, but she unfortunately STILL loses the baby. Whether it was due to the past drug use or other causes, we don't know, but losing a child, even an unborn one, can be absolutely heartbreaking. As so often happens, this tragedy creates a bit of a rift between them and she starts using again, overdosing in the process. I don't think she chose to take her life, but that it was rather an accident.. It emphasises the importance that baby had and how much they both already loved the baby, despite them not being born yet. They were enough to motivate the woman to quit, but losing the baby led her right back to the drugs to numb her grief and eventually led to her death. And although there was a rift between them, I genuinely believe that with enough time to grieve properly, they would've made their way back to each other, albeit with scarred hearts. All the imagery of the man sinking as he is dying, and then swimming up to the surface as he realises he doesn't want to die yet, is some of my favourite cinematography of the year. It looks much more epic than it would in reality (seen by the shot directly afterwards of him falling out of the car). It is a mental struggle he has to overcome, not a physical one, and that often times is much harder than a physical struggle, so it IS a great, epic moment when he can make that decision to not do it. The drive-in theatre is a metaphor for him looking back on all his memories. I think this is a great choice. Initially we think that is a real event he is experiencing that we are witnessing. Meanwhile, this is actually the moment his life literally flashes in front of his eyes as the car is flooding and he remembers all the happiness he had with Jenny. He realises that he doesn't want to die yet and that she wouldn't want him to either. The tragic thing about that to me was that not everyone gets that moment of realisation, or they get it too late. Him going to his (I assume) mother after the attempt is also beautiful, but unfortunately not everyone still has family/friends they can depend on for that support. Often times, they are grieving as well! A good support system is critical and I wish everybody could be guaranteed one. The emotional acting of both of the main characters without ever having to say a word is amazing. Conveying all that grief and anger, as well as happiness, euphoric joy and love for each other, all through only facial expressions and physical acting is incredibly impressive. That opening/main riff is sooooo good, it's been stuck in my head for weeks now. The switch up in vocals near the halfway point of the song is also so beautiful. Going from the clean, melodic singing into the rage-filled screams and growls as he moves on in his stages of grief is heartbreaking. This song is a bit more mellow/slower than their usual music, and because of its subject matter, I believe it was totally warranted, necessary and the right choice. I like that they made the song approachable to non-metalheads, because this is a very important topic and an absolutely beautiful song, video, and message. I view it as more of a short film than a music video. It still remains metal enough, especially with the guitar and vocals, to please those who like their metal sound.”
@HerrTerenc34 ай бұрын
It is nice to see that you are as engulfed in the video as me, but i have to make an objection. I think the scenes where the car is filling with water and him underwater are more figuratively. I think he drowns in overwhelming emotions and prepares himself with his hands to the ceiling (like an impending impact) and visual breathing (like he had trained for that or gone through it multiple times). When under water he rather quickly orientates himself and swims to the light to escape that overwhelming feeling and regain control after he went through this traumatic events again. Also the past accident doesn't seem to severe because the car was not fully submerged.

I think the idea of nothing's gonna change at all is like depression's way of talking you into ending yourself. Like, even if you consciously know that it's a lie (and god, the nonstop barrage of lies depression tells you can be so damn exhausting), even if you consciously know that the only constant is change, you can get to a point where you just don't care anymore. You don't care about any potential changes because you just want the pain to stop, to either finally find a light somewhere or just let the darkness consume you... Personally, I know all about that. I have no idea what force inside me drags the rest of me through the days. I have no idea why it does, it just does. And yeah, there's still plenty of pain, but there's also laughter, small smiles and kindnesses, stopping for a bit to be in a beautiful moment... I say this as someone whose love of their life killed herself. I've missed and mourned and tributed her in so many ways over the past 13 years, and even now I feel tears in my eyes, but there are still reasons to go on. Everyone's got their own, and I hope you find yours. 🖤

I thought I might be in for a good groove, the video however immediately gripped me by the back of the neck and took me down an emotional rollercoaster I wasn't expecting, just like when I was 6 years old flipping through cable channels late at night and happened across the original IT, at just the part where the clown persuades the kid to hop into the sewer for the paper boat. Just like that moment, this video is now imprinted in my memory. Great Musicality but also What. A. Video.

When you said 'if you're in a dark place just know, we don't want you to be gone'. That hurt in such a good way. Just the way you phrased it made me bawl my eyes out. Not to mention the subject matter of the video. Thank you for letting us know we're all loved.

You're awesome! I love the way you "feel" the music and share those feelings in all your videos! Sometimes I feel moved more by your response to the music than from the music itself, I think it's a great quality, to be able of such empathy ❤

I have loved this band for years & absolutely love this song. If you are looking for another While She Sleeps track to analyse, I highly recommend 'eye to eye' , or 'silence speaks' with Oli from BMTH

8:45 sometimes you do want to drag yourself through it again, like poking a sore in your mouth with your tongue or picking at a scab, the pain reminds you that you're alive. Sometimes feeling pain feels good because it's the only think you can feel.

