Great video, very informative and inspiring to go out and change my gearing. One note: be sure to shake up the tube of thread locker before use, the solids in the fluid can separate from the carrier.

Thanks for sharing, Dino! I swap my DR between a 14/43 on the highway and 13/43 for off-road. I found the 15/43 just too tall for almost everything. Actually, if I could change one thing on the DR it would be to have a much wider range transmission with a way lower first gear.

I agree. A really low first for chugging through rivers and steep rocky grades would be a big plus for the back country roads in NZ. For people in their 70s anyway. I have changed to a 14 front sprocket. It's better but still forces you to go faster than I would prefer in the rough stuff. However you still need to travel long sealed roads in the South Island at 100 kph. A real compromise. I know Nova make a wide ratio cluster but they cost a fortune. A final comment around chains and sprockets. I find the cush drive rubbers in the rear hub need careful monitoring. I have recently bought the Procycle upgraded ones. Hopefully they last longer than the Suzuki originals which only last about 15 000 km before getting very sloppy.

Dino!! Keep making DR content but I think many of us would enjoy any other type of content you make as well! You have great camera presence, a calming demeanor, and a great editing style. Try out expanding into other content too if you feel like it!

Yes Dino i would enjoy content on Carls new V Strom 650. I also have ran the 14 tooth and the 15 tooth sprocket on my DR. I like the 15 tooth for 95 percent of my riding. If i know im going into some rough areas i will put the 14 on. Also the larger front sprocket is easier on my chain it seems. As always i look forward to your videos!

Very usefel video (as usual) on sprocket change Dino. Karl's V Strom - A few years ago I flew to North Island New Zealand and hired a Suzuki DL 650 V Strom and rode around the Island for a month. The following year I shipped my own DR 650 to South Island of NZ and rode around for a month or so. I liked the V Strom for sealed roads as it is a great touring bike. It is certainly a little heavier. I would enjoy hearing Kharl's view of the V Strom relative to the DR. Cheers Mal

A 13-tooth is even better! That’s what I’ve ran for the last 10,000 miles. Including the entire TAT.

I love your videos - so calm and thorough. I just bought a DR, and the 15 tooth sprocket seemed too low to me. I set it to 14 but haven't driven it yet. Considering that I prefer the single track, I think I'll like it. Thanks for the video!

Peak torque is approx 4800 rpm so it now runs in its sweet spot. Good stuff. ✔

Hi Dino, I use my DR primarily on city streets or on fire roads. I switched to a 46 tooth rear and replaced the chain with a longer one. I swap the front sprocket between 13 and 15 depending on my mission. A word of warning, the stock chain guide will not accommodate anything larger than a 46 tooth rear sprocket. In the game of DR 650ing, it’s all about making it work for you.

Dino - hard to do a "star pattern" on 3 bolts (I'm teasing you) LOL - I always use the rubber washer on the backside of the retaining ring. For what it's worth - I have (and use) 14, 15, and 16 tooth sprockets. I love the 14 the best - as I do a lot of off-road desert riding (Glendale, AZ) - the 15 tooth is right in the middle, and works perfectly for both on-road, and off... If you are doing a ton of highway riding, the 16 tooth will still do most anything you want, but drops your RPM's by about 500 at highway speeds - and although the following is probably true for a lot of bikes, you can use any of the three sprockets I've mentioned - and the stock size chain will still work. - The best thing about THE MIGHTY SUZUKI DR 650 is, that it has so much torque, it doesn't care what sprocket you use !!!! Cheers !!!!

15/43 makes the best all round compromise. And having odd numbers of teeth on both sprockets will make your chain and sprockets last longer.

Leaving my front 15 for a bit less wear on chain on a smaller sprocket.....will go up 1 or 2 on the rear when need a change of sprockets. I had both a KLR...always looking for a sixth gear and a DR now and find myself in fourth forgetting to go to fifth ....much smoother. Final parts have arrived and will be done in a week or so. Then on to the navigation...we will talk again before that task. Garth

Well done Dino and I love Karl's new bike ! 👍 I did the same with my DR 650 running 14 front and 42 rear and it's perfect for any riding under 60 MPH as most of mine is . However I side with Suzuki as they have forgotten more about building motorcycles than most will ever know ...... The factory 15 / 42 was perfect for anyone that could ride a motorcycle .😁

I absolutely hate the chain adjuster cam on the DR. I find it to be difficult to set. I have the stock 15 tooth on my bike and run it up to 70 MPH on the freeways regularly with no perceived issues. Thanks for this video!
