I have a Metabo HC260C combined jointer-planer. It's nothing wrong to go down around 2 mm. Officially in thickness planing mode it can't go below 5 mm. To solve this problem (and protect the machine) I screwed a small piece of wood to an 10mm MDF to work as an anchor and put it into the machine. It works fine. Obviously you have to double check the grain directions and you only want to use wood with nice, straight grains, but it works fine. For other situations just use a thickness-sander.

Sanding is the love and respect that you put into your project. Do not look at sanding as a laborious activity that you hate! It is all about perspective. When you take the time to sand a project you are putting your sole and inspiration into the project. Those that do not spend the time finessing the contour are missing out on the true art of perfecting their talents. Where did I put that 36 grit flap disk For my grinder? I am fished sanding that refinish job on the grand piano, it is done! 🤣🛫

When I saw your opening photo I immediately thought of sharpening a chisel or plane blade, but instead of a plastic or wood base I thought what if the round was made of a corian scrap. You want in on a secret source of free solid heavy flat lapping surfaces? Visit your local countertop stone cutters and ask if you can take a "sample" from their dumpster. When the wife and I were looking for countertops for our kitchen remodel we debated the colors and how they might look in our kitchen. They pointed to their dumpster and said take as much as you like. I grabbed a few different pieces a couple about 10" wide and 40" long. I now have Carrera quartzite inch and half thick window sills that cost me 15 minutes in a dumpster full of granite and quartzite. I also snagged a nice roughly 10x15" piece of dead flat quartzite as my lapping surface. I hadn't thought about it before; but, small "unsellable" remnants have to be disposed of somehow. So, they just throw them in a dumpster.

I purchased a used one as the piece is a bit pricey, but the machine kzbin.infoUgkxG6fbm3cHBd7CNTjk5D-dwYe9c9tCB9ZN has surpassed my expectations. We sand small parts by hand often, sized around 1"x1/2," and specifically look for a piece that's designed to be vertical. The motor has plenty of torque and great speed settings. The only inconvenience I had is that the disk measures 5" where we trim 6" stick-and-sand disks down easily by mounting it then cutting with a box cutter.
@TheSMEAC
@TheSMEAC Жыл бұрын
My only thought aside from “get creative with sticky back sanding disks” is that any person who can buy/feed a drill press can invest the 15$ in a cheap eclipse knock off jig to grind new primaries on their chisels sticking that sandpaper to a piece of glass and you’re in there like swimwear. I’m just saying that suggesting that someone use a mandrelled disk with cubitron sanding disks to maintain chisels on their drill press is serious reaching brother and sadly the ones who’ll take you up on the idea are the guys who’d benefit far better from a 5 minute video on how to clean up the casting on a pot metal eclipse jig so it will secure a chisel. I hate to be a hater on this one brother, but I feel like that one was a swing and miss. I normally find your content entertaining and I subscribe just for that reason (I’m a maker too and you make content in the maker space that may not always benefit me, but I’m always entertained 👍) I did really appreciate the idea recently to use more permanent double side tape like the fast cap and others where I might otherwise have used the super 77 or loctite spray. There are still places where the spray adhesive is the way to go, but I’ve already used your idea in a few jigs/etc and appreciate the time saving/mess & fume reduction. Just my 2¢
