Siri's attitude with you was HILARIOUS. I look forward to these videos all year long and I was not disappointed! Definitely avoiding all of these. Narnia was/is SUCH a popular series in my area (midwest US so conservative area, unfortunately, we are working on that) and I think I read at least a couple of them but I don't remember any of them other than the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe which I remember liking but even as a kid, thinking it was a little preachy. Haven't read any of the others on this list, thankfully! I almost read The Silent Patient but luckily saw your vlog first and was like "Nope, not doing that!". lol

It’s because the church believes fantasy and magic are the work of the devil, or that they will make children believe in something else other than god and turn them away from Christianity. Either way many Christian households ban either certain fantasy works (Harry Potter is a big target) or magic all together. Some go as far as telling their kids Santa isn’t real and also the work of the devil. No I’m not joking about any of this! 😫🫠

I haven't read The Chronicles of Narnia since I was a small child, but I distinctly remember Magician's Nephew being by far my favorite, and The Last Battle being one that I despised. The Last Battle is one of my least favorite books I've ever read.

In college we learn that horror stories are often exploiting societal fears or insecurities, so I can’t help but think about what real world fear horror stories are referencing when reading. This book was so weird to me because it seemed to be playing off the fear that your husband would replace you with your daughter, and that was just weird to me.

Hehe, yes The appeal is one of my best of the year :D The worst is probably Green lights by Matthew McConoughey, The circle, The honeymoon, The lamplighters, The sanatorium, Outlander 7 (first part), The Andromeda evolution, The passage. These are the ones I finished because there was always a storyline or situation that kept me on my toes but the whole story was very boring and nothing actually happened.

My least favorite of the year was Inheritance by Christoper Paolini. The way he ended that series and how Eragon defeated the villain made me soooooooo upset. So upset to the point I will start ranting whenever that book is brought up. It felt like Christopher Paolini said, “Crap…..how am I going get them out of this one? Feelings???” Grrrrrr

i completely agree with what you said about narnia! the series holds a special place in my heart due to nostalgia (and my love of the movies), but rereading them as an adult was so disappointing. it’s a shame because the world has so much potential, but so many of the books fell flat.

See I LOVED the appeal- but it’s because I Love cosy mysteries especially told through a unique format. The whole idea is that you are sifting through the emails of these people with intern lawyers who are given the task by the head defence lawyer who is defending the person who confessed to the murder but he believes to be innocent. The idea is you solve the mystery with them. It was the perfect formula for me to enjoy it because I am a law student, and mysteries especially cosy mysteries are my favourite books to read. I completely respect your opinion but yeah just thought I’d share- in case someone reading this is similar to me and thinks they might like it

I'm a staunch anti-christian, & I still love Narnia. I have like three copies of the books, in two different languages. You can enjoy something & also point out the parts that are icky. Especially since there are far more egregious christian propaganda books out there, & something being an allegory doesn't make it propaganda. If that were the case, then sue me for putting disability propaganda in all of my works

I'd recommend skipping 10 Count as well if you don't like yaoi that's extremely problematic. The first book or so is ok but once it gets going it's just malpractice (it's about a psychologist and his patient) and dub-con/non-con all the way down

I finished the appeal and it was NOT worth finishing. I don't make worst book videos anymore but if I did that would be on it. Fifty shades of grey is not worth it at all. Another one I wish I hadn't read as well... The films are hilarious, I agree 😝 YES hated the chronicles of narnias altogether. The last book is the worst.

I haven’t read nor watched anything Fifty Shades related, but according to Dominic Noble, who read the *whole* series (the original trilogy anyway, not the Christian POV books), plus The Mister, and watched all the films, the movies really tried to elevate the source material while trying to stay faithful to them. The first film particularly did its best, hiring a director known most for artsy films (to the point where EL James hated it, even though it was still mostly faithful).

The whole The Silent Patient book is a big plot hole! The format of revealing everything through a diary (and how the hell did she find the time and calmness to sit down and write in her diary about the shit storm she'd just been through?) doesn't make sense in this case.

I adore The Witches of Eastwick movie and rage read the book a few years ago just because I wanted to know how different it was from the movie. I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever read another book by Updike because that one was just the worst! I also read the Chronicles of Narnia a looooong time ago and disliked all the religious overtone because it was so heavy-handed and I’m super not religious. I did like The Magician’s Nephew a lot though I’m not sure if I’d feel the same reading it now.

I hate when the reveal in a book is that the narrator was unreliable all along and they were the ones who really committed some act attributed to someone else. I’m fine if all along things are twisty and murky and you’re questioning the reliability of the narrator, then the reveals are interesting and in line with the rest of the book. But I hate when things seem straightforward, and you’re trying to put things together along with the narrator, and then all of sudden the book shifts and reveals what you thought you knew was a lie, because then the twists feel unearned.

It’s funny to me that Narnia feels like strong religious propaganda to some people, yes it’s obviously Christian allegory, but maybe because I was forced to read *ACTUAL* religious propaganda as a child, it seems tame to me!! Lol TCON and LOTR were the only fantasy I was allowed to read as a child, because of the Christian allegory, so I read them when I was around 8-12 and enjoyed them. Luckily I was successful in convincing my mom to let me read Harry Potter when I was 12, and after that she stopped caring about that nonsense altogether, and I spent the next decade reading mostly fantasy. I believe TCON is the only fantasy I haven’t revisited as an adult, as I don’t think it would particularly hold up, but I also don’t think it would be harmful for kids. Even as a kid raised in the church, I was more focused on the fantasy than the allegory, and it wasn’t until I was an adult and reflecting on the work as a piece of literature that those aspects became obvious. Now if you want to hear some horror stories, I can tell you about reading how women are supposed to be the moral guiding light for their husbands, and that their husband’s sins were a direct result of the wife not doing a good enough job of setting a good Christian example.

The Narnia books are in a very weird spectrum. They can go from "pretty good all things considered" to "absolutely terrible", and everything in between in regards to quality. The Horse and His Boy was the worst in my opinion, with The Last Battle in close second.

You just reminded me that I reread the Narnia chronicles in January this year and it put my mind on an instant track of how mad the reread actually made me. The blatant religious references in it drove me insane. Just stank of religious indoctrination to me. But then, I was force fed traditional Catholicism growing up, so there’s that. Haha. Not a series I’ll be encouraging my nieces and nephews to read, for sure.

Chronicles of Narnia always felt like another force feed people religion beside Golden Compass and I couldn't not see the homophobia, racism, and sexism. Like the treatment of the girls in Narnia is on par with the souls in HDM. You can't say it's gay rep anymore than Narnia is strong empowered women rep. Both always get so much praise but I can't ignore they don't do what they say they are well enough.

Did you read The Magician’s Nephew? It was my favorite of all the Narnia books growing up. That being said, its been close to two decades since I read it last and I have no idea if it holds up in the slightest. 🫣
