Ok but why would you *not* fish for magikarp whenever you can. Species cause not only benefits the player in a lot of ways, but also adds a level of depth and strategy that isnt just “im going to spam the most common good pokemon”.

That's exactly it, though. In all honesty, it was either a team full of Gyarados or a team full of Wrumples' evolutions, Linoone, and the occasional unique encounter. But yeah, there's no reason not to stock on Gyarados on a run without species clauses.

It's funny tho since having species clause nearly guarantees you to be able to have a Milotic since the other encounters in the route with surf/rod are able to be caught earlier in the game. You still have to go through the trouble, but it's guaranteed. In a non-species clause, it's nigh impossible.

It is really sad. I don't mind new nuzlocke content that's super efficient, but I do feel as if it lost something in that. The best part of nuzlockes for me weren't the challenge, but the emotional aspect. Anyone can number crunch. Anyone. But making a story? Making you really care? That's a whole different skill!

Breeding is something not really done in nuzlockes since a lot of people count the egg as the encounter on the route plus a lot of people don't abuse Breeding to get more stuff kinda removes any challenge

Personally, I view breeding the same way I do grottos/shinies. You can replace the original pokemon with that one if you want, it's basically a reroll on a specific pokemon under particular circumstances. Breeding only really matters for specific egg/other moves though

It's funny to see the opposite reason for why the species clause is implemented in every nuzlocke - most have it to increase team variety, and make runs easier if you get a string of bad luck. Flygon was able to abuse the rule omission to make his run easier almost immediately rather than harder. It's both a testament to how knowledgeable Flygon is at nuzlocking Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and the ability to look at a problem and turn it into a solution. Very cool to watch happen.

Yeah, the Gyarados strat is why I started using species/dupes clause. I did a blind nuzlocke of ORAS when it came out, and when Scylla the Gyarados died, she was replaced by Charybdis the Gyarados, and there was a third in the box whose name I do not recall.

And now we see why Gyarados is one of, if not THE strongest Nuzlocke encounter and why species clause is both good for you (stops you from getting terrible mons over and over) but also keeps you from breaking the game (stops you from getting insane mons like Gyarados repeatedly.) Anyway I will once again and again and again and again and again, recommend a no stab moves / bluntmons run of Black / White. I'll recommend adding an extra rule that you have to fight all optional trainers before each level cap, which is what I did and I think it makes it more interesting and fun.

In earlier generations (1-5) where there is less Pokemon variety and the same Pokemon often show up on every route, I play with a "super harsh" species clause: you can only catch a Pokemon if it's the first route you can possibly get that Pokemon in (well starting when you get Poke balls). So say if you play Platinum and you get a Bidoof on Route 201 where you can also find Starly. Then you see a Starly as your first encounter on route 202. You don't get a catch at all on route 202, in that case. I always combine this with a rule that you can't switch out Pokemon for ones in your box, and when a Pokemon dies you randomize the replacement, and no purposefully failing catches either - so basically you cannot tailor your team to be good and synergistic, you get what you get even if they are all bad Pokemon or all the same type. Originally I just had the second rule but found it would make every run the same (i.e you always get Starly Shinx and Bidoof in Platninum), so adding the super strict dupes clause rule makes it so you both have to work with what you get and your team is passably diverse even if you don't have early game deaths. I wonder if you flygonHG would ever want to do a run like that?