Bands like WSS have done so much to help me in my journey. This was my first experience with The Charismatic Voice, and Ive now gone through most of your back catalog. Covering more WSS or similar would make my week. Cant see myself holding back from the patreon for much longer

Never expected 'While She Sleeps' to pack so much emotion... I thought this was mostly something people listened to in order to help them get 'amped-up'. Thank you Elizabeth! ❤ I'm not ashamed to say that seeing this song affect her so much made this 54-year-old get a bit teary-eyed. The only two artists that can do that (that I know of so far🙂) are Elizabeth and Natalie Merchant.

While She Sleeps have a ton of great songs/music videos, hard to recommend just one, so here goes a few: Our Legacy, Silence Speaks, Anti-Social. They played in a festival here in Brazil last weekend.

The music video certainly kept me captivated.

I JUST got this on my recommendations and I was sooooooooo excited to see you react to this!! I love the lyric 'we're all going down to the flowers' also indicates 'we're all dying and going into the ground (to the flowers)' thats very smart but also very deep. While she sleeps has haunting lyrics!!! Dopesick is an amazing song as well! Or Radical Hatred/Radical Love

This is one of my favourite bands, so glad they showed up on your radar. This is the most emotional song they made till this day. If you are exploring this band, might I recommend: "ANTI-SOCIAL", Guilty Party", and "Silence Speaks". Always a treat to see your reactions!

Had never heard of While She Sleeps. What a first impression! This remains me so much of a band I really liked from around 20 years ago; Far-Less.

Thank you sincererly, cause I loved this song, the combo between the song and the video is probably one of the best ever seen in music. Watching your video I finally achieve to cry for my past relation, ended 1 year ago, after 3 years and a half, thinking that she could be my forever and then she decided to break up. Now, I can understand that I'm in the depressive phase so, crying was all I needed right now. Life goes on. The ones that don't want you in your life, don't deserve you. Fuck them. I will shine brighter with someone better for me. So, thank you

Seen these guys live loads since 2009. Go back to some of their early stuff, Our Courage, Our Cancer, it’s written by Loz about his mum. Loz suffered with his voice around the Brainwashed album and had throat surgery. I prefer the earlier more shouty albums but also appreciate this new direction they’re taking, This is The Six 🤘🏼nothing but total respect to these guys and what they have achieved and in their own 💪🏻

I saw WSS a few months ago and it was hands down the best show I have ever been to. Not a big location or big effects but the atmosphere and the vibe in the room is like nothing I've ever felt in any other show. If ever anyone gets a chance to see these guys live I would highly recommend.

Is it just me or has Elisabeth become more emotional since the birth of her child? Don't get me wrong, I find it reassuringly beautiful how she can let her emotions run free. I wish I could do that too. Thank you so much for this great video!

Sean is such an under appreciated guitar player. Also the album doesnt deserve the stick it gets. Yes its more mainstream but the song composition/writing is a level above what it is on their heavier albums.

A powerful song from a band I've not heard from before, thank you. I have to be honest though, I normally go to James Blunt for my dose of misery. So many of his songs are written from his own experiences, which makes them even more heartbreaking. I would recommend The girl that never was, Monsters and Carry you home. All three have brought a tear to my eye at various times and I'm not the only one, I've seen reactors who have been in tears or have had to pause recording so they can pull themselves together with all three. But they are such good songs and he sings them so well. If you do listen to some of his songs, freat yourself to Paolo Nutini Iron Sky (Abbey Road live session.) Considered by some to be a masterpiece, hopefully it will cheer you up again.

Please do more While She Sleeps, they are superb in many many ways, this song showcased a lot, but lots more of their music is very uplifting and positive.

Their first album really impressed me, I'm sure you would appreciate it. They had a few albums that haven't lived up to that, but the tracks for the new album have been very cool! What this band does vocally does make them unique, the fact that so many bands members sing as well as play and they've used a choir in the past too which sets them apart.

Oh, boy. I've not heard this song and if it's wrecking Elizabeth, I'm gonna be a mess. Mental hug to you, E! [edited to fix my statement about having heard the song. I have not...although I'm starting to think I need to before watching this analysis so I'm not sobbing when it goes live.]

You once asked (fb?) us to give a piece of advice. The one I gave just came to me one night when all seemed darkest: Sometimes, life is being in a boat in a storm. The waves keep coming, pounding. All one can do is point the bow into the waves and keep the helm straight. The storm will pass. The waves will subside. Just one foot in front of the other, one day at a time. It's all I could think watching this. Good grief! Whew....

Man the song was hard hitting as someone that suffers from depression but I wasnt too bad then that hug at the end fucking killed me just exploded with tears. As someone that lost all of their support network to covid/cancer friends drifting apart right at my worst, be there for those you know are struggling. If two actors hugging can completely break me imagine what one hug from you to a family or friend can do.
