You feel like a good old fashioned guy back in the day just wanting to talk about games without all the hubbub. And that’s super refreshing nowadays. @@illogikThey're not. But they are the first studio to explicitly state that the cause was the failure of a specific untenable platform requirement to sustain an optional game mode, and then confirmed that they will support that mode as a precondition for release anyway. Remember the reasoning wasn't "we can't get the game to work" or "we can't get multiplayer to work." It was "we can't get this _specific_ couch multiplayer mode to work on _one platform_ and we made a promise to Microsoft that it would." They identified the issue and set the expectation for the solution. Other games like this have not done so and long delays have been followed by barely working launches. This is about as diametrically opposite to what happened with games like Cyberpunk 2077 and No Man's Sky as you could ask for.

As a person who likes unpopular games for nerds. And tiny person crpgs in particular. Something I find really neat about Baldur Gate 3 is how they are drawing a lot from the lore that sets DnD apart from other settings. Mild spoilers about the opening of the game ahead: But the game starts with you being abducted by a multiplanar spaceship lifted directly from their obscure and crazy fantasy sci fi setting Spelljammer. Then said ship is used as a literal and metaphorical vehicle to pick and choose interesting things across all of DnD. Because the ship can travel the planes of existence. Which is another very fleshed out setting that the acclaimed game Planescape Torment is based and got its name from. Among many other things Planescape joins all other existing settings together in a coherent shared universe that I could literally talk about for hours. So now no matter where we end up in the game. Anyone or anything from any setting could've been on that ship and show up in the game. I hope most people will leave this game not feeling it is just a straightforward medieval fantasy setting. Again typical unpopular nerd stuff. But I am excited that trough Baldurs Gate 3 we can enjoy all the things that I love about DnD together.

I did not care for DOS2 and I really liked BG1&2. BG3 is vastly different in terms of pretty much everything in BG1&2, gameplay, tone, writing style, character writing, aesthetics, music, etc. So if you go into BG3, it's better to go into it as a D&D flavored DOS2 than a proper sequel to B1&2, otherwise you might be setting yourself up for dissapointment and thus not give it a fair shake.

Larian's staff has incredible writers, they know what's fun in a video game, and they let you just do whatever and it all works. I never had an issue with "small people," as I grew up with the NES/SNES. Overhead views like Zelda or Final Fantasy, mixed with your side view platforming/adventure games like Metroid or Castlevania, you just had your tiny detailed sprite to control. Then PC games of the time, like Civilization 1 & 2, building up into Starcraft, Age of Empires, Command & Conquer, etc. that was just what you expected to see. It wasn't until the 5th gen where 3rd person 3D games became more common, followed by the 6th gen really refining it into what we see today. I associate that isometric or overhead look with some of the best games I grew up playing, but I get how players today might want something more visually impressive.

I grew up with the primitive ancestors of games like this. There was Adventure on the Atari 2600, in which the player character is a large pixel, the sword is a simple yellow arrow, and the dragons look like ducks. I still love that game and play it to this day. Then, there was the Ultima series. The earlier games have minimal graphics and clunky, tedious combat, but they were the best we had at the time, and I loved them so much that I sector edited the floppies to figure out how they worked and to modify the maps. I guess I'm one of those old crusty old nerds who doesn't need "big people" in games, if only because they were technically impossible back in the day, but I appreciate hearing different perspectives. There are games that I respect but have no personal interest in playing - Elden Ring, for example, because I don't like challenging action combat. Still, I'm happy that a game that wasn't completely broken at launch and wasn't a microtransaction-infested nightmare was so successful. It demonstrates that a well made, self contained game will sell and turn a profit for the company. I tinkered around in Baldur's Gate 3 during early access, but now that it has been properly released, I am getting serious about it. There is a lot of depth and complexity, and not just in the combat. Most fantasy RPGs take themselves very seriously, and on the surface, this one does too, but Larian has always inserted a little humor into the games, going all the way back to Divine Divinity. (I love the scene in the first dungeon where a couple skeletons get into a conversation and have an existential crisis.) I won't spoil anything specific for Baldur's Gate 3, there is an encounter in a building at the edge of the blighted village that really made me laugh. It's nice to have moments like that to break up the general sense of doom and gloom. This game won't be for everyone. Hard core CRPGs require a lot of patience, and it helps to have prior experience with their systems, but Larian has done a good job at streamlining things to make it more accessible than some of the other popular ones. It feels weird to see a game in this genre get so much mainstream attention. I hope the success of games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden Ring filters into the broader industry and teaches certain companies some lessons. While others whine about Diablo 4 and how Activision-Blizzard messed it up (as everyone should have expected), I'll be enjoying Baldur's Gate 3, and there isn't a cash shop or battle pass in sight.

