Glad to see bass guys trying fly fishing, I'll spin fish for bass every once and a while but having a large mouth or big trout smash a fly is so much exciting. One thing that would have helped in this situation is either a sink tip or full sink running line to get you streamer down and keep it in the strike zone while you strip it back fast.

Nice job. A few tips. - get a stripping basket or may to help with tangles and keep line from hanging up in other gear. - stretch your line to help with the tangles - get a full intermediate or sink tip 3, 5 or 7 line. Try an Rio OBS or SA Sonar or similar. You should be able to shoot 70+ feet of line with minimal false casts (2-3 at most). - try the two handed stripping method if they want it fast common easy technique used often in saltwater (I use it for coho in saltwater all the time). - if they fish are being nippy consider stinger hooks. Stinger clousers are common. Pretty much and streamer can be tied with them. - Try a gurgler or similar pattern for topwater. In that situation, most anything will work (as the hopper did) but a true gurgler or even small popper will give you better action fished moving on top than a hopper will.

This was a great beginners kit for a great price. kzbin.infoUgkxKRURvLsu9Vvyw7gIuvt8FsApoQNCdz-1 Its given us a huge variety to test out and see what works well and what we like to use. Majority of the flies have stayed together well, but some of the rainbow warriors did unravel after catching a few blue gill. All in all, this was a great kit and are so happy with the purchase and value for money.

@@s.pepper1833 Okay okay bubba. Why not publicize how Maine is awesome?! You realize that people from away spend their money to fish/hunt/camp/vacation here, right? Their outside money pays for the baby makers in this state, fishing licenses to stock our waters, and programs for my kids to get into fishing? Rant all you want, but people come here for the outdoors. If they film it and post it, all the better to advertise that Maine's pretty cool. You gettin' butt hurt by too many folks ending up at your fishin' hole? Stuff happens bub. Matter of fact. Find a new KZbin channel about underwater basket weaving if you don't like folks filming their fishing adventures up here.

depends on size of the fish whether you want to fight with a reel or stripping and i defnitely agree i live in montana and the lake fishing is obviously good but nothing like working river or creek hitting all the pockets and theres defnitely no shortage of creeks in Maine they just may be closed during this season

honestly stillwater is a lot more fun most times because the fishing is easier and you catch more fish. Also techniques are more applicable between different bodies of water, so it takes less time to learn to catch fish at each place. Also open water casting is a lot easier than on rivers

I highly recommend the Outbound Short series fly lines from Rio if you are fishing streamers. It takes way fewer false casts to get distance. The one I prefer is called the "hover" line which is an intermediate sink rate but the running line still floats so you can see where the line is and only the front sinks. For a 5wt it would be labeled as WF5F/H/I for example.

@@reelfishermen Not huge on Rio since they switched to the In-Touch core on some of their high end lines, but it's all personnel preference! I've ran through 3 rio lines in a season fishing from my boat where the coating fell off on the head of the line (This was 4 or 5 years ago). Rio replaced all without question and said it could've been a bad batch of the coating material. Regardless, I switched to SA Titan lines for streamer fishing, and SA Amplitude for nymphs and dries. Haven't looked back since!

@@j.brock3 ya I run the “in-touch” black box for all my dry lines. What I do after each season using the lines in salt water, I clean the lines. Two buckets. One with soapy hot water snd the other with hot water. I use a mitt to drag the soapy line through it and out into the bucket of hot water. Keeps the line from rotting away. I’ve had my Rio gold in tough fly lines last me years by doing that method. Try it.

Nice to see some footage with the fly rod. An epic little series would be getting outfitted, then practicing some fly casting (maybe legit lessons) and then going flats fishing for bonefish/permit or tarpon. it would be how someone would practice shooting a bow and arrow prepping for a big hunt. It would be neat to watch the progression from inception to success. Anyway, great video.

Good to see you fly-fishing, John. Some thoughts: 1. Stripping baskets can really help keep your line organized. Check them out. 2. Trout are much more delicate than bass and pan fish. Bass are an ancient species and very hardy, trout are not. When you handle trout you remove part of their protective slime; slime which keeps them healthy. Try a device like a Ketchum Release and you can release the fly and the fish without ever touching it, thereby increasing its likelihood of survival. 3. Wear a hat with a wide brim. It protects your head and ears from errant casts!! 4. If you are missing hook sets, sharpen your hook. Tight lines!!! PS...it is a dry fly....

As someone who goes fly fishing 4 days a week on average, I've gotta say you have really solid mechanics. When the wind is coming at you like that, instead of casting across your chest, just turn your feet 180 degres away from the fish and shoot line on your back cast. This way the fly gets blown away from you, and you can still watch what you're doing by looking over your shoulder without switching hands or catching hooks

You 1 rod and LFG are the only googans who actually fish for more than just bass. Which is why I enjoy your channel's more.

Love this episode! One thing is try to keep your hands wet when you handle any trout. But no worries keep up the good work

Get yourself a bucket or a one of those pop up laundry baskets for the bow so you can strip your line into a “clean” area. It’ll help with line management and tangles

set the hook by bringing the rod tip straight up once the line tenses up after a bite, I used to have the same problem of missing fish or having them come off, this will help

Brookies are my absolute #1 favorite fish to eat, and they're a ton of fun to just catch and release too!

When I fish with streamers and im stripping in. Sometimes instead of the big strips I will do what I call a jig strip. Pull an inch or 2 pause for a split second and strip another inch or 2 and repeat for 6-8 times. Gives that fast erratic movement to get fired up fish to bite

Hey Jon, you should totally come down to South Florida! The Peacock Bass fishing has been absolutely amazing lately and I have a ton of spots I would share the locations with you. Let me know if you are ever in the area, would totally be down to show you a few spots for Butterfly Peacock Bass and a spot to catch 20+ pound freshwater tarpon in a pond!
