Not when your kids are playing in a side street! Through roads like those in Islington at 20mph should be 30mph. All A and B roads in built up areas should be 30mph (apart from those roads closed to pedestrian access and dual carriageways etc. that should be higher thus posted so). 20mph is reasonable for all other roads in built up areas eg. access roads, on estates, side streets etc and near schools.

2 years ago, I was driving approaching traffic lights doing 30mph. At the last minute, I saw a camera facing the lights. Immediately, I panicked and thought, "Don't get caught going through an amber/red light." I accelerated through, and the lights stayed green. A few days later I get a summons through the door, speeding. 38 in a 30. I was doing 30mph, the new camera caught me off guard, and in that split second moment. not wanting to go through an amber light, I accelerated. Without the camera, I would have gone through at 30mph.

My Mum's car can't stay in 3rd at 20, my car can't stay in 4th at 20. We have to use lower gears and throw out more pollution. You watch DPD drivers driving insanely to meet ETAs imagine the risk they will take when speed limits are lower. So from a safety and green perspective they make no sense. It's clear it's all about money, they aren't even hiding it anymore.

My old mountain bike hits 40mph downhill cycling home from work. I don't want to be overtaking cars and getting more hate. It's time to fight back, don't let them divide us, we must not comply to this tyranny, but in an intelligent way. United we could bring this government down peacefully. A couple of years ago I was done for 32 in a 30 I had my 28 year old grandson with me when I came around the corner I saw the van with the camera I said to him that’s why you don’t speed because one of those things could be there so no I wasn’t speeding but I got the letter I phoned Cheshire police and was told even though I had a witness I will be found guilty if I go to court and I will be find £1.000 and court costs up to £2.000 plus 6 points ergo I didn’t challenge it

Just turned 72. Eye sight failing. Too many arguments with the wife whilst driving. Two grand a year running, maintaining and cleaning a depreciating hunk of metal. Fined recently for driving 36mph in a 30mph zone. Now £100 poorer plus 3 points. Yes, to be honest, I will join you. Time to sell. The 20mph zones are nothing more than a way to generate income for cash strapped councils.

As a pedestrian I welcome this news. Cars are always jumping lights, speeding, taking wrong turnings etc, if people drove slower then they might pay more attention to what's around them!!

@nothingtoseehere999 the highway code has changed giving pedestrians priority on the road because they are vulnerable as they have no protection. Reducing speed limits in highly built up areas makes sense and is inline with the highway code changes. Additionally a lot of cars are EV and weigh heavily. A pedestrian would have no chance if they're hit by a 1 ton car travelling at 30mph but stand a better chance if the car's speed was lower! I think any reasonable person should put safety first and so 20 mph speed limits is reasonable!

And stop people from running walking only as it could be dangerous might trip in front of a car doing 20 mph....... And get squished....... I am a driver that uses my car everyday, It is about saving lives, get use to it everyone. Pedestrians are proven to have a much higher chance of survival if hit at 20mph with a 2.5% chance of death, compared to 20% when travelling at 30mph. The Lives of our Children and human beings are more important than our cars, 20mph policies are anti-death, not anti-motorist.
