Author! Author! This BS goes on all the time. I have a single Mom neighbor who has a Crown Victoria Ford. The car has low mileage & she follows the proper maintenance. She came to me a month or so ago, & asked me what a pull out engine for her car would cost. I told her that I had no idea, but I would call several of the wrecking yards & find out. I asked why she was looking for an engine. The car developed a "knock:'" , & she took the car to a shop & they "checked" the car out & told her that she had a spun connecting rod, & that they could find her a pull out for $5000 or so, & that it would be about $8000 to fix the car. I sat in the car & started the engine, & sure enough there was a "knock". I told her that the knock was NOT a connecting rod, because the knock was lower pitched & had a "thud" instead of a "sharp rap" . I raised the engine RPM's from idle to about 1500 RPM & the knock was still there. I told her that I was now absolutely certain that there was no connecting rod problem I lay down beside the car & had a look under the car . I pointed to a chunk of 2X2 inch stick & pushed the stick under the car & shoved on the end of the stick. The knock instantly ceased. She was shocked, & asked me how I made the knock go away. I told that the exhaust pipe mounting bracket was bent & the pipe was vibrating against the sub frame ! We drove the car to a farm equipment repair man's shop & drove over his pit. He took his oxy-acetylene torch into the pit, , along with a pry bar & heated the bracket & moved the pipe away from the frame, & all was well. The $8000 repair became a $10 repair. BTW, I NEVER patronize ANY "Quick Lube". along with cross threading drain plugs, or breaking the boss in the pan, or not tightening the drain plug, they try to sell you a suite of other "services" ....transmission flush is the first one you can expect. Gear driven pump can leak coolant into the oil. The. Coolant surge tank holds about 3 gallon and is metal so of course I didn't know yet it was putting coolant in the oil. Checked the coolant tank. Work at one of these shops and say something about it. Had a guy tell an old lady he replaces his air filter every oil change. I told her he was lying and there was nothing wrong with her air filter. I was fired a week later. All involved have been to jail more than once I’m sure.

I kinda laughed at the oil analysis when I watched that video. He should know several oil makers use titanium as an anti-wear additive. Heck that engine sounded quieter than a '19 Outback I had with less than 65K miles.

Another win for Mr Subaru. Videos like this help us understand who’s honest and who’s not. Mr Subaru you’ve always been honest with us. I just wish I could afford all your fun tools you have. So jealous:)

That mechanical type of engine noise is very distinctive to Subaru and i loved it. Don't know anything about Daves shop but i appreciate the calling out of these ridiculous shop prices.

I dont often agree with Mr Subaru, but he is right on this one. Iam a 20 year subaru master tech and was a top 10 subaru tech in the country in 2017. These new chain motors are noisy, they all use some amount of oil and will leak. Change the oil every 3k period with 5/30 oil and keep them maintained they will run forever the cvt on the other hand is a whole other story.
@XSR9524 күн бұрын
They have a lot of good information on diesels and some other things here and there, but the quality of their videos seems to have gone off the deep end recently. Shilling garbage every single video like they're typical influencers instead of a shop first. I just want to learn shit. Perhaps the loss of the Discovery show contract made them desperate, or Discovery saw something they didn't like and dropped them. Good breakdown. I suppose I should have figured flat style engines would be different to machine than the V8's and straight 6's they're always showing off. It's always frustrating seeing other shops or even coworkers provide insane quotes for work that doesn't really need to be done.

Didn't know that deal with discovery wasn't happening anymore. Good, I'm glad. While I'm sure these guys do fine work, I don't think what I've seen is realistic, cost effective or in the best interest of their customers.

I blew the motor in my 2016 Forester 2.5. Subaru dealership quoted me around 5k for rebuild. Luckiky SOA covered some of it. Fully reman motor at 90k miles for 3200$ at a Subaru Dealership. Sounds like your numbers are spot on. Just this past summer

I think Subaru can be decent. My daughter had a brand new '14 Forester that burned up the transmission when a hose split to the cooler. Took a couple weeks but she got a new transmission. Didn't try to rebuild it.

Sounds like the FB25 in the 2021 Crosstrek loaner I had when the Subaru dealership did a header recall on my WRX. It had around 9000 miles on it. It made a similar noise around 2k rpm lol It's just how these engines sound, bud.

Thanks Absolutely I’m 70yrs. old, been working as a mechanic for 50yrs. and first show me one mechanic who can detect a wrist pin knock and second good luck with a rebuilt engine a wrist pin knock will be the least of your problems. If you actually have a severe engine issue where you need an engine buy a new one.

You are right about going up in oil viscosity. I have a 2015 Outback with 79000 miles that is noisy when it is cold like a piston slap for about a minute if I don't let it warm up a little first. I quit using 0w 20 and went to 5w 30 and it sounds a 100% better without the need for a warmup, of course depending on temperature that day.

Our “local Nissan dealer” (won’t say the name), did something to me kinda like this. I went in for an annual inspection and oil change. Of course they came back with their “if you don’t fix this right now you are going to die” list. Thousands of dollars. I said not today to the kid. Fixed it for like $200. Most of what he said was bravo sierra. That was years ago. The car is still running fine. The scary part is they (many, hopefully not all shops) are doing this to people that don’t know any better. I know they have a shop / dealership to maintain, overhead, staff to pay, etc. There is a difference in thousands of dollars and $200. There is a difference in making a profit to stay in business and BOHICA.

Agree, never not heard a noisy subaru. Although not a subaru my moms Fusion started having hard shifts, I told her as long as it keeps going forward and reverse, keep driving it till it fails. Been driving on my ford with the same issue for 116,000 miles. As long as they keep working drive it till it blows up.

You bring your car into Dave’s shop for a simple oil and filter change. He spots a tiny silvery substance in the oil…….oops, gotta’ pull the engine to see what’s up. Might need a new one. That seems to be the result of every video! I’d be scared to death to take my car there.

I switch all my Subaru's to 5w30 even from new, the 0 weight oil is only to maximize fuel economy not protect the engine

I'm a die hard Chevy guy so we know about valvetrain noise too. That was a happy ticking little Subaru motor. People think their engine should be dead silent. In the 50s, 60s, and 70s the engineers prioritized quiet engine operation. With the added complications in design aimed at improving power and economy you'll have an engine now that makes foreign noises that are normal but, the manufacturer won't educate the consumer.

They seem to be more of a diesel truck shop. Those guys are used to paying crazy money to keep a modern diesel on the road. Doesn't make sense for a standard commuter car. If your shop has more work than it can handle you can turn down work. Up to the consumer to make smart educated choices.

I like watching Dave’s but I gotta agree with you here. I own a handful of subies , they are definitely noisey engines. Just like my 12v Cummins. If the noise doesn’t worsen under acceleration I ease my mind on it

I've never even owned a Subaru and I just came across your channel and I am subscribing !. Why, well you struck a chord with me as I have heard a few things floating around on the internet about the shop in question in this video, sometimes questionable work and yes without a doubt some very questionable bills. Oh sure, his videos make him out to be a god ( and yes I gather he is very religious so there is that ... ) but I think the truth is something a little different. Not to say he is stupid ... oh no, more like a sly fox business man who knows how to create some slick advertising and how to bring in the business.

The machining information is 100% spot on, there is only one shop in the USA I would trust to do ANY machine work on a Japanese engine, and their name rhymes with Mazworx.
