I think what I like best about this series immediately is that you were put on the back foot with this island despite starting so optimistic. Its really fun watching someone play back from a horrible swing like that.
@Br3ttM11 ай бұрын
If I was playing that map I would have started a new game as soon as I saw how close all the city states were. Of course, I'm a Civ 5 player, so I don't crowd my cities together, and I don't believe in conquering city states, just possibly stealing workers off them and farming XP.

This episode highlights the absolute bananas strength of Babylon, and specifically how *fantastic* Babylon becomes in Tech/Civic Shuffle. Getting the entire tech instead of 40% for achieving a tech boost is *insane*. The episode starting with Babylon attacking with Warrior, Spear, and Archer, being technologically equal to Potato. Half way through the episode, Babylon has Men-at-Arms, Knights, Coursers, and Crossbows. But the thing to remember is that, despite Babylon's crazy ability to blast through the tech tree, they are ABSOLUTELY NOT a Science Victory civ. The -50% to normal Science output combined with the last couple of Eras on the Tech Tree only getting boosted by Spy actions (meaning someone has to be ahead of you technologically) pretty much make Science a non-viable option for Victory. Possible, sure. Probably, not even close.
@redpiller11 ай бұрын
Pretty sure the earliest science victories anyone has ever done was with Babylon. Some people were getting sub-100 science victories. There are strategies that overcome their -50% SPT
@troyzeisler523011 ай бұрын
Boesthius did a 150 turn deity Babylon science victory last week.
@Deathborn66811 ай бұрын
Science victories are easy with Babylon. Yes, you have a 50% science penalty and that technically hurts for the Future Era techs. However that can be circumvented with the Great Library (giving free boost whenever someone else gets a scientist, so it'd have to grab a freebie Future tech), as well as the fact that rushing as many eurekas as possible means you'll approach the Future era techs 100+ turns sooner than any other civ, so any slowdown is only a mild annoyance because you've bought yourself a lot of time.
@redpiller11 ай бұрын
@@Deathborn668 Plus you can pillage science in the late game. Build cavalry, get the depredation promotion and you can pillage through the techs that can't be boosted.

I'm not usually a fan of shuffle games, but this has been a fun one. That choke point between Potato and Zanzibar was a blessing, getting to focus fire everything Babylon sent through it was probably what saved the empire. I do wonder if getting suzerainty over Zanzibar rather than Fez might have been the play though. Could have then sent Z a trade route and walked straight through to Babylon for a much earlier Domrey attack.

A quick heads up for war optimization: Warriors are the only unit that do not benefit from Flanking and Support bonuses. I believe they can provide it for other units, but they cannot make use of it themselves. This is likely due to the fact that they have 0 gold upkeep cost. Also, if you notice the AI embarking troops to invade you, *BUILD A GALLEY* You won't have to do that unit positioning dance if you control the seas.
