This is such excellent advice. I used to feel so intellectually pent up all the time and that feeling manifested in all sorts of ways. Either I felt underappreciated or silenced or like I missed my moment to actually become what I was meant to become. I pitched a million podcast ideas or youtube channels to my friends and I followed through on zero. Strangely, sometimes just pitching the ideas scratched the itch. Having a chat about one of my ideas and exploring all the things it could become was intensely gratifying. Ultimately I just need to get my thoughts out. Jumping into writing was hard at first though, because I was still trying to create something vast and important right from the outset, and that's impossible. It wasn't until I started keeping a mini notepad on my desk that it really started to click. Just having it there to let the pressure out of my skull whenever I needed was so crucial. It wasn't about making something important or even good, it was about letting myself move on to new thoughts and look back on old ones without maxing out my RAM. Gradually I started writing longer things and I developed some vision of what I actually wanted to create, and now I'm working on something that feels vast and important to me and I'm not as concerned about putting it in front of any kind of audience. I was craving recognition, but I wasn't even giving it to myself. Turns out myself was enough.

Sometimes we sweat during a nightmare because I brains lose sense of what's real and what we're just imagining. I think when we focus too much on a goal, we get the same reward as if we had achieved it. Instead we should imagine the journey to the goal. So that's all the research, scripting and marketing that would go into making the podcast.

I have a small instagram account that I only share with my close circle of friends. Every night, when im in bed, and I have a thought racing through my mind, I usually take the time to write out a lengthy instagram post to all my friends who follow that account. The post ranges from describing a weird experience I had at a club, or mourning the death of my cat, to just a regular journaling of how my day went. I think doing this gives me a way to give my close friends a peak into my life without seeming too in their face, or needing of their attention. I also find that it gives me a clear audience that I can shape my wording and structure around. Often times when I finish writing a post I feel pretty refreshed, like I solved a puzzle I have been battling with for a while.

I love this advice and have followed it before hearing it. I've had an amazing time facilitating a writers group that meets online. We've met weekly for an entire year and it all came because i took a class and they had an email list. So, i emailed the class and about 5 people responded. Even though i haven't written anything worth publishing, it has been an amazing creative outlet and great community builder, even if theyre all east coast and im west. Always love hearing internet Shaquilles takes 😊

I've been wanting to create a youtube channel, and this really feels like you get the creative pent up energy that I've been feeling. I keep obsessing about the perfect channel name and content etc etc etc but just starting and making it is a really great idea to see if I'll actually do it or not.
@CommanderWar64

This is a really unique perspective. Though on 1 hand I've heard from creators that their podcasts came about for a few different reasons. Ludwig's The Yard was made so that he could make something to help make his friends rich, others have a podcast so that they can regularly talk to their friends and the financial incentives help encourage them. I think you're right however, regardless of why exactly, that why is fueled by a necessity to do something - anything, that can change up your week by week or day by day life. This kind of itch is something I can relate to, it's definitely some kind of FOMO, but one song that I think speaks to that anxiety is La Dispute's Safer in the Forest/Love Song for Poor Michigan with lyrics like "I need to leave. I can't marry this place /I won't bury the past. I just need a change of scenery."

I think the analogy breaks down a little bit, because you probably would have benefited a lot from just joining the track team. I do agree with your more important point though that writing can really help you explore your thoughts more deeply and the world probably doesn't need yet another podcast of random dudes just spouting nonsense for a while.

As someonne who is creative and tries to style my work in the form of a podcast (more on the audio, less on the visual), you make a really great pointt. Thhe most un I have in he creative process is trying to distill down what could well be a long essay into short 6-10 minute videos. I dont need to ramble on for an hour,, people don't necessarily nneed more of that. One thingn I do find interestinng as a persson w/ low vision is how much more visual a traitionally auditory medium has become. I get why, the added visual element aand clip potential are much greater, but feels kind of redundant?

Shaq, what materials would you recommend to read/watch to improve writing? I'm fully aware that just writing is the best way to learn, it's what I've been doing for my videos as far as the VO goes. But, that is always done after 1st editing draft and it tends to be very traditional (today we're cooking X, start with Y, cut this, add it to that, etc.). I'd like to figure out alternative ways to do it so that's more engaging and, frankly, to stand out from the millions of cooking videos out there.

This is totally right. I actually did the plunge in the past and started a podcast with a close friend that we did 84 episodes of. We started it because what we called our “take tanks” were beyond full. We had so much to say and had to get it out there. After 84 episodes we had shockingly little original to say anymore. Our take tanks were bone dry. The experience definitely was a useful and provided life lessons. But even the most opinionated insightful people run out of stuff to say

i don't really get this video, because why shouldn't you have joined track as a 12 year old? You regularly had the impulse to do it, so you regularly had the excess energy. You don't have to think you'll be the best in your field to enjoy doing something. Even a chubby 12 year old could get something out of it, and get over being humbled by being the least-skilled one there which is an important life skill (unless your track team was too competitive and you wouldn't be able to join/train with the team).
