Welcome back everyone,
This episode we crack on and get some timber work started on the top side. We cut large amounts of rotten timber from around the windows and large deck sections.

The word your looking for the wood around the boat that you cant replace whilst on thay cradel is called the sponson. (rubbing strake) You might have to steam it before putting it on to get the curve shape. Steaming wood is about 1 inch thickness = 1 hour in the steamer. One other tip when owning a wood boat, make 'Everdure' your friend, its a 2 part mix and sinks into wood killing rot and hardening the wood. It's great stuff.
@HarpersShed
@HarpersShed Жыл бұрын
I will have to look into Everdure, can't say I have heard of it yet. Going to be an interesting process steaming it while floating on the mooring but where there is a will there's a way I guess.

You would be surprised how a tiny water leak up high around deteriorating window sealant and grab rails can travel so far before it gathers and slowly rots out the timber. Also around the base of bow rail fasteners it won’t necessarily rot beside the leak but travel through the grain to a weak area and slowly get worse. I would be scraping out every rail and windows old sealant and re seal with urethane.
@HarpersShed
@HarpersShed Жыл бұрын
It really was surprising just how far it had travelled. Although it wasn't a small hole in the window so the problem was just made worse. In time all the windows will be coming out and getting resealed with new outside trim made also.

Good patch work.I understand time and money constraints, you just got to get it done. Who knows year's from now, maybe a full redesign. When you do the fibreglass , teach us how you did it ,and what product you used. TEACHING your knowledge is a big part of boat utube resto, especially for aussie viewers, and 🍺 of course.

So the next episode shows the glass work however I didn't really do any sort of explanation. I'm happy to do a bit of an explanation when I do the larger section of fibreglass on the top decks though. I don't tend to do too much of the "how too" style content because in truth I'm learning as I go also. Like the old saying goes " Jack of all trades, master of none"

You know I have been watching this series from the beginning.. but looking at the boat today..I can tell you.. you will just sink money into this project. If you took that money that you will need to finish this project and put it towards another used boat.. you would get something that.... yes.. needs work.. but not this much work. But if you just want a project that is going to give you a lot of content for a KZbin channel.. Good on ya.. this is it..

Hi Alex, It's a 50/50 at this point for me mate. On one side I genuinely love the boat but can see the $$$$$$ adding up for the repairs. The other side is the more I can accomplish the more the channel will grow and help to offset the cost. The channel in no way makes enough to self fund the boat but it does help with some of the material costs and mooring/ rego fees. Thanks for the support too mate especially watching from the very beginning I'm sure you have seen the ups and downs of the journey so far. I won't be selling her anytime soon though 🤣

Oh, My Dude, seeing all of that rotten wood is really discouraging, but it is something that you are going to never regret. She'll take good care of you once you get them done and for the other bit, they can wait for a more appropriate time. It was nice to see you get a lot of the structural stuff finished, and having the fantastic weather you've been enjoying while you partially rip your boat apart has been nothing short of a blessing. Hopefully the wood hardener works really well for you, which I'm sure it will, because the one thing Humanity has gotten done really well is chemicals for Glue and resins for hardening. Seriously, if our space age technology was as advanced as our adhesives technology we would already have FTL drives. Your Kiarra is really coming back together and it looks like your works is really coming together Keep your Head up, you may have a lot to go yet, but once your done your boat will be good enough to pass on to your progeny! Cheers Mate!
@HarpersShed

Thank you mate, it's the first time I have used wood hardener and it seems to work very well. Not applicable for every situation but sure does work for the smaller soft non structural sections. The hull is so very, very well made, and the superstructure was clearly not of the same quality. Do you have any history regarding your boat that helps to clarify the apparent disconnect in quality of construction? Those windows where they meet the wood framing are always the weak spots---even when it's not raining---moisture on the panes of glass wicks into the wood structure, and I've yet to find a solution, such as 5200, or boat life, that doesn't fail given how raised cabins constantly move when the boat "works" in seas. As I mentioned in a prior comment, you may wish to cover your windows with isenglass panels with marine canvas borders. We've had success with this approach --- somewhat similar to providing a set of "storm windows" on a house, the weather covers keep much of the destructive moisture away from those vulnerable glass/wood frames. Hope this helps-- respectfully, James
@HarpersShed
@HarpersShed Жыл бұрын
Hi James thanks for your comments, unfortunately I have almost no information and no documentation at all from Kiarras past. I would speculate though that when she last had substantial work done the hull was done by a professional then the owner decided to save some money and do the topside work himself. Do you have an example or website I could look at for the exact details of the storm surrounding you mentioned.
