I highly suspect that a lot of knife makers don’t bother doing proper heat treats because they know that most buyers don’t use their knives for anything beyond cutting paper or simply admiring. This is especially true for high dollar collectible knives - zero hard use.

Prices on Benchmade are going to need to drop shortly. I edc a Benchmade 940 in s30v and I love it but it’s not overly impressive. I got it bc it was my dream knife but for the cost to value ratio, there’s some to be desired although it’s very well built. And yes I USE my knife for edc, farm work.

I own three Benchmade knives in S30V and I have been disappointed in all of them. Right out of the box they were dull. I literally have knives that were $50 that were much sharper out of the box. They also hold an edge way better then my BM knives. I stopped carrying a Benchmade because I have never been able to get them sharp. I even took them to a professional knife maker to have him sharpen the knives. They were sharp for a couple of days of minimal use and that was it. My $50 knives with the same amount of use are sharp for a couple months. Lastly, the screws holding the clips on my Benchmade knives became loose after a few days of use. The clips fell off completely on two knives and I lost them. Thankfully the knife dropped into my pocket when the clips fell off. I contacted BM and they told me to apply Loctite to the screws. I responded with “for a $300 dollar knife I would at least expect the clips to stay on”. Thanks for the 15 degree tip. I will try it, but not holding my breath.

Its most likely a heat-treating gone wrong, yes. He should quench temper it twice, if this particular steel has a tendency to form hard carbide lumps. Also, this problem is normally affecting the very edge, where its the thinnest. After using the knife for a while, and getting into deeper layers of steel by sharpening, the chipping may stop. Or, it may also continue 😂😂 if the treat is completely out of whack

I was going to get a Mini Crooked River because they finally updated the options when I saw the 945 and that was more than $100 cheaper so I went with that. It should be in by the 31st, but Benchmades products are getting to be way way too expensive. I don’t really believe a Custom Mini Crooked River is worth the $350 I was going to pay before tax and shipping. It kinda makes me sad I may never be comfortable spending that much cash for the knife I really have wanted for several years now.

The osborne design is timeless. Even after twenty years it looks unique because every other top edc knife features a tall, thin blade and a frame lock. But then that's the opinion of someone who prefers a strong and versatile knife to something only meant to slice at which point a razor knife wins.

@@wis1024 well it’s just untrue. Like Magnacut was created for toughness and ease of sharpening. It is never chippy. It’s just the truth.
@wis102411 ай бұрын
@ericasedc That might be true for a steel designed specifically for toughness, but it's not true for ALL super steels. Most are harder and more prone to chipping than more traditional steels. That's not arguable, you dont get carbide tear out with steels that dont have carbides. They can be chippy but it would have to be heat treated to high or ground way to thin. Im just saying i dont appreciate being called a liar for sharing my experience with steels lol It is my experience that super steels in general are more chippy which seems to be a fairly common experience. I did state this is "from what i can tell," meaning in my experience. I dont mean to attack your point of view, just sharing mine.
@wis102411 ай бұрын
@ericasedc also i haven't used magnacut, but from what I've read and heard, it does seem like they are finally getting away from the hard to sharpen easy to chip trend. Which is a huge win-win for everyone. Sounds like magnacut should be the new standard.

most of my knives are cold steel knives - i have them all - everyone gets into the rotation - none cost as much as that knife you showed or has ever broken in the slightest way from cutting cardboard - i probably dont know what I'm talking about but maybe the steel is to brittle - and to thin to take real world use - like a straight razor - cuts great but cant take any hard use beyond cutting fine objects - your blade cant take impact or being twisted - you should get your money back and buy a cold steel brute and cut all the paper you want

I've seen that same chipping behavior on Benchmade and Spyderco blades on cardboard. Bad heat treatment in addition to excessive grinding. Just weak metal to begin with. It's nothing you did. But honestly for $750 it should not be doing that. When you do send it, insure it for no less than TRIPLE the value. That way if it gets lost you are going to get the $$$$.