I had never played a CRPG game before, and haven't really cared that much about it, and destiny made me try Divinity Sin2 for 30 minutes, I was rushing dialogs and just wanted to kill people, its just a video game after all, then a Died multiple times, then I played it again and tried to take the game seriously (I never really did this in any video game before, reading dialog? pass), and thus it became one of the most incredible experiences that I had with games in all my life! I'm really exited for BG3.

It’s been my sort of experience as well. I typically play crpgs like an arpg. Min-max my stats and combat skills so I can mow down hordes of enemies. Hold down the ESC key during dialogue and book entries. My character was just an in game avatar of a god of death and destruction. But the writing and events in DOS1&2 was so quirky and relatable to me that I began to play it semi-realistically: Talking to and listening instead of just rushing into combat. Looking for creative solutions to quests. Exploring every corner instead of rushing through quests. It’s much more immersive and fun to me now

I've been enjoying Baldur's Gate 3; it's not without it's flaws (I've found quite a few bugs so far) and there are a few game mechanics I'm not satisfied by. My biggest gripe though is that it lacks a proper photo mode; the game is *very* pretty, but it's really difficult to share that. Also I find the inclusion of romance super weird; it feels forced in way too early, I've known these people for like two days top and they're throwing themselves at my character like Thirsty horndogs. But on the whole I'm having fun with it, I've been playing a goody two-shoes and having fun, and I can see myself replaying as one of my actual D&D characters who was a self-obsessed evil asshat. Also, can't wait to see what Minsc and Boo are up to in the game (Boo is the unusually small giant space hamster you noticed).

As someone who liked rpgs but was always kinda daunted by this style of rpg I can say I’m finding myself so immersed in this game. It genuinely pulls me in whenever I get to sit down and play it. It really feels like I’m playing a DND campaign and am finding so many ways to spend my time in it.

I knew we had similar tastes but your mention of "straightforward medival fantay" as something that's not your thing made me chuckle. I've been known to enjoy fantasy on some occasion, but never as you put it "straightforward", there was always a twist. The "tiny little people" POV hit home on some level as well, although I've been known to enjoy the occasional game with that sort of point of view.

The original BG games, though not made by Larian obviously, also fostered a similar mentality of we want to add fun things that aren't necessarily cost efficient. The culture was a bit different back then and I don't think the profitability analysts had quite the hold over the industry that they do today. I would also reference Planescape Torment or Arcanum of Steamworks Obscura as great examples of this approach to game design. 2 of the biggest and toughest battles in the game were shoved into secret areas 1 of which was basically a long convoluted and obscure side quest and the other was just a totally random room in a building that the game never prompts you to enter under any circumstances. Likewise there were any number of goofy easter eggs spattered around each map in the world. Even though we're now 3 decades since it was originally released I don't want to over spoil with my next example so.... scroll for spoilers Randomly 1 weapon in the game is a completely sentient voice acted character. Now the dialogue for the weapon party member is smaller for sure but not immaterial.

Even better than just being for fun, "it's party time" is a sly reference to the classic "you must gather your party before venturing forth" from BG 1&2. "Gather your party" was their slogan for a long time. But that said, they definitely ARE about fun--the reason this game is so great is because they decided to pay actual tribute to the original series in so many ways, including the inclusion of Minsc and Boo. Petrification happened in the original games, so it's completely believable that a human with a short lifespan could just resume living after being changed back. The trailer may seem bland to some, but that's just to get your imagination going. The game is absolutely popping with flavor.

Great video Mr. Bosman. I love tiny people games ( Path of exile, Pillars of eternity, other games with those initials) but I have a similar thing with turn based games where all the characters line up. I love tactics, where positioning and timing mater, but the classic final fantasy thing where your guys are on one side and all the enemies are on the other and you take turns whacking each other until one of you wins is just... Can't do it.

I don't think it's just the writing but from what I've seen of the gameplay the mocap on the conversations (i.e. gesturing with their hands as they talk) and the excellent voice acting. Like it really looks like you're having a conversation with an actual person. Albeit a person with horns and green skin

@@tiggerdyret It’s definitely more grounded than dos:2. Dos:2 writing was really corny imo. If dos:2 is a 10 in terms of cheesy theatrics, bg3 is probably like a 6. And you can make it lower by killing off certain companions lol. (I insta kill laezel asap)

I cannot recomend enough to get the Talk To Animal ability. Either as a particular Gnome Race, or get it as a spell from Druid or Bard class. Just cast it as soon as you wake up in camp and it'll last you the whole day. The animals are so ridiculous. They give you hints, they have comedic lines, help you in quests...and all the while they have no idea what's actually going on. But there are dozens of them in the game, all voiced, and if you don't get the ability you'd never even hear them.

Yeah I didn't get first person shooter games either. They had "Cheap, shooty shooty boom boom, and battle pass" and everyone always went the "shooty shooty boom boom and cheap" route, but then Call of Duty came out with battle pass and I was all onboard for their success! Like ordering fast food at a five star restaurant! Why have a meticulously crafted gourmet meal when you can have a battle pass with a side of grenades? /s
